1) He was five. 2) Yes, I knew autism. I worked in child care so I had one non-verbal and one aspy. I only briefly interacted with them. HB doesn’t fit neatly into a stereotypical spectrum. He literally missed one milestone that anyone noticed. I believed for a long time that he was ADHD since it’s similar. 3) Balancing the kid thing is actually easy. My other child has an LD so depending on what’s happening each child has their needs met in different ways. HB is fairly independent and my goal when he turns 9 is to allow him to be able to stay at home by himself for short periods of time. 4) no diets and no plans either

5) He goes to a normal school. He’s in a regular classroom 80% of the time. 6) My biggest issue with him is his Behavioral issues that effect his ability to stay in his classroom and in karate. 7) He’ll succeed at whatever he wants to. 8) Advice: Don’t be fooled by the stereotypes. Autistics are smart. They have normal iqs for the most part. It’s a developmental disorder so you’re going to discover that they learn things at a slower pace. Or in my kid’s case he catches up lightening fast but had/has blips along the way. 🤷‍♀️

Thank you so much for sharing your answers Delta Flute! I loved reading them! Especially your advice because I 100% agree! And with #2, I've been amazed at how similar so many of the behaviors of ADHD and autism are. Sadie has more stims than either of the other girls do, and her stims are more stereotypically seen as ASD stims. There's so much overlap that I had no idea about before I had these kids!

LOVED it!!!!!!! I know girl I think about the future and it scares me. James has adhd on top of his Autism which I think is more of a issue for him that his Autism and I get scared we wont be able to get it under control with medication. Don’t get me wrong we have gone as long as we can w/o medication but its really affecting school and nothing else works, all this said I don’t know the future but I do know that he is smart and that he will one day be independent......well at least I HOPE so. GAH Girl I have a tough time w that one!!!!!

I totally understand on that one and it totally sounds like you're doing the right thing I think meds are such an important tool in helping kids and adults with ADHD manage their symptoms. And I have just asked for a psych consult for Maggie because like you I feel like we've gone as far as we can without meds and we need that extra help (although not necessarily for ADHD in her case... I think more OCD). It's so hard. I'm just hoping the referral comes through ASAP!

Thank you! I was so surprised when she did! And even more surprised when she accepted it when I said we didn't have time for the snack because the bus was almost after she had tricked me. I was so afraid we were 10 seconds from a meltdown and she handled it so smoothly! ❤️
