Some Unmeasurable Costs of Scams

Thank you for being here. In this video I share some ideas I have about unmeasurable costs of scams that are a result of victim-blaming and stigma. I hope it is helpful to you and I would love to hear your thoughts about it!

I like your comment that “sometimes people cannot detect that they are being lied to.” Whatever happened to my brain when I believed the scammers happened to my husband as well…even though we both had moments of grave suspicion. However, the terror and panic we experienced overrode our logical minds. I find this fascinating if horrifying. My doctor (gynecologist) said something compassionate and perceptive: he wondered when he would fall prey to something similar. We all have moments of weakness.

It's been 34 years since I was scammed. My life today is a mess. Tracing back to the event that sent my adult life down a path to nowhere and it was the scam that happened years ago. My family lost all respect for me and they never forgave me. It left a stain on my existence that ruined my entire future. Maybe now is the time to go back to that event and try to deal with it. This video series is great, too bad I do not live in Colorado. I could have sure used your counseling.

I am sad to hear that a scam has had so much of a terrible impact on you. I hope you were able to watch more of the videos here on my channel and that they were helpful. It sounds like you have recently realized how deep that impact has been for you. One of my other videos is about searching for a counselor for yourself and along with that, I would recommend this: After screening for someone who is in your state (or near you) and takes your insurance, check their profile or website to see if they work with trauma. This is the most important mental health issue so it’s a “must have.” If you find someone who also works with betrayal, or grief, or both, those are the next most important. Then if possible interview at least three professionals to see if they seems like a good fit for you and that they seem to understand what you are going for. If you get any sense of judgement, that’s a deal breaker. If the person expresses that they aren’t sure they have the knowledge to be helpful this is a great sign actually. If it feels appropriate you can let them know that I consult with colleagues on this and have an online training that gives my colleagues the confidence to work with a person who was scammed.
