I suspect it might have to do with the Chaos Emeralds. In Sonic 1, Sonic turns into Super SAnic while showing pain and/or fear, and then also makes a demonic expression, which never happened again. By the time Sonic 2 or Subspace Emissary happened, the Super Transformation became normal. Edit: In hindsight, no. It's referred to as the TAS Game Genie, so it's probably a meta thing.
