@@aleksherstyuk8319 I agree, and I don't really watch Northernlion to learn from his games. With "Your chess content is the one I watch the most" I meant that I mainly watch the chess videos on his channel as opposed to the other ones he makes, not that I mainly watch his chess videos over all other chess videos, though I do see now, how the wording there was really very confusing. As to other chess creators, I do watch Gotham as well as the other popular youtube chess people, like Naroditsky and Hikaru, so I think I'm in pretty good hands. It's just nice to come back from wonderful and complex tactics seen in seconds and 20 moves of critical bleeding edge theory being played, to less complicated plans, and games you can keep up with without someone narrating over it.

At 7:12, I think you could have taken the dark-square bishop with your rook. This would defuse the tactic where their bishop was laser-beaming through your e-pawn, and would end up just being a trade of a bishop and rook from each of you.
@aleksherstyuk83192 жыл бұрын
That still loses a piece though, since white rook takes black bishop with tempo on the queen, and then after the recapture queen takes rook, the pawn just takes the rook on c3. He had a way out completely (where he's only down one pawn) by actually taking the rook with the queen (which he thought loses), and when bishop takes, queen f8. Best white can do is a forced queen trade and winning back the exchange, only being up a pawn with both players having a rook and a bishop left. So if white doesn't know endgames well, that might as well be a toss up
@Moley1Moleo2 жыл бұрын
@@aleksherstyuk8319 - Good points; I definitely miscalculated here. My move is a bit better than resigning, but you definitely saw a much better alternative.
@aleksherstyuk83192 жыл бұрын
@@Moley1Moleo no your move is definitely a lot better than resigning! It really requires a "counter-tactic" to beat. Idk whether to call it a desparado, a tempo gaining move, danger levels, or whatever, but he has to see rook takes bishop. So if white recaptures your rook with the pawn (after all, he's getting a rook for a bishop right??) thinking he just went up a further exchange, then hey, what you said works! Below a certain rating, a big issue is people forgetting what's been hanging or not hanging in a long sequence of tactical moves, so realistically, theres a big chance he forgets your queen can take the rook, and then the idea works great! What's your rating? (I'm around 1700-1800). The fact that you saw the idea behind rook takes bishop, but missed certain concrete calculations, makes me think it's around NL's, but you'd benefit from doing a shear large number of short little tactics (like chesstempo or something), focusing on speed and accuracy, cause that's how I actually built my automatic scanning mechanisms for moves like these. Honestly, that and a few good openings are all you need to beat almost everyone below like, 1300 or something

30:25 i feel like the guy's bishop d6 would do some nice pressure on NL's rook, to where he would have to move it back as any other position would risk a loss. the guy then could've guarded his bishop with the rook on h6. or even maybe move the rook to h1 for knight pressure. i suck at chess, but these seem like better move for a set up than that pawn move.

6:55 in the first game NL can just take the rook, and defend with Qf8. Idk why he didnt see it, he sort of took his time on that move. And he didnt even bother reviewing the game up to that point! He would have seen a sweet forced maneuver that overall, only leaves him down a SINGLE pawn in an endgame (...Qxd6. Bxe5 Qf8, Qxf8 Kxf8, Bxc7 Rxc7). Who knows, if NL is better at endgames, that could even be a win
@aleksherstyuk83192 жыл бұрын
The only problem is after Bxf7 Kxf7, then it's possible that Qxh7 ideas win for white. But white would have to make that weird extra Bxf7 sacrifice once the queen is deflected, and if he was tunneled on Bxe5, then white throws almost all of his advantage away. So still, taking the rook gives the best chances
@NearoC2 жыл бұрын
It's honestly not very common, but it's sick seeing the end of game be like "you could've done [move I personally saw but NL didn't]" Anyways, the other 95% of plays are things I'd have not seen but enjoy NL doing, nice to have chess.

That's a great point about the puzzles. You know for a lot of them there's some gambit or gimmick you have to find but you normally wouldn't play like that, at least at the lower levels.
@NihongoWakannai2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, just knowing that there is something to look for is a big advantage. You cant afford to spend a minute looking for a gimmick on every move when you only have 10 minutes on the clock.
@hamsterfromabove89052 жыл бұрын
The point of puzzles is to practice pattern recognition. Its to recognize the themes of puzzles. To notice similar concepts in your real games. Its true that noticing a single gimmick in a puzzle wont' matter you a better player. But on the other hand not training your tactics is going to make you a weaker player than you'd otherwise be.
@timchronis15842 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah for sure, I didn't mean to discredit them entirely. Learning to look out for patterns like forks, pins and the like is great for your arsenal. I just think it would be good to have puzzles in more "normal" positions, to help you learn how to make the most of common situations. E.g spotting and setting up for attacks, protecting vulnerable pieces, that sort of stuff.

Still down a piece. He probably should have taken the rook, and when bishop takes pawn, THEN Qf8! Which liquidates into a bishop and rook endgame, only down a pawn. Problem is after Queen takes rook, best is probably the in-between moves Bxf7, Kxf7, and Qxh7 (or Bxe5 before Qxh7), but white is down quite a bit of material and has to find a mate with his 3 remaining pieces
