You covered a lot of good info in this vid..... Using your fish finder is a good tool to put you on crappie and utilizing a map card to help locate contours helps a lot also..... You're putting a lot into this 30 day challenge and I know it's a lot of work.... Thanks for the shout outs.....

Crappie in the south here in Va, more shallow as the water cools. Winter water temps average 38-48 , hardly ever freeze over,. Had 1 week last year with just the coves had 1/2'' of ice. Crappie will hold in 8=15 feet of water over 16-25 feet of water in channels swings , turns and over brush piles.

My Humminbird 999 SI, does not have that little measurement of how wide the black cone angle is. Now I understand that that cone is probably wider than a 2D cone, also understand the your unit is not reading accurately in 4.5 shallow water all the time. That being said, after watching countless videos over that last few years, I was under the impression that that black cone was representing the depth as part of the total side imaging width. For example if you are in 50 feet of water and have your SI set up to see 100 feet out each side. Then the first 50 feet is actually the black area under the boat, and you are really only seeing 50 feet out each side after the black area. Of course I am probably wrong, as I get things mixed up sometimes. I never use 800 on my unit just the 455 as when I try to use the 800 it makes the screen bright and I have to readjust everything and it ends up looking pretty much like the 455 image. Why were you getting double readings on the depth?

sometimes when trolling over hard lake bottom (sand, rock), your sonar will give a double reading

If you want the Garmin settings, go to Benjamin Nowaks channel, he covers Garmin in depth (pardon the pun), there higher end units. Although the same basic settings for the echomap series.
