As a fellow piano player, I stand in awe of this man. He has taken one of my favorite songs and made it his own. He was quite simply the best jazz pianist of the 20th century. I'm only sorry I will never have the chance to meet him.

I have this set... The Someone To Watch Over Me, as Oscar once confessed, was a tribute to Art Tatum -- and he quotes Art here a few times. But... Is this better than Art's? Maybe it is, but Art got there first, and Oscar learned from Art. In any case... This is beyond human... I wish there was a transcription of this so I, a mere mortal, could look why it is impossible to even get close...

Very much, but also very OP. There's a brilliant section in an interview with Basie and Peterson where Basie asks Peterson to show the sort of thing Tatum used to do to 'destroy' piano players; Peterson says he's unable to imitate Tatum; and Basie responds that he doesn't need to imitate Tatum, he does it already himself! Peterson then plays the start of Someone to Watch Over me: At the 37:04 mark kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHmki4Nto7yibKM
