He sounds probably the best a non-straight ahead player can sound playing straight ahead (and probably better than many dedicated straight ahead players do). I think he still sounds like a fusion player but i have no doubt if he dedicated himself to straight ahead he would be very very scary.

I agree. You can hear that his tone, vocabulary and time feel are not influenced by any Jazz guitarist, but his technique and harmonic awareness keeps him in the game. If he studied the history (classic recordings), listened to players with good time feel, and changed his tone to a clean, none overdriven tone, I think we'd all be done for :D A great guitarist indeed!

Govan playing somewhat in country swing mode Michael Batio has an old acoustic clip on youtube from called 1998 "jazz ballad". It's beautifully played . I would call it Spanish influenced smooth jazz. He also has another one has casually noodling called "Michael Angelo Batio demonstrates some jazz skills" where he plays more traditional jazz. He knows his jazz chords, has anther one, an instructional one called "Michael Angelo Batio's Jazz Progressions. " These are real jazz progressions. It's pretty good. You can see he plays some in a convincing jazz swing.

@@LeviClay in this video: Jazz Guitar Lesson - 24 Jazz Progressions (Progressions 1-4) at time 3:04 he plays some chords in old school (Pre bop) swing. I think it was pretty well executed. The test for me would be if he played a single line solo over swing drums and had convincingly supra peek-a-boo swing. Alex Skolnik definitely can, also Alex Hutchings. Govan also. Extra points if they have some Be Bop riffs at supra peek-a-boo level. Check out Steven Segal playing Donna Lee on a D'Angelico, nailed it

Of all the A List Guitar God's so to speak, Guthrie Govan has one of the Broadist Frames of Reference of Different Genres and Language. Its one of the things that makes him so amazing. This Jazz Language is very Western Swing. Although in my humble opinion, the most impressive Rock/Metal Guitarist with Jazz Chops is Alex Skolnick. He attended the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City graduating with a Degree In Jazz Performance. His band The Alex Skolnick Trio specializes in Bebop arrangements of Rock and Metal songs. On Alex's KZbin Channel, His playalong of George Benson's The Cooker is very good. Thanks.
