I thought the main character in this movie was called Tim not Ted.

OH FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY. You're right. 😳 I said the movie made my brain short circuit! 😀 Good catch. I wish there was a way you could re-upload youtube videos to fix them.

3:56 I'd argue it's between Carrey and John Leguizamo. The wide array of different expressions that Johnny Legz can contort his face into even earned him the nickname "the Latin Lon Chaney" in the 90s with mind-blowingly surreal turns in Julie Newmar, Romeo + Juliet and Spawn, but you see him in stuff like The Happening or Vanishing on 7th Street and he can definitely do subtle and underplayed. If there's ANY actor I think could have played Stanley Ipkiss outside Carrey, it would be Leguizamo, and I'd argue he gives him a very tough run for his money as a talented physical comedian.

This movie is basically every crappy kid comedy of the 2000's, like Cat in The Hat and Baby Geniuses. It also doesn't help that there are a crap ton of awkward transitions, dodgy CGI (even at the time), and creepy close up shots.

Also is it just me or does this movie not look like a movie from 2005 this looks like a movie from 1996 or 1997

Here’s the difference between Loki from the marvel comics (Owned by Disney) and this Loki from the mask series of the dark horse comics (Owned by New line cinema) you see as some of you guys don’t know that the marvel original version of Loki before being introduced into the MCU has been created my marvel since 1962 while this unrelated version of him from son of the mask isn’t the same guy meaning “These the two different Loki’s but NOT the same person with the same namesake “.

This is my guilty pleasure movie. I’ve begun to love it over time only because of how bizarre it is. I met the lead actor once too and he’s a really cool guy.

For a long time, I wondered what this film's deal was, but I could never sit through it. Thanks for giving this thorough review and analysis! One thing though: your definition of magical realism is a bit off, since you're basically saying it's any fantasy that doesn't turn into total cartoonish whimsy. In magical realism, characters (and the world in general) treat a magical thing in a very gritty, down-to-earth way--like in The Satanic Verses where one character turns into a devil-like creature, and he suffers police brutality since he's seen as a freak who's outside the law. Harry Potter is escapist fantasy; it isn't about ordinary schmoes dealing with the practical, ugly, everyday consequences of magic spells. That said, thanks again for the in-depth vid! It's refreshing to find a KZbin review on this movie that isn't a generic "waaacky youtuber," so that's much appreciated!

The movie would have been way better if the main character Tim would have been Stanley's son and he would be a kid instead of an adult who finds The Mask and goes through everything his father went through.

Also the mask to is loosely based off the comics with the the name the mask character and having a kid have the powers of the mask those are the only connections between this movie and the comics it’s kind of like the Rambo sequels were the first Rambo movie first blood is based off The book first blood from 1972 and the first movie is a decent enough adaptation of the first book but all the other sequels only have 1 or 2 characters from the books does the kernel and Rambo that’s about it all the other sequels are their own thing and have no connection to the book because well there was no Rambo book sequel because just like how the movie was originallySupposed to end Rambo dies but they change that because the audiences loved ramble so that’s the reason why there are sequels to the movie but no sequel to the book because the book has Rambo die so yeah no opportunities to do a sequel to the book

Yes because it’s overrated the mask is better than son of the mask
