I think everyone who had a basement back in the 80's used to run up the stairs. These days basements aren't the same, they are basically mini apartments. We had a washer, dryer, and hot water heater. It was dark and usually always leaked and just creepy all the way around.

I think you just told my story but I declined moving back into my childhood home. I regret it, but I had to move on. I feel you on the basement but mine had dust, an old furnace that still scared me and the skeletal remains of an unfinished darkroom. I often wish I moved back in there but met someone and moved out West. Family moved down the FLA. I still can remember sprinting up those steps, hands on the steps to propel me up faster, feeling like I was being chased.

I loved the rare visits to my Grandfather's house in North Chicago. Big rooms, one almost like a ballroom & crazy high ceilings made me feel like a little princess in a big castle. The basement was HUGE, as big as the whole house. Washer & dryer as soon as you walked in but the rest was dark & empty. I always wondered what was lurking in all that dark space & was never brave enough to explore it. Thanks for the memories & the story Clancy. Have a great weekend ❤
