I'm so excited for your reaction to the next episode, "Jeremy Bearimy". One of the best in the series, in my opinion.

Ben Lawson blew that role away. He was always ridiculous and comical.

This is where it sort of starts to slot into place that the meta of this show is about the sitcom creation process. In the afterlife, where all of life’s inconveniences are gone, Michael (same name as the show’s creator) contrived artificial situations to cause entertaining stress to our main cast, stress which ends up forging their relationships. At first he kept rebooting the concept because he wanted painful, silly antics, not growth or development. Now, on Earth, having discovered that these things are far more satisfying to cultivate, Michael is sweeping away all of those little inconveniences like rent and wages, things sitcoms largely ignore, to allow the plots to progress without interrupting the flow of our characters’ growth.

Overall, I think Simone is a brilliant character. She gets a lot of hate because she upsets the existing and beloved relationships/paradigms that we, as viewers, hold dear. But that response misses the role that she plays. Once again, the writers of this show are mocking the standard tropes that we are all familiar with. In this case, Simone plays the role of the intelligent viewer. All the other characters let the plot train roll right on through to its destination. Simone hits the breaks and makes observations that we share, but none of the other characters are allowed to catch.

I love how thoughtfully you engage with show. It rewards that kind of reflection, as you've obviously seen, so your working through the various issues they confront increases your enjoyment--and of course ours. Part of the genius of the show is that it truly meets people where they're at: it can certainly be watched on a surface level for pure entertainment, but can also be grappled with on a much deeper level as you're doing. It's so rich for what is deceptively presented as merely a creative spin on the workplace sitcom.

i think my one of my problems with the “people are either innately good or they aren’t” argument is that you can then say the same thing about people being innately bad. in both cases you’re removing someone’s autonomy from them. if you’re just innately good then all the good things you’ve worked hard to do (because it is often so so hard to do the good thing) mean less, because you’re just a “good person” rather than a person that does good things. the same with “bad people.” when i say i don’t like to call hitler (very extreme example i understand) a bad person people will usually get understandably weary (unless they know me and know i’m about to go on an annoyingly long winded philosophical rant) but it’s because it’s removing his ability to have *not* done the horrific things he did from the equation. he very easily could have not killed 6 million jewish people. he decided to. he wasn’t innately evil - he _decided_ to do evil things again and again and again. people have autonomy. unless there are extenuating circumstances, we are entirely responsible for what we do and good or bad we deserve credit for it. *(i understand this is a pretty heavy comment, if you want me to remove it or add any cw/tw’s let me know)*

To be fair, whilst i agree that there isn't innately good or bad people, i just agree on it because absolutes tend to be stupid, but people do have innate tendencies. In your Hitler example, he decided to kill 6 million Jewish people, could you? if you really wanted it could you? i personally can say i wouldn't be able to, even given the tools and even if i "wanted too" just for shits and giggles, i would be extremely difficult for me to take such actions. Same with being good, some people are born with certain inclinations to what we consider good, once i was with a friend, we passed a homeless, and i had just bought a lot of orange soda, the man asked if we can spare a little (he had a little cup) i filled him up and move on with my day, my friend later told me that was nice of me, i really couldn't understand why, i wasn't that thirsty, he said he was, it just seemed the logic step to give him to drink, it wasn't even a conscious decision, or something i had to think about or even tough it was a "good action", but for my friend it was something that required consideration, so, innate inclinations to certain actions do play a big factor. We are born with tendencies, of course by our own free will we get to lean or distance from said tendencies, but the difficulty for one path or another does matter and it's even enhanced by our upbringing. We are responsible for the end result 100%, but let's not ignore that the conditions are absolutely different from each individual even before they are born. Hell, i have never touched a cigarette, me and a lot of people in my family have tendency for addictions ( currently i am addicted to technology, truly addict, not in the boomer "this kids can't let up their phones" kind of way, i mean full withdrawal symptoms by just letting go a little) and whilst i have the free will and autonomy that COULD mean i won't be loss to it, i know it is way easier for me to lean into it than other people

Omg I've never been so early to your videos before (probably because it's like 2am for me right now 😂), but I just wanted to say that I've been loving your reactions to The Good Place. You are so thoughtful and insightful, and I like that you aren't afraid to explore different avenues of thought, it's always interesting to see what you think of certain lessons or plot points the story is pushing us towards. And that says a lot, because I generally can't sit through long commentaries haha but I don't mind with your videos (I also just love TGP hahah). Regardless, I cannot wait for you to react to the rest of the show! Also side note: it's hilarious that you are so insightful but also apparently the most similar to Jason hahaha, he's great tho so :)

Right, - but we value the actors and get flustered about meeting them because we feel like we know them (we know them parasocially) - whereas world famous surgeons are actually not famous, except to other surgeons, so we don't feel nervous about meeting them because they are strangers to us who we have no investment in. It's not really "humans bad" there, more that the unnatural community of films and distant communication messes with our feelings about social importance. I guess the thing that is bad in the situation is that money and status gets involved in the ways that famous people can earn more because of the way fame is monetised in our societies. Okay, and then I just had a great time with Michael inventing "Nathanial Cookswell, the famous chef" - that name is just perfect.

Thoughts on media. Some creative endeavors are simply extended bits or explorations of ideas. Nothing wrong with that it can be great but it exists as it is. Some media is important and run the rampant from obtuse to acute. Anything on this can be good depending on how it’s written. But the obtuse is wrong in a way that removes it from art and puts it in something else. Nothing wrong with it just saying. Then you have the quest that all artists pursue. They want a 4th 5th and 6th wall breaking piece that can be summed up by a very cleaver triple entendre, by its creator. Is it understood by everyone… doesn’t matter it exist and reverberates. Examples in separate categories. Scream. Mulhuland drive. Bruno. Tale of the west Memphis three. I’m sure someone smarter than me can articulate this. But just putting it out there.
