A game with no strings attach. Feature Complete, no denuvo, no "Online-Only", a launcher you can skip, no microtransactions, actual good content, a ton of replayability. I didn't buy it on Day 1 because it sounds almost too good to be true, but it is. And now I'm 42 hours in, loving everything about it, and the fact that I only have 14 achievements still, I know there's a lot left to explore.

"The bar hasn't been raised" - For someone like me (40 years old), I think this hits the nail on the head right there. That "bar" was already set long ago, but has been *seriously slipping* over the past decade. In my opinion, this is a return to more "classic" expectations, where games have been *thoroughly* tested before release and contain the complete game in one neat package. We've become so accustomed to games that release to a day-one patch with major bugs, microtransactions, always-online connectivity and a store that we've forgotten what it's like to simply receive THE GAME and that's it. I know many developers are beholden to shareholders, but perhaps they need to set new expectations and ease up a bit. Anyway, let's hope some lessons can be learned from this.

Its mostly because companies are always trying to get as much money as they can, so they release half-baked games with quarter of the usual development time in the hopes that people buy them, and people do. BG3 is a prime example of letting the developers cook.

I’m not much younger than you. And although I feel the same way, I often wonder if the change is more with us. Remember back in the day when it would take 4-11 CDs, and literally all day to download a game? Some games would literally crash if you alt tabbed? Lag ~ be it ping or CPU was acceptable. Yea, annoying - but we dealt with it, because we had to. There wasn’t a choice. We’d bitch, and laugh but we’d still play. Where as no a days, that’s a legitimate excuse for people to completely quit, and uninstall. Updates? Lol. Depending on a game, maybe you’d get them every couple of years. ( I personally miss when balance stuff wasn’t added all the time. Let things be broken. Let people solve it themselves.) But also being young, we would be incredibly happy/mind blown just when the graphics would get better. and play demos on repeat. Don’t get me wrong, since WoW’s success games ( single player games included) saw the money that could be made, and instead of companies making games to be different/stand out from each other, they’ve been mimicking each other instead. Take: FF11 vs Lineage 2 vs EverQuest vs WoW. Each one of those feels completely different, had completely different leveling experiences, class systems, gearing experiences, ways to tell stories. To now any mmorpg to each other. Using color coded gear, max level gear just being the best, quests being the only way to effective level, leveling up instantly, the lore being told to you through questing and so on. Pretty much the same PvP systems, no real punishment for dying ~ and even for games that do punish dying it’s to the complete other extreme where you loose everything. Nothing in between like back in the day, where even every games death system was completely different. Meaning, different risks. It also used to be an accomplishment to get to max level. The game was about playing it, trying to get it. But now, it’s like you get to max level to really start playing / matter. Where as in older games, a low level could raid, and be legitimately useful. If the class wasn’t popular. You could contribute, easily. But this is where gamers can be at fault too: Only wanting the best of the best. Most geared out, max level etc. People complaining that it should be easier to level and get geared. Instead of just accepting and rewarding no lifers, and those who sacrifice to dedicate more time. I’m sure we were close to the same age, you remember hearing stories of people literally dying, loosing their jobs/marriages over gaming too much. Those people should be rewarded. As, you can’t do stuff like that these days. As if someone can play 5 hours a week, get to max level and only do 10-15% less damage/healing than someone whose putting in 50. Even though I can’t be a nolifer anymore, those people ought to be rewarded. But people complain, things get made easier ~ And that’s a direct result of gamers complaining. Though the fault of companies too. I’m just trying to say, I don’t think the fault only lies with companies, but us too.

Why buy the game once to play splitscreen with your friends/family, when each of them can buy a copy to play over the internet? Obviously that's not true, I hope. With how far consoles have advanced and gotten better since the Xbox 360/PS3 days I'm still surprised that so many AAA Games have zero spiltscreen even though there's no time better for consoles than now to have it as an option, yet most games don't have it oddly enough.

I'm assuming the business models are different compared to the business models that pushed out some of the best games around 2006-2012. Most games coming out then were completed and we had 5-6 different good games to play on either the Xbox 360 or ps3 at the time. The only thing the gaming industry has going for it are basic small team made indie games so something needs to change. I am a big fan of triple A titles when they are done right, much more of a fan than indie games. Indie games won't save gaming but they'll give you something to do for a few days. Overall every single time I see anyone talking about how gaming has gone to crap there is always a giant coping comment at the top saying "gaming isn't dead we have amazing indie games!" When in reality the gaming industry has gone to shit.

Honestly, games like “Aliens: Fireteam Elite” and “Predator: Hunting Grounds” have solid foundations for games, but are limited by the fact that they’re live service games. If these mechanics were implemented in a single-player campaign that didn’t require an internet connection, they’d be god-tier IMO.

Just recently I found the kickstarter for Ratatan, a sequel to the Patapon series from the PSP days that is being made by most of the original crew. They went to kickstarter because their respective studios they worked at weren't interested in funding the project. They were asking for $140k USD roughly and were allowed to take their project public. They were funded in 47 minutes and are closing in on $1mil USD in funding. Fans want good games and are more than happy to pay for them, even significantly more so than asking price, to get them. I backed it and I am happy to wait until 2025 for it to release. But also it struck a chord with me because it is a game genre which has gone with little to no major interaction from the mainstream; a combination rhythm and command game, and I consider my pledge to their project an investment in hopefully expanding the genre itself, not just for the game. Clearly there is a demand for this game and the amount of funding that the kickstarter has raised shows their studios had NO CLUE how valuable the idea was and weren't willing to take the risk. Most studios seem averse to taking risk these days and risk is what we need. Take the chances on the weird mutations, the smaller genres, the original ideas.

4:57 - Not just because of that, the game has almost unparalleled interactivity, player choice and variation in how to approach different tasks and the level design is just insane. I can't say it does anything new specifically that Larian hasn't already done, but it just takes everything that Larian is good at and brings it on a completely different level. I am playing this game in a solo playthrough as well as in coop with my friends and so far I have experienced two distinctly different stories, with different events and mood in general. Like in coop playthrough we had to kill one of the companions, because they attacked us and we never pursued or experienced her story while in my solo playthrough I didn't kill her and went along with her quest and it resulted in me having a completely different experience, like I literally was exploring a whole new different area, because of that. Mindblowing.

This is just act 1, act 2 becomes more linear but act 3 is a buggy nightmare and unfinished, the last sections of act 3 in particular feels extremely rushed. The ai in act 3 just gives up too and is one of the worst and most game breaking ai's I've ever seen ( literally, it broke my game three times in act 3, I even missed out on one of the main villains completely because of it ). The progression also feels like it just gives up in act 1, there's basically almost no progression past that in terms of gear I struggled really hard to find anything interesting in act 3 beyond a shortsword and dagger from the MSQ and the companion storyline rewards ( the staff I got was arguably worse than the act 1 staff I had ). So many levels is just hp too it's really boring progressing your character it's only in act 1 really where it excites you.
@NoName-ym5zj

@@jag764 not at all, perhaps you just haven't experienced it, but yet again there is a lot of variation in act 2 dependinding on your actions and a lot of different events that may or may not happen in the Shadowlands. Progression is different for different classes, but it's not Larian problem it's D&D 5e problem and yeah I would agree if you are a martial class it's like ... more HP and extra attack if you are lucky. Can't speak for ACT 3 as of now, I heard from some they get huge lag in Shadowlands on their 3080, but here I am with pretty good FPS on my 1060 3GB. Same thing with the city, heard some people have performance issue, but most of the people I know have no problems there with subpar systems similar to mine.

It's all about player retention. It used to be a good game was a game that was good enough to warrant you returning to it five, ten, forty times. A good game was something with a limited campaign, but one you wouldn't mind replaying over and over. It used to be that retention was guaranteed by narrative innovation, mechanics-based novelty or just having such an iron-clad gameplay loop that you wouldn't mind running through the same funhouse two million times. Then came World of Warcraft. Other MMOs existed before it, sure, but WoW went mainstream in ways EverQuest or RuneScape could ever dream of. WoW showed the world that another path to retention involved perpetual novelty. Instead of telling players to wait for one or two expansion packs, you could get them to stay with you for *decades* if you kept the reward circuit active - and this conicided with the development of the industry to such an extent that most games being released became one-and-done affairs. Even today, people buy games, complete them and either let them rot in their Steam library or try and sell the disc if they can. Other companies took notice and figured you could hijack's a player's interest in other genres, too - and that gave birth to Live Service gaming as we know it. It's hard to believe now, but there used to be a time where gamers at large and industry commentors were looking forward to Destiny's release, because the concept of a perpetual shooter designed from the ground up to be narratively shared with other players was groundbreaking. Now, there isn't a single AAA shooter in existence (and especially none from Actiblizz) that doesn't have aspirations of being your next money pit. Larian, on the other hand, is dead-set on sticking to the earlier understanding and application of player retention. Create a game and a world that's fascinasting enough to warrant losing yourself in, and you'll come back to it *decades* from now - no DLC required, no Battle Pass. And that's what other studios are confused about. They're of the mind that that games that aren't theoretical founts for infinite cash are a waste of time, and only really see any value-added propositions as a means to squeeze the player base for even more cash. If Larian produces DLC for BG3, it'll be because there's more stories to tell; not because there's money to be made.

I think that this is what a lot of economy-minded people miss when judging the true value/meaning of things, especially story-based things. I find that stories and life are so much more than time, money, and numbers. Stories have value that cannot just be shown with a price tag, and people are starting to realize that about the fictional stories they experience and create and the true story they live in.

I genuinely didn't realize how low my expectations actually have gotten for new games until I played it. Maybe it's because I have been starved of actual great games like it but yeah idk. I also used to be a console gamer all my life, since 2001, till this past year. I only play one game on my console now because I can't transfer progress to PC and everything else i play is on PC. I'm over the console stuff.

Well, baldurs Gate did revolutionize the genre, but I don't think what it did will be used in many other games. The revolution here is the D&D mechanics it's not what skyrim did with the open world and rpg mechanics. What gta 3 did to open worlds or what zelda did with physics and etc, but it did do something revolutionary and unique, which I think is more important instead of trying to make a revelutionary game like dark souls 1, last of us or TES.

@@jakubviskup977 there's % hit chance in BG3 in combat where the enemy and you the player will roll dice in order to attack and defend. Then there are modifiers to this, sometimes you can 1d4 meaning an additional 4 sided die which can have additional effects like acid, fire, cold etc. Then there are saving throws affected by your base stats like charisma, constitution, strength etc. Actually the game is so hard on the middle difficulty because of the base % hit chance you get in battle, I had to start from scratch again. I was stuck in one of the Act 1 missions with no other choice than to either restart the game or go back maybe 4~5 hrs, so I just restarted the game. But this game does have a ton of D&D elements in it.

Heck even multiple of them even if they can't literally buy them. Some weeks after Tears of the Kingdom was released I saw a bunch mother truckers already begging for the next mainline Zelda game when the majority was still going through the game, and another set of bruhs doing the tipical "NINTENDO DOOMED!?" Post because there was no mayor release between Zelda and Pikmin. We don't need the next big thing when the current big thing just released. My favourite game this year is Atelier Ryza 3. While it does have DLCs, they're are mostly cosmetics and does not disrupt the full game experience. Gust (the developer of Atelier series) has improved their game since the first Ryza and their games get better with each entry graphically and technically. The series started with a typical dungeon-crawling mechanic where you can't even swim on the water surface to an open world where you can dive underwater and even find secret area within it. The synthesis, combat and exploration mechanics were all improved throughout the series which at one point made me question how is it even possible for a developer to consistently raise the quality of their games without sacrificing all the stuff they've implemented in their previous games. Ryza 3 will surely get my GOTY vote if it's nominated at all, knowing the fact that Zelda TOTK and the upcoming Armored Core game would most likely be nominated for GOTY.

In my personal opinion, the last console to really make any big impact on gamers and blow everyone away was probably xbox 360. Even today, you can play a game from 2023 and compare it to Half Life 2 and except for the frame rate, it mostly holds up. There just aren't enough graphical advancements in current technology to impress us anymore. It seems like the developers have only really made advancements in forcing you to sign up for services and robbing you blind with DLC. It's not about exceeding expectations and impressing us anymore, and that's why people are losing interest in gaming.

The newer tools have given the devs a lot of freedom to express themselves but in the process they’ve lost their soul. Also back in the day only really talented developers who were passionate about gaming and border line autistic with the tools at the time were in the game. Now with the ease of use you have a lot of mid devs which are just helping output trash

Reminds me of Jordan Peele's movies. People were talking about "IS he the GREATEST director of all time?" No. But the movies felt like they were made for ADULTS and people are so divorced from media that isnt for families or manchildren that they were absolutely blown away.

To say that Baldurs Gate 3 is this well received just because it doesn't have microtransaction is a complete insult to the game. This game is genuinely a masterpiece, it has nothing to do with "respecting" players, even if that's a bonus.

Game Dev here. There are a ton of games that do it horrible for DLC and abuse the patch release. BUT there is a reason many studios changed to the DLC "live game" system. The DLC system prevented countless professionals from losing their jobs. The old "one and done" games saw waves of hires and fires and game devs would have to get used to being unemployed 3-4 months out of a year. There are always bad actors, but since 2008, the consistency of employment has been mostly stable compared to the ways of old. You can respect the player AND release DLC. Publishers do enslave the smaller studios and force the deadlines and make it buggy as shit. The "waiting for games" many studios can't live without funding for 6 years. I get the general feelings, I am a gamer as well. I also understand the business side and the actual cost it takes to keep a studio and employees funded. Divinity was a success, but it had just as much of a chance to be nothing but obscure and sell at a negative and the studio wouldn't be alive to make Baldur's Gate 3. Added for the amount of successes, there are exponentially higher amount of great games that release and only gain traction with a small audience and the studio up and dies or has to lay-off 90% of it's folks because they're out of money. I could do an entire Ted Talk on the subject including essentially the Death of original IPs outside small indie studios and indie studio lifestyle. In short, Live service games keeps studios open and employees hired AND bad actors found a way to abuse the system which soured it for the mass market.
