LOVE the "don't I get a cookie" convo with the context of the cookie dough line in season 7 Also love the bit where spike assumes that buffy fed angel blood all the time, because it really shows how spike and angel feel differently about their vampireness. Angel is ashamed of not only what he's done but what he IS, while Spike, even once he's enouled, never really seems ashamed of his vampireness but IS ashamed of the things he's DONE, to buffy especially

The “model for love” part and “emotional DNA” to verbalise people’s relationships is absolutely brilliant. Especially in this example, Buffy’s instance moving on from Angel...to Riley. And ESPECIALLY the problem from insisting you “get over it”; cleaving yourself from your ex and discovering your own person again is such a difficult process. You’ve described it perfectly. 👌👌👌

I still think Willow's spell worked from the beginning, but it's just that what she said in front of the mirror was too vague: "it is my will that this book speaks its words to me" (the words in a book are not spoken, but written), "it is my will that my heart is healed" (the organ is not actually damaged). Great review and I had a great time yesterday night (for me) with the editing, Ian!!

Good point! The spell only seems to be able to interpret things literally: make Giles blind, make Spike propose, make demons find Xander. So happy that you're back! I just re-watched this episode a few days ago and I noticed that Buffy states that she needs to "give up the bad boy thing". Was it intentional from the start that Riley was going to be the rebound guy? I know he seems to be one of the most hated characters in the Buffyverse (not the actor's fault), but he was just too bland for Buffy. I recall at one point that Joss Whedon stated that "Something Blue", "Who Are You?" and "Intervention" from Season 5 were a way to put Buffy and Spike together because it couldn't actually happen on the show yet at that point, but both the powers that be and viewers saw the chemistry between Sarah Michelle Gellar and James Marsters from the start (recalling where Spike first sees Buffy dancing at The Bronze in Season 2's "School Hard"). Even when they're fighting, there's something between them that is unique. Giles' reaction to the spell when Buffy and Spike are kissing and making wedding plans is priceless. Willow's use of magic to solve problems is definite foreshadowing. Favorite line, Spike: "I"m not the one who wanted "Wind Beneath My Wings" for the first dance."
@PassionoftheNerd7 жыл бұрын
From what I've heard in interviews, him being the rebound and the opposite of Spike was the reason they brought him on.

And it makes sense that Buffy would choose him, too. She's a sensible girl, and she knows she needs a healthy relationship--a boy she can introduce to her mom and can bring with her to outings with friends--a guy who actually gets along with all of her friends! Her relationship with her friends was able to take center stage in seasons 4 and 5, thanks to that decision. Narratively, it worked out well.

Love this episode. Gilles, Buffy, Spike, and Xander are all hilarious in it. And the show makes this episode so much more than just a one-off with the foreshadowing of Willow and her misuse of magic, as well as references to past characters and events (Rat Amy and D'hoffryn). Also, some of the best episodes of the series are the ones that have multiple scenes of the characters in one room together. The chemistry and timing and delivery between the characters is part of what makes this show so special.

So glad you're back! Season 4 overall is lower on my list of favorite Buffy seasons, but it still has some of my favorite episodes in the show. "Something Blue" is probably tied for 1st in my list of Favorite Comedic Episodes, along with "Tabula Rasa" - and just like "Tabula Rasa", "Something Blue" is deceptively emotional, and circles around Willow's reliance on magic to solve her problems, and the negative effect it has on the people around her. The more I think about it actually, the more I see those two episodes as a two-part story, with "Tabula Rasa" being the unfortunate sequel in which Willow this time knowingly tampers with the minds of her friends, and unlike "Something Blue" faces much harsher consequences because of it. Anyway, I'm rambling, but I'll be curious to see if you reference back to "Something Blue" once you reach "Tabula Rasa", because I think there's a lot of interesting and poignant parallels to be had there!

they're both my go-to episodes for a laugh - weird that i never consciously connected them as willow spells! in this she repeatedly alludes to wanting to force oz to stay/wanting the immediacy of magic. good, subtle character building

I love this episode but something bothers me about it. Willow was given about two episodes between her break up and it seemed like her friends (mostly Xander) just wanted her to get over it. Willow was given about the same amount of time as buffy was given to get over a one night stand. Willow was with oz for a long time, Willow deserved more time...

It might have something to do with the next episode, as spoiler free as possible the two actors had such great chemistry that one of the plans from when the series began came to fruition.

@spangelicious8377 жыл бұрын
Rowena McKay Yes she does call them on it.
@Scheherazade-pr4jt5 жыл бұрын
I think it's more that they want and hope that she's getting over it. Willow has often been the one who they go to for consolation, commiseration and advice. I think it's uncomfortable for them to see her have to deal with such pain and so they at first interpret her behaviour as getting better. I think Spike's line where he bluntly and cuttingly points out that she's not is telling of their denial and willingness to not perceive her emotional state accurately. It also shows us how observant Spike is. He doesn't have the long and close bond with Willow That the others have with her and yet is able to perceive straight away the emotional fallout she's dealing with.
@hciapetus12515 жыл бұрын
I’ll try not to ramble too much, but I have a bad habit of doing that on topics where I could babble about it all day. Anyway, I feel like there’s a few reasons for why Buffy and Xander couldn’t understand why it was taking Willow “so long” to get over Oz. 1) Out of the three, Willow was the most level headed and logical one of them. To them, she should have been able to reason with herself why Oz left and move on. 2) Both Xander and Buffy were in the beginning stages of new relationships; Buffy flirting with Riley, and Xander dating and sleeping with Anya. In the beginning stages, it’s easy to not remember the feelings of an emotional breakup. 3) Probably the most important one... Willow and Oz had a secure relationship; Buffy and Xander never had that. Buffy’s relationship with Angel was tragic poetry; Xander’s relationship with Cordy was the “different sides of the track” type. Neither got passed a certain point where they had the type of security Willow and Oz had. Willow didn’t just go through a bad breakup, she lost something that was secure and stable with her. While it does partially parallel with Buffy needing to move on from Angel, it’s important to the episode that it was Willow’s loss and path to the dark side of magic that was highlighted. Those are two things that Buffy and Xander never had or don’t understand. I love this episode so much. Lol.

Thank you so much for keeping this up! This was a great guide, as always. And thank you for that after credits for us Spuffy folks. I think it's interesting how Buffy's lines about pain being part of a passionate relationship relates to her relationship with Spike. Whether or not she loved him in season 6, their relationship was sure full of passion, from hate to desire to love or like. They caused each other lots of pain, but ultimately that pain made the characters move forward and develop(e.g. Spike getting his soul, Buffy forgiving and helping him) to a much more healthy and stable place.

And to expect that same tapestry to emerge in the next relationship is a good way to prevent love from happening again; but in truth the idea of “getting-over-it” is probably a lie. Implying that we somehow clear away refuge of the last relationship, find our way back to emotionally unsullied rebuilt "single," and adventure onward, that just isn't what letting go actually is. Letting go is a muscle untensing. And though a relationship may end that doesn't leave us more incomplete than we were. Everything shared, everything we became in their light, and all the love they gave us-we carry it with us. Always.”

So good to hear your voice speaking about Buffy again! I loved the bit in this episode where Buffy asks Giles be the one to give her away at the wedding. I always found that so touching, even with the layers of humor around it. I like Willow a lot, but can't help but get increasingly frustrated with her as she uses magic to cope throughout the seasons, knowing others around her have gone through pain and loss the hard way (in Buffy's case, the REALLY hard way of having actually killed the man she loved!). I always appreciated Tara's hard line on magic and trying to keep it in check and hold Willow accountable. But in the end, Willow is still one of my favorites - it can't be easy being the hero's best friend! Everyone has their own flaws and that's what makes each character so great in this universe.

*SPOILERS* I know this is a spoiler-free guide, but I think the Buffy and Spike of this episode is worth talking about, even if just in the comment section. I'm not sure if their "relationship" here can be considered foreshadowing, as I'm pretty sure their actual relationship further on wasn't quite in the writers minds yet? but maybe I'm wrong about that. But anyways, I do wonder if this is when they realized Buffy and Spike (/SMG and James Marsters) have off the charts romantic and sexual chemistry. I mean, clearly School Hard and Becoming are already great examples of their chemistry, but this is the first time it's explicitly romantic. And maybe it's where the nugget of the idea for their future started?

This episode is such a cleverly constructed comedic episode. I don’t just mean funny. There’s drama and stakes, but it’s so well paced and put together. Many episodes in season 4 really get to the heart of who these characters are and this is one of the best. From Willow to Giles to Spike. I always wondered if metaphorically it was significant that Willow as the spirit, views Xander as a demon magnet and Buffy as being in love with a vampire ( especially considering Buffy's line about pain and love at the beginning). I guess it's just the way love is viewed in the Buffyverse.

Every time I see this one after watching the show in it's entirety I wonder if Spike thinks of this spell later one when you know (spoiler) happens. :D

You're most probably the 1,000,000th. You'll know that's especially the case if you go to the Elysian Fields fanfic site dedicated to Spuffy fics (usually of the naughty variety).

Yes!!! I'm so glad you're back. This is my favorite episode of the show (Besides Once More With Feeling, of course) and i've been so excited for this video! Great job, as always :)

Glad to see you back and reviewing one of my favorite episodes of the series. You always point out things that tend to fly over my head, and the big one here is realizing that the key word in Willow's spell that caused it to work the way it did was "passion". Good call. You've actually inspired me to write an analysis on some of the show's themes that have been stewing around in my head for awhile. If you'd care to have a look at it, I'd really welcome your opinion on it.

He's back!! Hallelujah! Love the ending of this video.. I love Something Blue, hilarious yet emotional on Willow's behalf. Foreshadowing throughout and the quick quips are brilliant. Always look forward to this one on re-watches. Even more so now that I will have these amazing reviews to look forward to after. Glad you're back and keep em coming! :P

3:27 That may just be the funniest scene in both series recaps thus far, and having just come off Something Blue and Hero in rewatching the shows that's saying something.

Thank you. Having this guide back has greatly lifted my spirits. I've been feeling a bit shellshocked as yesterday I buried my Mum, a life-changing event if ever there was one, even if one has been preparing by occasionally watching The Body for the last 10+ years. Yes, doing that really helped. And yes, having this guide back is a truly wonderful thing.

One of my favorite things about Something Blue is that when the spell is lifted and Spike and Buffy break apart, if you watch closely Spike does not look all that upset until AFTER it's clear that Buffy is horrified to realize she was kissing him. Maybe he doesn't mind kissing her all that much, hmmm...
@tanzeemahmed71966 жыл бұрын
Jean Phillips-Weiner Also, at the end, why was she just sitting in front of him... staring, before Willow brought over the cookies? Hmmm...
@BooksMusicMe175 жыл бұрын
I always felt like it wasn't the kissing that horrified him so much as how sappy he acted.

its been said by the writers even that from the beginning spike has had an attraction to her, but he was loyal to drusilla and of course wouldn’t act on it. Even beyond the attraction its pretty evident that spike has had respect and admiration for her, like when hes watching the way she fights, or even in this season when hes stuck in the lab and comments “i dont care how brilliant she is”. That respect and admiration he has for her is always there, just first as an enemy, later as an ally and then as a lover.

it's actually in the screenplay (in this exact moment) that they're both sexually attracted to each other, interestingly enough!

Hooray!!! Been waiting for 'Something Blue' review for so long! This is a wonderful comic episode with so much heart. Keep up the great work on the guide x

I've always loved Something Blue for the comedy of it all. Your commentary again shows me that the threads of later seasons, particularly the much-hated "magic is drugs" in season 6, have been carefully laid throughout these earlier seasons. Season 4 has never been my favorite, but I'm coming to appreciate it more through your guides. Thanks Ian.
@Kayjee177 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I agree with the word botched. Yes, they got very heavy handed with it all, but if you look at it as literally an addiction to drugs + power it works really well for everything that Willow goes through. The biggest problem was that all the characters in season 6 were going through dark periods, so there weren't any lighter episodes like The Zeppo or Something Blue to sweeten the bitterness.
@Kayjee177 жыл бұрын
So many people try, and fail, repeatedly when they're trying to quit drugs that making Willow's struggle anything less than a true slog would have made light of the reality of what they were trying to show. All those ups and downs that Willow fought through made her reunion with Tara that much sweeter - and her descent into Dark Willow an understandable choice to deal with the pain.

Thank god you've returned! Great review. I agree, its always a pleasure when the show plays around with the characters in a playful, comedic tone, but not to the point where its destructive. Episodes like this were great for that. A great balance.

God I was missing your guides! I love your new hints to the following seasons (e.j. Grave) and I really appreciate you asking yourself how these comedic episodes work in a dramatic show like Buffy. I am 100% satisfied by your answer regarding the point of view. And after having finished the show and re-re-rewatched this episode, I am still surprised to see how such a seemingly trivial episode foreshadows a lot to come! Yet another proof that this show is just the best ever. (btw I had thought about the cookie line too!! a pleasure to see the scenes put together)
