You probably already know but, I have to say it. When you put the new Coleman Mantels on, you are supposed to light them with a match and let them burn completely before you turn the gas on. Once cooled...hit the gas and light the match! My dad charged me with this task every time we set up camp. I'm about your age and I still use the old Coleman and stove too. Great story tonight...love every one. Thank you. God bless.

@tatersneggs2752 жыл бұрын
@Base Camp Chris. Hey Chris..no disrespect but, the mantles turning to ash after burning them first is exactly what is supposed to happen. As soon as you turn the gas on and relight the lantern they harden into a nice, rounded shell and last for a long time. But, if you touch them after the burn and before gas...then yes, they will crumble like ash as you said. I hope this helps. Please try and you will see. Love your videos and never miss one. God bless.

It's about mind over matter and realizing there is nothing there in the dark that isn't there in the light, even if it is Wendigo. I find getting familiar with forest sounds during the daylight hours help people realize this. It also helps to state your intentions before entering any forest telling any resident entities that you are aware of their presence and mean them no harm, so you will accept no harm in return. Try leaving a small offering as part of the process. Always go armed and with tracking because they seem not to mess with armed folks carrying spot devices or others like them. And if after all this you get a strong gut instinct that you aren't wanted there or you're not supposed to be there, listen to your gut and leave, find another forest and repeat or save it for another day. Good luck.

He grew up camping in the Sierra Nevada's (especially the El Dorado National Forest) in the 60's and 70's, and I know it makes him nostalgic for the mountains. I have noticed that every once in a while you will tell your viewers what park you are in, but don't mention the state. My husband knows most of the places you go, but sometimes we have to look them up to get oriented. Those of us stuck in flat Ohio sometimes need a bit of help to know where you are! Thanks for posting these - I especially love the cooking parts, because trying to come up with new cooking ideas for camping is challenging. WOW Chris, showing those Coleman mantels just gave me some warm & fuzzy flashbacks! I am a just little tiny bit older than you, but the memories are pretty much the same. My grandparents even had a fold out camper. I was not interested in sleeping in it, I wanted my tent! I used to make comments like; "Why go camping when you are just bringing everything from home, anyway?" Golly I was such a mouthy 10 yr old!!! LOL I'd get the back of my deserving head "popped" more than a time or a few! (chuckling) It cracks me up when people take their "mobile hotel suites on wheels", complete with apartment sized washer/dryer, built in heater and A/C, 2 - 4 burner stoves, microwave, water heater, shower, toilet, TV's, laptops, cell phones, DVD players, curling irons, hair dryers, sheets, comforters , a library video games with player and call it camping. These things are camping gear? In what way is this camping? It takes folks several days to pack up each time they go, and by the time they finish packing, it's nearly time to come home so they have enough time to unpack and rest before going back to work. LMBO! Oh well, to each their own, just my opinions, never a judgement! If it makes 'em happy, then have FUN and go for it! (silly grins) I'll bring my tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, small cooler with food, I MUST have my old feather pillow and I can't forget utensils with a skillet, I like cooking over a wood campfire. OH! almost forgot - A couple rolls of the camping TP because no job is finished until the paper- work is done and it's just nice to have, too. (wicked grins) I prefer to have some changes of clothing, camp needs to be set up near a stream or creek to wash up in, a compact mirror to comb my hair and call it good! The RV crowd call it "roughing it", I'm okay with that. LOL Just wanted to share some of my thoughts on "camping", hope it's okay? Rosey, loving life in the boondocks of Freeville!

I grew up camping in the Teton Valley region of Idaho in the late 80's early 90's with my grandparents and cousins, both of my grandparents were born and raised in that region. I remember their old tent from the 70's, how durable and strong that beast was! And the Smell was so unique! I was big into UFO's and Bigfoot as a kid and believed EVERYTHING! I used to get so creeped out when us cousins would go walking in the woods after dark to try to scare ourselves. Such great memories.

I grew up with the old Hurricane lanterns as well as in later years we had the Primus pump up kanterns. Only problem with them was the mantles mostly didn't last as they broke so yes always a ready supply of spares. Stunning campsite Chris with the river backdrop and a nifty canyon area. Looking forward to Part 2 mate. Bushyboy Oz.

Those mantles break if you bump the lamp. I still have one of those lamps and a pack of spare mantles.

Great memories of the Coleman Stove and Coleman Lantern. I grew up in the same era, we camped out in Yosemite and the Sierras. Thanks again Chris.

HAAA! I have a Coleman lantern & stove! Leftover from my old camping days, but great when the power goes off in the winter! I was the one who just had to touch the canvas tent during a rain! My now ex said, "what did you do??" Luckily the sleep bags dried out the next day. We did dirt bikes in the White mtns of eastern AZ!💖
