This would be a case for the game warden. They destroyed property and essentially stole money. You can't say they didn’t know better aince the trap was holding the pigs and it wasn't their trap. I'm sure a judge would enjoy hearing how they didn’t know any better and hownit was an honest mistake.

I’m the same way about my trap man!! I have the same panel trap and I’m the only one that messes with it. Costs too much to take a chance!! I hate that for you. Hope it doesn’t happen again.
