For the record Western society (especially the America) is built on the notion/ideology of endless greed and selfishness, give & take (just like a business deal/transaction), a place where kids move out of their parent's home after turning 18 to earn and live life for their own selves (on his/her own terms & conditions), rather than compromising or sacrificing their wishes/dreams for the sake of their elders or loved ones, and that's one of the reasons why marriages and family system doesn't last longer & forever in western countries, and why those nations have such a high divorce rate.

Here's an ironic reality. You see people walking their dogs and when their dog poops, they bend down and pick up the poop with gloves and dispose of it with a serene and calm look about their faces; I've never see anyone scrunch up their nose or contort their features in disgust. YET....if an elderly PARENT does not have control over their bowel movements due to a medical reason....the thought of helping them or changing their diaper produces a reaction of strong disgust and they prefer to hand that responsibility over to the staff of a.....nursing home. Yep, the same parents that changed your diapers and cleaned up your shit and vomit when you were a child....and people have more patience for their dog's filth than they do for the very parents that raised them. That's something to reflect/ponder upon before looking down upon other cultures where there is a more closer equation with the parents. So......GOOD on AISHWARYA RAI for giving that response to Letterman's condescending question; it certainly took him by surprise.

She is absolutely right and the answer is wonderful. I have practical experience in this issue. When I was studying in soviet university and my course mate was a German and a good friend. Once he invited me to Germany during the summer holidays. After a few days of roaming in the city, he planned to go to his parents in the village. He called up and fixed the date. Before leaving the village at the lunch table, he put some money in and i noticed. On the way to the town, I asked him about that money. He is in a simple manner and very cool and answered that he paid for our food. Bcoz they live in retirement and what we had is over their budget. I was shocked and never asked anything on this subject after we even returned back to university. After 40 years,still I am, Finding difficulties to understand his attitude towards his parents. 😢

That's sheer understanding. He did not wish to burden his parents. There r the pros a d cons of every culture. Indian children exploit their parents to a great extend with their dependency and demands😂
@balandr2544 Жыл бұрын
@@littleflwr1007 it's not exploitation and nothing do with culture. It's pure love and humanism. we are not sending our parents to elders house. Taking care of them at our house. The elders are like babies at their old age. And they need the attention of their children. But whereas in Europe they feel lonely and carry stress till their death. So, parents, children's, grands in one place is heaven.

@@balandr2544 why do so many keep talking about taking care of your parents as if the elderly are invalids. Most of them aren’t and can take care of themselves. Unless your parents are physically or mentally disable you don’t need to live with your parents to “take care of them”. They’re adults, they’ll be fine. Visiting them now and then and checking in on them occasionally is enough.

To reply his rudeness like that is also rude. Nobody has to make appoint like the way she ridicules that. Adult children have their own household and parents finally are free to do what they want, so to catch parents home at moments they are not travelling or enjoying time outside of course, naturally there need to be communicated when parents have time. These parents have a life bedsides their grown children, in contrary of Indian culture. So assuming that an adult living an adult life apart from parents, have to make appointment for dinner shows how little respect she has for people who grow up and flew the nest as it is supposed to be. She is right, in that culture adults loose dependency, stops being obedient like a toddler, choose their own partner, decides themselves when to do it and when they have a child. Basically she defends the cruel patriarchal system. If even this kind if seemingly free women defends that bc she values her pride for her country more then the doormat position the culture and traditions puts women there …

It is also common that we don't consider English as a known language because many of us know it. I guess it's the only good thing about British colonialization.

Very TRUE. Me too. Took care of both my parents to the best of my ability. Though had to get in home nurses to handle them during tough times. My health started to give up. Couldn't do all myself single-handedly. 😢 Being an only child can sometimes be bane especially when parents are the old Gen who refuse home nurse help and get nasty on them. Still tried ....🥺
