This is fascinating as I am beginning to trace my roots via Somerset Place. I am a descendant Pete Fenner who was my maternal great grandfather

Thanks for commenting, David! It's great that you're tracing your family history. We always love meeting descendants who've traced their ancestry back to Somerset Place.

I can't believe nothing was said that there main crop was rice because Mr.Collins had figured out Lake Phelps was higher than the surrounding land because it's spring fed so he could put in dikes and flood the land as needed. Also Confederate General Pettigrew was raised in a home that's gone now not to far from this home and General Pettigrew is buried in a beautiful little cemetery in walking distance from the Collins home.

Thanks for commenting! The survey that determined Lake Phelps was higher than the surrounding swampland, creating optimal conditions for rice fields, was made before the creation of the Lake Company and the involvement of Josiah Collins I. We also cover the history of the Pettigrew's Bonarva plantation in a two-part miniseries: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4W7gYmboayIpZo kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4PMpIGYaaytd68
