This is one of my favorite parts of this series, although historians say Libby would not have chased after her husband like that. She was famous for her strength.

Anyone ever read what the Native Americans thought of Custer? Or the number of Native Americans he was expected to meet? If I'm not mistaken there were only supposed to be 750 to 1000 "hostiles" there not the numbers he met, maybe Grants hatred for Custer had something to do with Custers failure, just something to think about

Custer was very well respected by the plains Indians. They recognized his almost maniacal bravery in war. Yeah...I've thought for years that Custer was set up. I think Benteen and Reno were told to stand down when Custer invariably attacked the village. Had they come to his aid I believe they would have repelled Gall's counter.

These Indians were Arikara, traditional enemies of the Lakota Sioux. They fought alongside Custer because they felt the Sioux were a bigger threat to their tribe than were the whites. Looking back it seems absurd but it was certainly the case. The Sioux had many enemies. They were hard on the Arikara, Pawnee, Hidatsa, etc.

@AlternityGM The Indians were doing the exact same to each other before the Whites ever set foot on NA. You act as if it is only the Whites fault.

@maccermacnab Different eras define how people are interpreted. Custer's duty to his country and ambition overshadowed his personal feelings. He was very ambitious so I've read. Wanted to be President.

The Arikara and Pawnee were terrible enemies of the Sioux. The Sioux had been harsh, nearly genocidal, against them for a century and a half. In addition, in 1876, we are only speaking of three bands of Lakota who remained "hostile", Minneconjou, Hunkpapa, and Ogalala. The rest were on the agencies.

yes they did fight but they did not break any promise to other tribes. when something was done that was it.

oh yeah sorry that is right. the whites did trade with them and only attacked hostile tribes while trading with friendlier tribes. then later on tribes of all nations had their own reasons of attacking and so did the later americans.
