How did a scrawny point guard from Canada steal Shaquille O'Neal’s MVP?
Shaq was the most dominant player we’ve seen since Wilt Chamberlain
He dropped 30 points and 10 rebounds on the regular.
But in 2005 Shaq met his match...
180 pound point guard Steve Nash

Nash was not a failure in Dallas. He was twice an All-Star and All-NBA Third Teamer. Plus he was only 30 when he returned to Suns (where he started his career) in 2004. Not quite an “aging point guard.” Shaq helped Miami Heat go from 42 to 59 wins, but Nash led Suns from a record of 29-53 the year before without him to an NBA-best 62-20 in 2004-05 with him. Shaq’s impact with Heat was great, but Nash’s impact was even more impressive. I think Nash’s 2nd MVP the year after (2005-06) was the the more doubtful one, as that was the season that Kobe averaged 35 ppg and scored 81 In one game as a one-man army for the Lakers. Dirk and LeBron also had greater seasons. But in 2004-05, I think it was Nash who fully deserved it.

Huh thats weird cuz I thought MVP = Most Valuable Player. And if you look up the actual definition of MVP. In team sports, a most valuable player award, abbreviated 'MVP award', is an honor typically bestowed upon an individual whose "individual performance" is the greatest in an entire league, for a particular competition, or on a specific team. Which is why most if not all mvp awards in the nba were given to those who were averaging 25-30ppg with 12-15rpg if you a center or pf with the exception of steve nash he was the first and only guy to average less than 20 points and still get an mvp award because he had alot of hype back then. And If you really think shaq and kobe were just "1 on 1 players" then they wouldnt have gotten 9 rings in total lmao. Steve nash has 0. Sometimes being too much of a team player doesnt = winning.
@DrugzMunny
@DrugzMunny Жыл бұрын
This video leaves out something quite crucial. 11.5 APG was the most assists that anyone in the league had averaged in 10 years since '95 Stockton. He also shot 50/43/88 that year. Do you suppose his sub-20 PPG had something to do with the fact that he was helping his teammates score? To suggest that 2005 was Shaq's year to win MVP is a little strange when you consider that his PPG, RPG, and BPG were higher in almost every single previous season that he played. 2005 was statistically the worst season of his career up to that point. Also, the Heat had 59 regular season wins and then Suns had 62 regular season wins. Like, the Suns had the #1 record in the league. And Shaq missed 3 more games than Nash.

There is an unwritten rule that if you won the MVP award in the previous year, then you basically won't win the award again unless you're just obviously better than everyone else. Even still, Nash really did not deserve this award over Shaq or Kobe. I say this as someone who grew up in Nash's home town. There was a certain amount of pride in seeing Nash win, but he REALLY didn't deserve it. I know it's boring to give the same award to the same one or two players for multiple years in a row, but it's only fair.

Nobody else in history was as efficient a shooter as Nash. He got at least 50% FG, 40% 3pt, and 90% FT 4 years out of 5, and only missed getting 5 in a row by .1% on free throws shooting 89.9% in 06-07. No other player in history has gotten more than 2. Larry Bird and Kevin Durant both did it twice. Also he was the best and most consistent point guard in the league for the early 2000’s. 8 all star selections, 7 all-NBA teams, including 3 first team selections, 5 time assist champion. We haven’t seen a ballhandler as good in a decade. Plus his team was very good when he played.

Nash was an amazing point guard, arguably a top 5 at that position (definitely at least top 10). He had a pass first mindset, opportunistic scorer and always gave it everything on the court. He's also arguably one of, if not the, greatest shooter in NBA history. He's the only person to 50/40/90 four times, in fact he was only 1% off of averaging 50/40/90 for his whole career (49/43/90). So fuck that. I respect work and all around plays not genetic roulette and doing pretty much noting related to basketball...

I agree 100% the other year Kobe was 35 + points a game and did finish 4th LeBron was 30 or 31 a game Dirk had an amazing year and I agree with you 100% why that happened and when I seen it back then I was blown away. I thought it was the worse pic in the history of the NBA both years Nash was a little water bug and he did help make Stoudemire a stud but they also didn't make it to the final either year either!

Thanks kobe was 4th l know all that it was the worst pic in the history of the NBA and Nash wasn't even the leading scorer on his team shawn Marion was I know all that. Nash averaged 18.3 points and something like 11.6 assists LeBron average 30 or 31 that year and was second Dirk and D Wade also had good years I'm not a LeBron fan I do like Kobe everyone during that time knows why Steve Nash was picked I'm not going to say it because I'm not going to stir up anything. I don't know that Shaq should have but it sure shouldn't have been Steve Nash because there was plenty of players to pick from . Just my opinion I just remember it very well. 1. Nash was 30 that season, that's usually the peak of the prime for most players, not exactly aging. 2. Dallas a failed experiment? Hadn't made the playoffs for 8 years when Nash (and Nowitzki) arrived and went on to 2 second rounds and 1 WCF. Yes, the 2004 season was a failure (playing Antoine Walker so much was a big mistake by Nelson). Nash to Phx was a great story but you could argue that Marion was just as valuable to the team. But the same can be said of Wade's value to Miami in 2005. It's too bad that the actual record of the team mattered that much as you could make great cases for Garnett and LeBron that season.
