They actually change Benteen's words here to make it sound more controversial. What he actually said was, "If I'm to be of any service to him, I can't wait for the packs." And he didn't. He returned at a somewhat leisurely pace, but he had no reason to believe Custer was in any danger at that time and he was probably concerned about preserving his horses which had already been ridden though the night, knowing he might be going into a fight.

Must have been a grizzly sight for those who were the first to arrive on the scene after the battle.

The Indians dismounted, took cover, and just lobbed arrows into the remaining troopers on LSH. They weren't attacking mounted on horses. Only after their arrows had thinned-out Custer's command, and their fire began to slack, did they rush in to finish them off.

There's a REALLY good multi-part "documentary" by a guy here named, "CusterApollo". He details each phase of the Little Big Horn fight. I was not aware that many of the troopers lost their horses early on in the (relatively short) fighting, due to surprise attacks - even a suicide charge by young warriors at Cemetery Ridge. Many had to escape - if they did escape - on foot, before their ultimate demise on Last Stand Hill. So, seeing all of the 7th on horseback until the very end is historically incorrect.

Benteen actually saved his men, the PACKs and the survivors of Reno... if he had tried to help Custer, the defeat would have been complete. They would all have been massacred...
