One of my earliest memories of Doctor Who was the introduction of the New Dalek Paradigm. Today we’ll be taking a look at the legacy of these Daleks 13 years on, and why they were ultimately sacked off from the programme…

This video had actually made me come to reassess and re-appreciate the Dalek Paradigm. I do wish Moffat had stuck to his guns and kept them for Smith's run and even Capaldi. The Time War Daleks get so boring after a while.

I met Nick Briggs in 2015 at a convention in Texas, and I asked him about the purpose of the Eternal Dalek in a Q&A and he gave a joke answer about it taking an eternity to get on a flight. Later he found me in the gift shop and just walked with me for a minute, and said he wanted to make sure I didn't think he blew me off. He said he wished they had been done slightly differently and given a chance, but it wasn't to be. Love the Paradigm, and I'm glad to find someone who does too.

This is gonna be a little strange, but given your hankering for the Paradigm, maybe it'll be entertaining idk. Years ago, I had a nightmare - used to them, get them every other day - but this one was uniquely terrifying. I was in a large house I didn't recognize somewhere in the countryside, and I was being pursued by a Time Lord - wasn't the Doctor, that's for sure. The problem was, she was a psychopath. She was more terrifying to me than almost any other thing that pursued me in bad dreams. She wanted to catch me and turn me into someone else, erasing who I was in the process. I ran and hid, room after room, and every time she found me. At one point I got out of the house and stumbled into the backyard, which had a shed of some kind, and in front of that shed was a device that I touched which caused a squad of Daleks to appear and wake up. Apparently, they had dematerialized and were waiting for someone to rematerialize them. I didn't get a bad feeling from them, even though I knew what they were. They were the bronze variety, and among them was a Paradigm - red, I believe. They didn't say anything, and immediately set to work opening the device that had rematerialized them. There was a power cable that the red Paradigm opened its rear compartment for another drone to retrieve, and a weapon emitter - same type used by the Special Weapons type - and they assisted each other assembling it. They knew I was there, but weren't saying a word or killing me because they knew they had to be silent since the Time Lord was nearby, but I could hear their casings whirring, looking back at each other's work. When the weapon was ready, the girl came out of the house just as they fired it, and the whole house went up, just a plume of plasma. The bronze holding the weapon turned to me and said "YOU ARE THE WIT-NESS OF THE DA-LEKS." The red Paradigm scanned the yard and started moving toward the destroyed house. Witness? And how was I not dead already? What had even happened? By now I woke up. Now, I'm not a Whovian, but over the years I had seen quite a bit of it, and at that point I hadn't thought about it in a while. Was a weird and yes, terrifying dream, but it stuck with me, and there was the Paradigm overseeing the weapon's operation and opening its compartment to provide the adapter. My weird dreams aside, it really is a shame that they shafted the Paradigm like this. The Eternal was always my favorite. Let's hope Big Finish gives them more parts. There are a couple stories where they're central.
@SomeBoiOnline
@SomeBoiOnline 3 ай бұрын
Wow, that's pretty impressive considering you hadn't seen the show in a while. There's something about the daleks remaining silent that's really creepy, what a great description!
@vankristlabs
@vankristlabs 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, they woke up right away - not sure how long they'd been waiting in "desync" - and seemed to instantly know everything that needed to be done without verbal instruction, like they'd been planning it. I don't know if they had been after the Time Lord girl, or she'd been the one to dematerialize them - maybe that was her TARDIS? - but either way, they worked with pure purpose, their radiation valves stayed dark, and I watched the operator of the weapon swivel its dome around and drop its eyestalk to check that the weapon was in position for the adapter to be plugged in. I had no idea who these Daleks were, or that I was their "Witness," but I instinctively didn't fear them (even though in real life, if I saw them, I absolutely WOULD be beside myself with terror). I remember feeling bad for the Time Lord - even though she was nuts, and I didn't *see* her die, some part of even my dreaming self was thinking that she had to be one of the last to exist outside of Gallifrey Falls No More, and I basically just ran into the arms of the Daleks and effectively let them murder her. I remember thinking The Doctor (it was during Capaldi's run at the time) would be very disappointed in my cowardly path of trading one maniac for arguably worse ones. I would have preferred merely escaping, because her goal was tragic - she wanted to capture me, and replace my "quantum profile" with that of her deceased crush, effectively overwriting my existence. And normally, I would let this happen - what have I done for the world? Surely a Time Lord would be a better addition to the world than me. But my dreaming self was all instinct. The whole thing was surreal and affected me more than the retelling can account. But I'll never forget the Paradigm back there, sliding its rear casing open. At the time, I had never seen the concept art of how that was supposed to look, I had only heard of the idea, and later when I saw the art, it looked the same as in the dream. Either way, your excellent video made me remember all that, and your work and story about how you first saw the Paradigm when you were 9 stuck with me. I was 19 at the time when I saw Victory, and I felt the same way as you, expecting them to be actually consequential - and the score that played when they emerged is one of my personal top five most memorable pieces of media.

I sincerely hope the new paradigm storyline gets picked up in the actual show again at some point. It's a show about time travel, so a yet-to-be Doctor could easily encounter them years from now, and the show has picked up old storylines that had seemingly been abandoned decades prior before. There's a lot of great and unique story possibilities that I'd love to see, and that eternal Dalek is practically screaming to be used for something spectacular.

I definitely get why people thought the newer daleks were worse since they were bigger and more odd. I think the Asylum of the Daleks was good because it was showing the psychology of Daleks and had various different types of Dalek. The episode was not meant to be about THE Daleks, but a standout ship separate from that. I think if we look at the Stolen Earth story, the truth is shown - the Paradigm Daleks are the SUPERIOR Daleks that are worshipped in Dalek lore, like the Supreme Dalek, who is definitely a drone.

Really enjoyed the nostalgic revisit to 2010s Who. Similarly I grew up during the 10th & 11th Doctor’s era & loved the paradigm Daleks as a kid. I was let down by how after series 5 the Daleks were underused & was kinda shocked to hear that the redesign received backlash. It’s a shame that they caved into the negative reception as it ultimately hurt the Daleks more. Sure Asylum of the Daleks breaks tons of continuity, the Daleks aren’t scary & the story is terrible but hey at least the Paradigm are in it less… And even though I like into the Dalek as an episode, it’s similarities to Dalek in series 1 & not developing Rusty’s story arc past the episode only highlights how directionless they became.

This, this is exactly why I champion Chibnal not letting fans dictate what happens in his era, he made controversial choices and ran with them instead of bowing down to the fans, and Moffat mishandling them so fucking hard is why the Daleks stories from 2012 onwards suffered, Moffat didn't have much of a plan following Victory and clearly didn't have a plan to deal with the retirement era of the Paradigms, so the stories felt disconnected and like they were being pulled from his arse

As someone who grew up in the early 2000s and 2010s, I watched the RTD stories when they aired but was only truly able to understand what was going on by the time the Paradigm was introduced in _Victory of the Daleks_ and as such I came to appreciate the Paradigm quite quickly. Though I at first disliked how the bronze Daleks were treated until I considred things from the Paradigm's point of view in universe. As such, and as I'm someone who loves narrative consitency and lore, I was pretty disappointed in how the Paradigm's story (in fact, that of the Daleks as a whole) was so atrociously mishandled. There was no explanation for how or why there was a Parliament and Prime Minister or even why the bronze Daleks were back until a sourcebook released in 2017 retrocatively filled in the huge gaps. Even the Supreme being the Dalek that taunts the Doctor in _the Time of the Doctor_ would've been wonderful to SEE instead of everyone just scratching their heads over who it could be until that sourcebook. And when Dalek stories became so inconsistent and with no narrative from the Capaldi era onwards, I was pretty displeased. So yeah, I actally wish the Paradigm were given a proper onscreen chance to prove themselves instead of being treated like this; I think that if the metalic paintjob was coupled with a story like _Dalek_ with which they could prove themselves they would've been MUCH better received. Thank you so much for this comprehensive history and for showing me how tragically these new Daleks were treated!

I definitely agree that the Paradigm had a bit of a poor run in the main show. I think it's unlikely that RTD or any future show runner would bring them back in any meaningful capacity. I do hope that they learn from the mistakes made by the Paradigm if/when they come to introducing a new era of dalek designs. And it's interesting you bringing up Doctor Who Live. (comics. toys. and otherwise. aswell as movies) imagine if terry nation gave BBC and steven moffat the rights. we would have fleshed out movie and comic inspired daleks with a few paradigm elements. perhaps in a future episode. they could be the new daleks that the 15th doctor (ncuti gatwa) would meet. i love the paradigm and i wish there would be an alternate universe where they were comic/movie inspired

Moffat is infamously bad at writing Dalek stories, so it makes sense that his Dalek design would be underused.

I'm sorry you had your fun ruined a bit as a kid, due to the internet. Since I grew up in the very early days of the internet, that wasn't really much of an issue. But as it stands now, my brother and I fully agree on very much controlling what the kids are allowed to see and access. It's all quite limited and controlled. Because there's so much out there that really isn't even remotely suitable or healthy.

I've listened to all but the final episode, pretty phenomenal so far. The voices are amazing and the Daleks have never been more of a threat.

@@SomeBoiOnline 100%. The ending of “Daleks Victorious” was insane. Definitely the most chilling that the Daleks have been for me in a long time. Glad we’ve explored the area after Asylum too as the whole “erased memory” idea was so wasted. Need something more between Victory and Asylum now though!

Totally agree, I'd love to follow the original Paradigm straight after the events of Victory, i.e. the Dalek That Time Forgot!

@@SomeBoiOnline 100%. Adore the Dalek That Time Forgot! Hate to plug my own stuff, but as a Paradigm lover.. I’m making a Dr Who audio series and very much plan to explore the Paradigm between Victory and Asylum. So if you’d fancy checking that out (whenever it releases) then maybe it scratches your itch! If not, don’t worry 😂

If they hadn't coloured them like Skittles then they definitely would have been at least a little bit better received. If they were to bring them back, I think they should get shrunk down a little to be more similar in size to the normal design, reduce the shoulder and hunchback size and give them more restrained colour schemes. Then they could be more sleek and new whilst not being as clunky or resemblant of Tic Tacs. But if you did that, then what you'd have would just be the Imperial Daleks from Remembrance of the Daleks. Maybe we should just bring back those.

I hated these daleks as a kid, doctor who at this time to me started to go downhill, i was younger, but i didn't like the Matt Smith era, and and every time i try to get back into the show, i always just dont get along with the newer episodes. That being said, i am nostalgic for them now, i remember i got the blue dalek bath toy thing that had shampoo in it. They aren't as bad as i remember, but i still don't like that era of doctor who

I don't mourn their potential. They should pull a George Lucas and edit the digital releases to have the deeper metallic colours from the beginning.

Side profile looked like a Victorian woman complete with bustle. Horrible design, purely designed for merch. That's not hate, or negativity, just an observation. The massive promotion on TV shows and in public spaces shows the desperation to shift merchandise. The reception at the Proms simply reflects the love for all Daleks, even the least liked. The essential factor of the Daleks is that they are highly mobile fighting machines. Size doesn't matter 😊. The New Paradigm looked less agile, more clunky.

@@SomeBoiOnline Much improved, with a slight reduction in size, I would be fine with the rest, don't like the eye, but that's quibbling, in fact the additional weapons make sense, more so than the Resolution version, with globes hiding extra weapons. The globes were sensors, I read in the Terry Nation books of the 60's. Though in 'Dalek' they were self destruct devices. The public didn't like the Paradigm Daleks, so the BBC quietly retired them. Back then the BBC listened to the viewers. Pity they don't listen to other gripes, like the Davros Affair, and reverse the ratings fall.

Interesting, perhaps if they'd been introduced like this in the first place, the backlash wouldn't have been as severe. The Davros stuff does make the Paradigm controversy feel pretty tame by comparison.
