hi sorry for the late reply, You have to use your thumb to slap 6th string(just no need to be hard, just need to add some beats) while the middle and ring fingers do downward strumming, not picking the string. Hope I am able to answer your enquiriy

How do you slap/play the X’s? I can never figure out the way to play and smack at the same time

Hold your right hand over the strings in classical rest position. Raise your thumb out slightly. Rotate your wrist to slap the strings. Do this a couple times to get the feeling of keeping the slap on 2 and 4. Then, swing your closed hand open at the same time you rotate the hand. The swinging fingers create the strum, while the rotating wrist creates the slap. There's no elbow movement involved. You return to the classical rest position. I think the technique is called "nail attack" but anyone just set the KZbin playback speed to 25% and study Kenneth's hands to learn fingerstyle technique. That's why he uses this camera angle.
