Dang, so Rachel was just a lifelong hater. Who has the energy to spend DECADES in a friendship with someone they hate? That takes work! I had friends from HS I genuinely loved and never spoke to again just because we got too busy to see each other. The effort Rachel had to expend to keep Darcy in her life is...wild

God I forgot how horrible this movie was. I only saw it once and just remembered a lot of bad decisions. You want a better version of this? Go watch My Best Friend’s Wedding. Sure the two women involved are rather new acquaintances, but the woman trying to break up the wedding of her best male friend is shown to be in the wrong. It’s incredibly satisfying to watch compared to this garbage.

Oh gosh, yes! I was literally about to recommend My Best Friend’s Wedding. It’s very much like a “Rich people being messy” genre of film but was marketed as a romcom . It fully coasts on the charm of Julia Roberts and Rupert Everett, though. I don’t think anyone would forgive Julia Roberts character if she wasn’t Julia Roberts. And it’s very of its time, I rewatched it and did not remember the marriage pact being “let’s get married to each other if we are both single by 28” TWENTY-EIGHT? She should be at the club. I remembered them being in their forties for some reason.

I know why this makes me mad, just the worst people making all the wrong decisions. Like we're actually supposed to be on Rachel and Dex's side for cheating just because Rachel saw him first. Like you aren't owed him, Darcy gave you a chance to go for it, you didn't so she was like, handsome rich lawyer, lets go but sure just ruin this life long friendship for this dime store Tom Cruise who is definitely gonna cheat on you too. Like imagine telling other people how you got together. Like Marcus may be trash but at least he's upfront with it. And Ethan, you are an enabling piece of cowardice trash, if you don't want to be with claire, just be an adult and tell her instead of claiming that you are gay and continent hoping

Rachel wants to be friends with Darcy because as long as she has a friend who perceives as 'worse' than her, she can feel better about herself, which is not something I enjoy watching, I love flawed characters, but Rachel has no self-reflection. I would have loved if this movie was a 'sliding doors' movie which changed to Darcy perspective halfway, or something like that, would have been much more interesting, or if Rachel gets Dex then realises she actually doesn't have an attraction to him anymore. There's so many ways this could have gone, and this film/book is the most boring and gross way to go. Love you ripping into it, such a great video.

There is a book from Darcy’s point of view. It’s called… remembering… digging through my brain… Something blue. I read something blue first, I really liked that Darcy was a “bad” person. As far as I remember she is legit an asshole, and kind of delusional about it. but she changes throughout the story (a reasonable amount she doesn’t become an angel). Then I read something borrowed and I was horrified. Rachel was such a peak bitch, and it is never really acknowledged. Awful, awful book. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the movie poster. I can still remember going on a soo many rants about it to so many bored people.😂

I think i would have liked it more if the movie had been about Rachel stopping defining herself by Darcy and then falling due Ethan, rather than getting together with Dex. It makes it feel like Rachel didn't learn anything, just got one over in Darcy. It makes her seem petty.
@LilShopofAli9 ай бұрын
Yes! You hit the nail on the head. The movie makes it seem like she's the bigger person because she doesn't say anything when Darcy brings up the Notre Dame thing but, in the book, especially, it's clear that she's happy that she finally got something that Darcy had. Like it's so funny to me how the story has the nerve to shame Darcy while simultaneously praising Dex and Rachel for being liars and cheaters lol.
@daddishowkey9 ай бұрын
If Rachel was kate hudson and darcy was ginnifer godwin the movie would be very different. The casting is on purpose. The movie is also very one sided, like why dont we know why darcy does what she does. What are her motivations? Who is she as a person?
@swordchild00139 ай бұрын
How do you think the movie would be different? Do you think because if Ginnifer had been Darcy - she would have had more sympathy? I think it would be the same tbh because people like to hate the stereotypical 'hot girl' - and there is only so much you can turn Kate Hudson into girl next door.

So let me get this straight - this man did not communicate his feelings to Rachel when they were younger and dated someone else, then as a grown adult continued to not communicate his problems or work them out with his fiancé (and honestly him despising her is a red flag in and of itself) and started cheating as an outlet to deal instead of just leaving? He didn’t learn emotional availability, effective communication or anything else by the end. He was forced because of consequences finally hitting him into making a choice. WOW… I hope she never does anything at all to make this man uncomfortable because he’ll do literally the same to her and she will never find out about it until he hops to someone else. I wish this movie had been about them growing as adults and learning boundaries instead of another story about a female friendship falling apart because of a lackluster man

Me and my mom used to watch this movie over and over. It's so annoying but, it's like a car crash you can't look away from. If the casting was switched between Kate Hudson & Ginnifer Goodwin, nobody would be supporting Rachel. Darcy was a mean girl & liked embarrassing Rachel to make herself feel better. Rachel was jealous of what Darcy had and couldn't really be proud of her. Dex was a mix of Tom Cruise & that guy from The Arrow show. Dex had no personality and couldn't make a decision. Ethan was passive-aggressive towards Rachel because he liked her. And he couldn't be honest with Claire and say he didn't like her. Claire was doing too much & couldn't take the hint. Marcus was participating in cheating with Darcy. Everybody is trash.

It truly is so so much worse in the books. Darcy is a fat phobic nightmare, Rachel is hard hard hard-core in denial thinking Dex actually loves her, and Dex has Z E R O personality so we can't even understand why either of them love him at all. Everyone told me it "makes more sense" in the books but the only character that's dramatically more tolerable in the books is Ethan. And she uses the Notre Dame thing as a justification way too many times 😂😂😂 Eta: since you pointed out that the movie is a Romcom I think what made the book more entertaining for me was that I didn't read it as a romcom, I read it as a drama. I think that's another reason the movie is was so intolerable for me. Idk if it was the same experience for you.

Our relationship made me miserable, and I became a worse person by staying in it. In the end I "broke up" with my friend, and it set us both free. I watched this movie last year, and it pissed me off too. If I remember correctly, in the flashback scene of Darcy and Dex' first meeting, Rachael declares that she and Dex are just friends, which surprises Dex and prompts Darcy to ask him out. Sure, Darcy knew that Rachael had feelings, but she still denied them in front of the guy, so even if Darcy didn't ask him out, he could have still moved on to someone else, believing that Rachael wasn't interested in him. But Rachael being shy and indecisive is Darcy's fault??

I watched this movie with no context and I HATE that they try to convince me that what Rachel and Dex did was not wrong, that they're meant to be with each other and somehow that makes the cheating valid. It's so fucked up. In High school, I had a friend like Darcy which makes me the Rachel but I would NEVER! Do this to her. We stopped being friends after high school as any sane person would. Don't pretend to be a moral and kind person when you're doing something horrible to a friend. Let's just call it what it is, YOU'RE 👏 A 👏 CHEATER👏

I think Rachel had the susan, from desperate housewives treatment. Rachel, like Susan always acts high and mighty and an angel when in reality, she is a complete hypocrite. She never thinks she does anything wrong when she constantly does. At least Darcy is honest about who she is. Let’s say, she is Gabby from desperate housewives for that reason. The another reason I hate Rachel. She did not permanently choose Jonathon f’ing kransinki. Enough said.

There's definitely something worthwhile in this premise. The relationships of women with each other in regards to how they're "ranked" in society is interesting and I feel if this was explored nowadays it would be kinder to both Darcy and Rachel and not truly pitting them against each other. Rachel can still be insecure and hung up on events of 5th grade but it can be framed as an immaturity needing to be resolved.

I’m so glad someone said this! I remember watching this in middle school and thinking it was so good! It’s basically a femcel revenge fantasy lmao

i hated this movie so much because the main characters were painted as all innocent when they legit had an affair 😭 rachel ruined her friendship just coz she couldn’t admit six years ago that she liked a guy that she willingly gave to her best friend. fk off 😒

I hate read the book hoping that it would get better and Rachel would become a nice person. She didn't. And the sequel made me hate Rachel even more because at least with Darcy, I knew who she was. Edit: I had no idea you read the book as well! The fact people lied to my face and said it was a good book, that's what hurts.

as someone who watched this movie 2 years ago, i can confirm that it is truly horrible & all of the characters are insufferable. i haven’t read the book, but i’m sure it’s not good either 😭

i remember seeing this and absolutely hating the movie. forgot completely about it, and then i watched it again with my best friend where she just went "just so you know, i think this movie is gonna piss you off" and like midway through i just went ??? wait i think i've seen this before, and got flashbacks of anger from the first time i watched it

I think people don't know how to recieve an archetypal "good girl" like Tia Mowry doing everything by the book and *still* not being happy. I appreciate her vulnerability, and I'm invested in her self-discovery journey. I would love to see her withhold a bit more though, people are not kind.

i really like Something Blue though, there's something a lot more compelling about Darcy and her villainous ways. Plus Ethan and her are really sweet together by the end

i cant even find the time to hang out with people i actually like. how did darcy spend her time and effort on a friendship with someone that she had so much resentment for??

OMG the “doubly disloyal” part is so fucking ridiculous 💀 you were so right to make this video, WTF was the author thinking 😂

You should do my best friends wedding. My nana wanted to watch it so I saw it for the first time recently. The main characters suck. Cameron Diaz’s character is great. She is so kind and thoughtful and wants the best for her partner and wants to get to know his friend. She doesn’t act jealous at all. In the end she ends up with the guy.. but why? He sucks and she deserves so much better. Julia Roberts character deserves the guy because they both suck.

This was a great analysis! I get the feeling that the book has a slight autobiographical touch, and the author is living out their fantasy of hooking up with their friend's fiancée. Poorly written novels with selfish main characters with no arc usually give me the feeling, that it's the author's own persona leaking through the pages.

To think there’s a sequel where the friend gets with the guy friend while being pregnant with the guy she cheated on with. The guy didn’t want her or the baby so he threw them away. And the girl tried to backtrack and make her ex fiance think it was his. It tries hard to make her seem better but honestly she didn’t change much other than cleaning the guy friend’s apartment.

I actually enjoy the sequel Something Blue which is sort of a redemption for Darcy. However, I don’t enjoy the Something Borrowed the book Darcy is worse but I felt that Rachel has a lot of issues with Darcy and never breaks up with her and comes out whiny and Dex is passive Even though the movie wasent my favorite I wish it had better so we could have had the sequel Kate and John would have done a good job

All Racheal does is whine and complain. Everyone has something they feel insufficient of but goodness she does whine and focus on herself. In my opinion this makes Racheal more selfish than Darcy
