I've had similar issue with 1.8 ABS. The car was sometimes shutting off at idle. The problem was caused by throttle position sensor.

These do not have crank sensors, just a hallsensor on the distributor, when it's bad the ecu doesnt get rpm anymore and dies or doesn't start. Quick check for that is looking if the rpm gauges comes up when starting or not. Also your car can have a alarm/immobiliser, around the ignition lock, under it is a little rubber piece, if so immo is likely. My 93 has even alarm from factory, so does yours, right next to your coolant bottle is a switch for the alarm. When the immo gets bad, it runs for 2 seconds and then dies, you can get your ecu reflashed so the immo doesnt work anymore or you can loop some wires but i'm not sure about that. Blue coolant sensor is important. Also your throttle body goes bad sometimes, it idles bad when it's bad, sometimes it leaks and needs new gaskets. Also this is a monopoint injection, instead of injecting in the intake, it has a single injector which injects on the throttle valve. These engines are bullet proof, but turboing it makes no sense with the junk stuff on it, better of with a G60 engine to start with which can hold boost way better.

Yeah I found that out today and I actually got a new hall sensor but unfortunately was not able to install it and im gonna need a whole new distributor now so I can have a new hall sensor. The car will run anywhere from 2min-45min its so random. The car idles perfect and revs fine and will show zero sign of dying and then just shuts off and will almost always turn right back on.

My 1.6 did the same, sometimes it didn’t start, sometimes it died under driving. When it does, check the rpm cluster, you see it drops down to zero and doesn’t goes up when cranking. When you compare the hall sensors, you will feel the new one has a way better magnetic field, these things stop working when they get old and lose their magnetic field so the signal gets weak or isn’t even there anymore.

about the shutting off after idling, try putting a fan in front blowing into radiator - it could be a cooling/heating issue. however if you don't notice the temp goin up then it's probably a sensor and not a cooling issue

U can buy a turbo with mainfold from a 1.9 TDI or a 1.6 td, i think it fits without modifications

The 1.8 has single point injection, not a carburator.

I know it’s probably unlikely, but I had an issue with my 20th dying randomly. Long story short, it was a clogged Fuel Filter. I Don’t know anything about this engine and realize mine was a completely different generation, but it’s a thought. Btw name her yet? Lol I’m gonna ask every time now 😏🤷🏼♂️

I think that only mk3 with obd2 plug have immobiliser. Older models as yours don't. And as some guy said check the Vacum system (hoses and ect...) it is really important for older vw engines.

Your problem could be very likely the throttle position sensor or a leak in the vacuum system. Crank sensor does nearly never break on the 1.8L motors. Also consider to pull the codes via the odb (or if it is older a 2K -> ODB adapter) port. Also did you plug in the airbag / abs lights on the left ? Cause in an older vid you just threw it in there and did not pug it in.
@Mk3Smith5 жыл бұрын
Could be Ill keep looking into more and more stuff doesnt seem like a vacuum leak though but maybe. Also the abs light I just put there there isnt any wiring for it at all the car just had a blank more then likely there
@Masseffectinator5 жыл бұрын
@@Mk3Smith Since you got abs mark04 at your savoy, you should definetly have that connector. Especially if you have airbags (wich you have). Maybe it fell down lower into the dashboard. That happens quite often. It is a flat long black connector. That's how you can check if your abs and airbags work right.

I was hopping that you are turboing the car

If your car has an aftermarket radio it might have the immobilizer delete since it only worka with the radio. It might me an issue there. Also just 3.2L swap it. Easy 250hp

Similar situation happened to me. It turned out to be old gas. I burned through the old gas and added new gas. No longer an issue

I told ya it's the ABS one... lol Dude! If you put that turbsky I want to know how! I want my B3 to get boosted too. :D I'll check on mine where the crank sensor is and if I find it I'll make a video on my channel, OK? :) (check your DM in instagram, I made a vid with probably the place of the crank sensor)

@@Mk3Smith Forget about crank sensor this is base engine as it gets, like the " bro" mention above check all the vacuum hoses, when there is a leak engine usually have rough idle and dies especially when hot.
