Half a lifetime ago I got my license to drive a truck. No, I didn’t become a good truck driver. But it made me a way better road user: always consider the trucks ahead, behind or aside you. Give them space!

And I would add. If you catch up to a truck and can pass, pass and continue on at the speed you were going. Trucks don't like long lines of cars behind them any more than you like being in them.

Using a blinker would help the car driver. Its a 2 way thing, not just car drivers are horrible. You need to show what you want. He should of put his blinker to the left ahead of time, then drive 75%on the left lane with his blinker to the richt. In that case everyone would know what he wants to do. I dont say everyone is waiting and yes you still have ideots that will try to get pass you. But you have to do what is in your power to be clear to others. Sometimes take some more space then you need, but definitely dont hate on ppl that dont k ow what you want. Like i said, the road is a 2 way street, not just 1.
@BartonHans Жыл бұрын
@@larsmeijerink5471 Sadly, the majority of drivers on the road, do not know the rule you just made up and will not pass. Driving off to the side of the road is not legal and if the truck driver does that, it leaves him open to a ticket. It's not my job to 'clear the way' for people to pass. It is my job to maintain my speed and not delibetratly obstruct traffic. Those 'idiots' who try and get by me. I let by me and they are gone. I really do not care what others think or want when it comes to my driving. All I worry about is driving the one vehicle I am driving. And compensating for traffic around me. I don't agitate and I don't give driving lessons from the cab of my truck. If a person doesn't pass. Fine. In my state, there are pull over lanes for vehicles with more than 5 cars behind them. I use them when possible. One thing for sure, I am not getting my pants in a wad over the line of cars behind me. 80 to 100 thousand pounds of truck don't behave like cars and we all just want to be left alone. Sure there are irresponsible truck drivers, if you are around one, let them win and move on. They are not worth the trouble. I was only saying I prefer people to pass when they can safely pass.

Casey, I’ve been driving over the road for over 18 years and I’d like to share a few food hacks I’ve learned. These work once you realize that your engine is also an oven. 1) Foil Packs, Hamburger, Small roasts, Baked Potatoes! 2) Wrap a Pot Pie in Heavy Duty foil and let your engine heat do the rest! 3) Dessert- Use a metal cup and mix up a little muffin mix, cover it with foil and place it on top of your engine. I’ve used these cooking methods a lot over the years because I get tired of fast food , plus my cab smells great while cooking. Good Luck!

You could pretty easily have one of your undermount tool boxes as a camp kitchen. A propane stove, some utensils, plates and cups, pour over coffee funnel and filters, a box of staples, -even a 12V mini fridge. Put it on a platform with locking drawer glides so it slides out while you're using it. Add a folding chair and a pop up shelter like the soccer moms use, and you're set!

But that puts him out into the weather, not much fun when it snows outside. Also, he would be working or sitting next to his truck, which is where usually other trucks or vehicles park and pass by and lastly, in tow trucks undermount tool box space is at a premium for gear that needs to be on board and I doubt that he will turn one of those boxes into a camping box for use 4 or 5 times a year while he needs the box for tools a lot more often.

Patience is something that is in short supply these days with drivers. I try to give trucks and any other large vehicles extra space. My dad always allowed time for stopping and changing a tire on any trip he took. That pretty much meant that we were always about half an hour early. But we were never late. It also means that you can be generous with your time on the road which makes your trip a lot more pleasant. In cases where I'm short on time I don't sweat it. Because I know that chances are about even that I'll still be early because everyone else is running late.

I see people zip in and around traffic and block them, so I'm sure I've made a few cars mad when I will stop in the center of the roadway to allow the truck and trailer units the chance to pull out! I figure the 5 seconds I have to wait makes their day a little bit better, and I know I've been in the same exact situation with my RV and trailer behind me and have had to wait close to 20 minutes to be able to move.

I enjoyed this trip, albeit vicariously. Back in the summer of 1990, I had to go to a job interview in Bend and was coming from Tacoma, so drove down I-5 to I think either Eugene or Salem before cutting across the mountains, I want to say, part of that trip was taking 20, or 22 across and went through the Mt Hood national forest before cutting SE to Sisters, then to Bend. Did it in my old '78 Ford Fairmont, however, the transmission was leaking and every time I had to stop due to road construction, fluid would drip down onto the hot exhaust. I had no AC in that car (it was a base 4 door sedan). Made it and coming home, I drove up 97 to the Dalles before cutting back towards Portland, hitting Gresham along the way and I recall thinking I'd love to explore eastern Oregon someday. That was over 30 years ago and have not had the opportunity to do so and at the moment, still too broke to do so. The job was at a TV station in Bend. I want to say, it was KTOY or something like that. In Sept, I had an interview at another station, this time in Klamath Falls and took my Dad's Chevy Citation as it had working AC as I was going to be going through the Rogue Valley and they were forecasting a heatwave in the valley - hence the AC as my car didn't have it. Anyway, I think I went back the same way I came, though I could have just gone up 97 through Bend. Anyway, his car developed a leak in the transmission and I was able to stop and had the guy look at it, got it topped off and I got home alright, letting my Dad know to have the leak looked at. Fun times. The LAST time I drove through your state was in the summer of 1995, drove to Medford for a job, not once, but twice, the first time for the interview, the second was moving to Medford. Then in 2002, drove through the entire state on my way to Culver City CA, of course, down the 5 freeway and through the Grapevine into LA, at times doing close to 90 in a loaded up 88 Honda Accord sedan at times through central CA.

I know he probably doesn't hit to many drive thru's but a good Chic-fi-A freshly made sandwich with a nice Peach Tea is worth the premium price. Or better yet, pack a cooler with a homemade sandwich and some kind of side with a big drink container of your favorite non adult beverage. When I was in the Air Force, I didn't have much of a choice being a Dorm Rat, and worked on the flight Line, but there was a Roach Coach that came around with some decent food prepared daily that would stop down by where they officers building was. The Driver would sound the horn when he would drive by the MAC Ramp and we would jump in our work vehicle and drive the 1/4 mile to meet the food truck. Much better food options than the flight Kitchen.

Half a lifetime or more ago, I worked as a parts-changer (okay, mechanic) for U-Haul, when the pride of the fleet was a 1972 F-600 with a 24' box (4' of which was over the cab), 359 HD V-8, four-speed manual transmission with the handbrake on the rear of the transmission. One of the trucks I was assigned needed a different rear axle for some reason (this was 1986, so I don't remember that detail). We had the truck up on a pneumatic jack (your truck reminded me of how that jack did its thing), rolled the bad axle out (having left tires on it), and rolled the replacement axle (swiped from a parts truck) into place, and started to lower the jack. The jack was apparently in a bit of a bind at first, and when it dropped, the truck dropped what seemed like two feet all at once. I wasn't in any real danger--the springs would have landed on the axle had it gotten that far down--but it was a bit unnerving. Yeah, I was under the truck--my job was to align the springs on the axles so the U-bolts would hold the axle in place properly. I don't miss that job...

Hi Casey. Great video. You put your audience behind your steering wheel while you give a masterful commentary. You are teaching us (those of us with a working brain) the special needs of truckers. Especially the long trucks that must pull into another lane to make a turn. What should we look out for? I wonder if you could include some time in a video to explain about trucker’s chains and how to recognize the weight grades and when to replace them. That would be like a PSA. Miss the 4K. Please bring it back.

A tip for the future. Bring some freeze dried or smoked items to eat. Grocery stores usually have some smoked meat sticks as well. Just get the package of cheese and meat next time. :D

I agree. Screw 'em. I found when I was driving truck that everyone's time was more valuable than mine. Even though I was working on limited time to do my job. I appreciate your videos as you tell it like it is out in the real world. The public are mostly all self-absorbed and could care less about others. Thank you for being real. We need more like you.

Hey Casey, when you're going PDX to 22, check the time on taking 205 to 213 south through Silverton, and jump on 22 at Stayton, compared to I5. It's a lot more windy country roads and has some slower spots going through towns, but if I5 has any traffic at all, it can be faster. Even if the time is the same 213 vs I5, 213 is a much nicer drive.

I second that, I grew up in Silverton but live an hour south of there now. Still like taking that road to Portland when I HAVE to go there.

Experience is a great teacher. Drove an emergency ladder fire truck with platform 6' extending ahead of cab. Really needed a wide berth for right hand turns. Fortunately, I had the advantage of turning on all emergency lights to get other driver's attention then commanded the lanes. One driver attempted to pass on the right. Not good for her and the hurry she was in. So now I always give truckers space and I'll stop for them to pull in or out.... makes wife nuts!😮

It's tough "making a hole"......... And then everyone gets to tell you that your a #1 driver (with their finger).
@bewitchedmunster Жыл бұрын
Even driving a personal truck sometimes you just Gotta make your own hole in traffic because many people in cars are ignorant to the fact that a bigger vehicle takes longer to stop. They’re also ignorant of the fast that just cuz we’re bigger than they are it doesn’t make us slow. They also don’t realize that even though they may get down the road a bit faster that I can catch them & probably be able to stuff that lil crackerjack car theyre into the bed on my truck & continue on down the road! Besides, when they break down a wreck, who are they gonna call??? somebody with a big truck!!! You just keep on doing what you’re doing Casey!

Ah, the crushed red cinder for icy roads. Many may not know what that is so,I’ll explain just a little. Oregon has a LOT of lava flows and red cider sources are pretty common and it’s far cheaper than using salt on the roads which also would have drastic effects on our water systems both natural and man made then it would eventually impact our agriculture producers which is very active on the Oregon High Desert. And we just don’t have a lot of salt sources so the cost of shipping it would be steep. I imagine Portland may use salt now and then but not sure, never lived there. Another good thing is our vehicle undercarriages hold up a lot better since the climate is so arid so if you buy a vehicle that spent its life on the High Desert, you can bet that it’s almost rust free.

Driving the same style truck but as a two ton flatbed W-Stinger. At first I thought why didn't put it on top and then I realized the height limit. Yes, people don't want to let you over because they don't want to be behind a big truck. It's easier when you are only 24ft long and not having anything on the stinger, you just turn on the blinker and start coming over acting like you aren't going to stop for nuthin. Of course, you will cease and desist at the last second if they don't yield but most of the time they do yield to the intimidation.

Casey, all Utubers ask us to check the thumbs up on the video. I think most viewers are like me and view in the horizontal screen which has no way to click the thumbs up or any other input. You have to be in the vertical set up to do that. When viewing the video, and it ends you can not change back to vertical from horizontal quick enough to do anything. That may be one reason you have more views but not enough ”likes”

Driver courtesy goes both ways. I always try to allow truckers in. They used to flash their lights saying thanks but rarely anymore. I have seen them drive more aggressively as well. Then the idiot cars that do not want to give an inch, cut you off then brake...

Nothing harder than trying to eat healthy on the road. I used to drive a lot with my old job and finding decent food was always a struggle. It's a lot of work driving trucks that big and sadly most people are so self absorbed these days that they can't imagine stopping to let a truck make a turn like that. Stay safe out there.

It’s cool to see a channel going though places I’m familiar with as a local. Traveled all over Oregon and done a little towing myself from Bend to Oregon City. A car on a trailer, towed by an 01 Silverado 2500HD. It was an experience for my first time towing anything. Then I did a trip down to Redding from Canby, OR for a failed car trade (long story short, guy didn’t know what he was looking at) so I brought it all the way back. Really seems easy compared to what you just managed!

If you were on Sunnyside Road (By the Clackamas Town Center) back when I grew up, Sunnyside was a two lane road heading out to the country, as the information sign stated at 82nd & Sunnyside headed East.....Boring/Cemetery's. You tying down the sterring wheel brings up great memories when i spent my summers staying with my uncle in steamboat sprigs colorado in the 80's and went with him on all the recoveries. He towed a school bus and it had alot of play in the steering box and the bus was dog legging into the oncoming lane by about a foot. He had to turn into oncoming lane after the oncommig cars passed him to swerve the bus that was part way over the lane.

More (bigger) flashing lights could be the answer to morons who won't let long trucks/trailers pull over in time. Sandwiches are always yucky at the end of the day as they're already yesterday's before they even start. Maybe a nearby MacDonald's or similar would be less disappointing?

Reminds me of something that happned to a firiend of mine. He was towing a disabled vehicle on a straight pole. A car allowed him to change lane , then promptly hit the towed vehicle. 'The explination was I was willing to let you in, but not the one behind pushing in as well'.

As a new truck driver, I honestly think that a lot of the time, it's more that they don't understand than them not caring. You really don't know and appreciate just how much space and time large vehicles need and where they need it until you start driving them.
