Sonal Mansingh is a renowned Indian classical dancer, and Guru Bharatanatyam and Odissi are dancing styles. Over the years, this veteran dancer has practised many dance forms including Manipuri dance and Kuchipudi. She started her professional dance career in the early 1960s and has been around for almost six decades. As her ghongroos immaculately moved to the beat, she decided to approach various other things. Sonal Mansingh was trained in HindustanI and Carnatic classical vocal music and was proficient in the Sanskrit and German languages. For her contributions towards promoting ‘Classical dances’, she has received the Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987.
She was the youngest recipient of Padma Bhushan in 1992. In 2003, Sonal became the first Indian woman dancer to three-decades Padma Vibhushan. She has been nominated by the President of India, to become a member of Parli, Rajya Sabha.
To mark the completion of her 40 years in dancing in 2002, noted Hindi film director, Prakash Jha made a documentary film on her, title Sonal, which also won the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film for the year.
