I just listened to your Cold reaction before this and left some recommendations there, but I also wanted to mention a couple more. He did an impromptu James Brown cover of It's a Man's World that was so great. It's another example of how this man can not fit into the box of just one genre. He is his own genre. Also, his live C2C in London 2016 for Whiskey and You is another favorite. Finally, his live solo version of Barely Alive is uhhhmazing. It sounds a little amateur at first because someone took the video without great sound quality, but once he starts, that all melts away and all you hear is Chris being Chris. He wrote a lot of the songs he sings, along with hundreds of songs for other big artists. Barely Alive was written and performed while he was in the band Jompson Brothers. He was also in the bluegrass band called Steeldrivers. Anything he sang with them is really good stuff. But that is much more bluegrass/country for sure. Enjoy the journey! He's a great artist and I can't wait to see what you react to next. Hint: it should be I Was Wrong Live at Austin City Limits. 😆 Thank you again for the reaction! Have a great day!

Ahh, you probably won't even read this but that high thing you're talking about him doing with his voice is called a falsetto. The growl in his voice by vocal coaches is referred to as a vocal fry, or vocal distortion. Chris has damn fine control over his vocal chords, and he can apply any of those techniques at will. He can be in his chest with a clear tone, or put some fry on it or move back and forth between his chest and his falsetto, like it's nothing. He's making conscience choices on when to do it, to build the song, and covey the emotion of the song. In the chorus he does three repeats of 'sometimes I cry', and each time, he ups the ante. It's almost a display of different ways one can cry.

During the years he was only writing for others, he had side hustles singing with The Steeldrivers (Bluegrass) & The Jompson Brothers (rock). Find those. They're great. He's young & he has his glasses on in those videos. It always makes me think that he looks like he just escaped from those biomedical engineering classes at Duke. Yep, he started college to become an engineer. Aren't you glad he didn't?

There are so many CS songs that are amazing, even his covers/tributes like It's A Man's Man's World and Nothing Compares To You. Just incredible, this man can't do anything bad.
