Metalhead "elites" don't think of the Black Album as a true MetallicA album. Probably because it's not as fast or hard as their past albums. Or because it was so commercially successful. But, that album was so good. Not my favorite of theirs but still a great album. They spent 3 years touring for that record! That's how successful it was.

Die hard long time Metallica fan here- since about 1985 and I love this album! That made metal mainstream with this album for sure. The only albums I’m not a fan of are load and reload. Some songs on those I like but I don’t ever listen to them but I listen to Metallica EVERY morning on my work ride! I just put all the Metallica albums on my iPod and plug it in on shuffle.

This was one of Metallica's biggest singles from their 1991 self-titled "black" album... 5 singles from that record made MTV including this one... 'Enter Sandman' ... 'The Unforgiven' ... 'Sad but true' ... 'Nothing else matters'... the album has sold 17 million copies in the US & is Metallica's biggest selling album. "Wherever I may roam" was Metallica's unending tour schedule til that point... they had been on the move since 1983... their first US tour was in a U-Haul truck w/ the band Raven... they went to Europe in 1984, traveling in a rented van. 1985 saw Metallica's first major tour w/ W.A.S.P. and finally having a tour bus! And 1986 saw them open for Ozzy Osbourne... That year, their bassist Cliff Burton was killed on tour. They got bassist Jason Newsted and kept going into 1987. They had to grieve their loss on the road... then they toured w/ Van Halen in 1988... Headlined an arena tour in 1989 w/ Queensryche. So it was their perception of life on tour...always on the move. Recording, touring w/ few breaks in between. This 5th Metallica album took a year to record and cost 1 million $$ and 3 marriages ending for the band members. The album hit #1 in 1991 and stayed on the charts until 1996... Metallica toured relentlessly from 1991 all the way to 1994 for this 1 album. They would not return w/ a new album until 1996.

Enter Sandman, Nothing else matters..pretty much all their stuff is fire 🔥 I finally have been able to listen to them again more. They was my brothers most favorite of all bands and music. He passed away in 2012. It was hard to hear Metallica since. But yeah I like the feeling it gives me now. Memories of us at their concert, banging our heads so hard and fast. Good times ❤💔

Formed in LA but a Bay Area band for many years till Hetfield moved to Colorado, still kept his ranch in Marin down from the Skywalker Ranch but he'd had it with Marin County snobs. I followed these guys for years and even worked on Lars house at one point. Some favorites are...Master of Puppets, Blackened, One...too many to list when I think about it. They're still going strong, saw them at AT&T Park before Super Bowl 50, better than the half time show during the game.

@Susan Corr Ok and? Real Musicians grow. Thats what they did. They could've written as much Thrash songs as they want but the same shits getting boring, the question after finishing AJFA with a big bang dyers eve was, whats left there to do, grow up or being stuck in the same shit forever. No matter if The Black Album didn't have a Thrash song, The tour for the Album was amazing because they still Thrashed and James had not lost his voice at that point. Stop crying and get real. It's an amazing album and if you don't like it its your problem. The Black Album is musically genius. Simple but effective.

Not prostitutes, groupies ... masses of young girls throwing themselves at the band. Drugs and women were usually free for the stars. I was a field service tech in the 80s-90s and probably put 100,000 miles on METALLICA songs alone. try FUEL, KING NOTHING, UNTIL IT SLEEPS. NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. Love they way you guys bang that shit out.
