Hi John, As a youngster, I learnt the traditional 3 finger style Open A chord, but now in my 60's, I've worked out that its a lot simpler to just use one finger across those 3 strings. What I can't work out is, playing the Root note on an A shaped Barre chord. It does my head in. I just play that one finger A chord, without the proper "low" Root note. (Effectively I'm just playing an inverted triad).

Try using your 3rd & 4th fingers to form the A shape (3rd gets D & G strings/ 4th gets B string) while your 1st finger does the barre 👍

I’m trying to learn an intro that has no other instruments. It goes from single notes to a jazz style chord. Alternate versions are not practical because the following chords ( played quickly) are almost a chromatic run up (slight variations). I modified the single notes to play them easier. In this case, its just practice practice practice.
