Liz Fraser recorded this song a few days after her friend Jeff Buckley died. She wrote the lyrics as a stream of consciousness to express the loss she felt.

@@umdesch4 Eh, lots of the time it is actually english, it is just how she pronounces it, where she puts the emphasis, etc. If you listen to Frosty The Snowman and Winter Wonderland, or practically any song where you know the lyrics, you can see how she changes the emphasis and the pronunciation to make normal English words sound different. She doesn't make it up entirely like Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance... Even some things that sound made up, are later found to be interesting things, like reading a list of butterfly species in Latin, as lyrics, lol. At least for this one, there are discernable lyrics. But for a song like Bluebeard, the lyrics are obvious and out there, and yet when she sang it live, she was all over the place.

Jeff Buckley and his father Tim Buckley were both phenomenal music artists who died young. Cocteau Twins covered Tim Buckley's etherial "Song to the Siren". Tim had a remarkable change in style in his career from aetherial folk to dirty funk.

This is one of my favorite songs (I have many). Massive Attack went through a few stages in the process of this song. At one point, they considered Madonna for the vocals on this but they ended up choosing Elizabeth Frazer, who felt a more personal connection to the lyrics as she recently lost Jeff Buckley, who was her former partner and still extremely close to. She felt to lyrics spoke very well about his passing and dedicated the song to him. Massive Attack would later work with Madonna on another track, a cover of a Marvin Gaye song, “I Want You”. Definitely check it out. It’s one of their best, both Massive Attack and Madonna

Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins is the singer. If you want to get blown away listen to any of the songs. Early Twins and especially from Heaven Or Las Vegas. Her vocals are ephemeral. She wrote the lyrics and was famous for not being able to understand her singing. Her bandmates would be asked if they knew what she was singing and they would shrug their shoulders and just say she was the lyricist.

The singer is Liz Fraser from Scottish band The Cocteau Twins. They were at the forefront of an art/indie period of music but have, as a relevant music, lasted to this day. She wrote this, being inspired by a french philosopher's work, his Name was Gaston Bachelard. As she recorded the Song in the studio, she found out that her ex boyfriend, singer Jeff Buckley (you probably remember him singing "hallelujah") died. She said, she had thought of him even before, read old letters from him and was thinking about him, writing and singing the lyrics and that it's really about him. I saw Massive Attack live in 2018 and Elizabeth Fraser singing this live and it was the only concert I ever cried at, that's how beautifully she sang. I recommend, you check out the Song "Song to the siren" by This Mortal Coil, which is also sung by her. This is probably her most well-known Song after Teardrop, but any cocteau twins you'll react to, i'll be happy about too:)

One thing about this music is that it is good background or just chillin quietly, music, because for me most of the time music is hard and faced paced which is what I love. Hi Jay 😁 The band's 3rd album went beyond trip hop to become a creative reference everywhere in April 1998 - Mezzanine is Massive Attack's greatest work, but it can't be considered a trip hop album - even when it comes to the group who created the trip hop. Robert 3D Del Naja even discussed with Andrew “Mushroom” Vowles during the design of the disc. 3D advocated a more grooved approach, looking for a kind of intensity that escaped the structure of a genre that was starting to get addicted. Therefore, there is a more elaborate work of mixing, vocal extensions and even long pauses, so that the drama was as organic as possible and the influences more comprehensive. It's trip hop because it has the Massive Attack signature. But it's also hip hop, jazz, reggae, post-punk, progressive… A major spat arose just as the band was about to decide what to do with "Teardrop." 3D, G and Davidge were delighted when Liz Fraser, lead singer of the Cocteau Twins, sent in her demo of the song - the result became the classic version we know today, with Liz operating like the emotional hand of an enigmatic clock, aiding Massive Attack to take her first song to the UK Top 10. Portishead is definitely the other big name in trip-hop that you have to check out. There's also Sneaker Pimps, though only their first album with Kelli Ali on vocals is worth listening to, though Ali's solo albums are great. In a more modern vein, there's London Grammar, The Still Corners and The Paper Kites, all of wihch operate in a similar chill/trip-hop/dream pop space.

I was a big trance and cheesy techno fan in the 90s and only got in to Trip Hop later. Love Massive Attack's Angel. In the same vein from the 90s you also have Portishead. Glory Box is the chefs kiss. I love DJ Shadow and funny enough even though I did know it was classed as Trip Hop at the time, one of two of what I would class as the best albums of the 90s is 9 Deadly Venoms by Depth Charge. The other album is Decksanddrumsandrockandroll by the Propellerheads. You should check out History Repeating - feat tremendous vocals from Welsh legend Shirley Bassey from the same album, Decksanddrumsandrockandroll .

I did a photo shoot with Liz Fraser many years ago when she was the singer in the Cocteau Twins ...
