yeah I get the vibe, especially in the middle bit but honestly I thought of it more as an intense area theme, like the bit where the area music doesn't stop playing when you enter a battle sorta vibe edit: actually, yknow, listening back, it absolutely does have that vibe like, all over it, in like the instruments and everything and I'm surprised I didn't catch it myself

This is super impressive and I’m not gonna pretend to be anywhere near as good of a composer as this, but a couple of suggestions: 1. Look at using musescore. I know 8-bit sound fonts are your thing, but I’ve used both beepbox and musescore and the latter was so much more user friendly and just let me do more things. 2. Instead of each bar being 6 measures of 4/4, make it 8 bars of 3/4. The strong beat occurs on every 3rd note in the piece, but the way you’ve subdivided it makes that hard to see when looking at it. 3. Don’t be afraid to change keys. There are quite a few bits, especially in the opening, that seem like they’d resolve better into a 5th than the tonic. Again, musescore makes it way easier to change keys, but even just implying more subdominant or dominant chords within the key will give a greater sense of melodic progression. Seriously though, great work and I cant wait to see the end result

I actually have tried using musescore, and while it is more capable than beepbox, I don't have a whole lot of experience with engraving programs, and the piano roll format is generally easier for me to compose in just because of the fluidity of it and not having to mess around with too many symbols and lines etc. (I also don't really have too much music theory knowledge). Usually for me the thing at the top of my list of importance is the ability to efficiently spew my thoughts onto a canvas over capability, the only sticking points being that key changes are a little wack in beepbox, and that you can't change time signatures. Were I to make a full orchestral arrangement or something of the like I would probably go to musescore, but for straight composing, the learning curve is a little too high for me to be able to manage. The thing I really like about beepbox over other music software is that all of the instruments are synthesized (FM synthesis I think?), and while some sounds end up sounding kind of unavoidably awful (the percussion in particular), you can make some really crazy sounds. I particularly like one of the instruments on the top row, I've used it in a bunch of songs because it makes these confusing alien sound effects. On top of that, I love the feeling of sculpting every aspect of a piece that you get from making the instruments, and that's something that's hard to find in more traditional music software. I probably should use key changes more often in songs I write, It never really comes to mind, but it could probably add some variation.

@radiotomatosauce99
@radiotomatosauce99 Жыл бұрын
you gotta fine tune the instruments to sound smoother because a lot of the default instruments are too small and crunchy (or press shift+r a bunch of times or turn up the reverb) but mostly you just gotta have a bunch of instruments to fill out all the octaves so there's no big empty spaces, that makes it sound wider, then do some panning. use the synth kick instrument in a low octave on top of the percussion

Just curious, but what instruments did you use for the song?
@radiotomatosauce99
@radiotomatosauce99 Жыл бұрын
It's a variety of synth instruments that I crafted or modified so they don't exactly correspond to real instruments, but I can give you a rough estimate. the top instrument is mostly nonsense noise that I don't understand but sounds cool (this one actually doesn't sound the same depending on the speakers you are using for whatever reason, it sounds bad when exported as a WAV file but sounds normal exported as MP3. this doesn't happen with any of the other instruments to my knowledge), the second instrument is a xylophone/vibraphone/music box sort of sound, the third instrument is a synth kick drum sound, the fourth instrument is an odd bitcrushed+distorted+reverb guitar sound, the fifth instrument is a distorted guitar+brass bass sound, the sixth instrument is most comparable to a saxophone (it's a brass lead of some variety), the seventh instrument is a bitcrushed rock organ, the eighth instrument is a bunch of weird choir sounds piled on top of each other, and the remaining two instruments are percussion. You can always check the link to the song (it runs in browser) and mess with the instruments yourself :)

Seriously like i aspire to be as cool as someone like this, i make little songs in my head and think up games for them but then i never have the time or skill to make it with instruments instead of brain noises 🙃😰 like i literally thought of a song that soundd so banger i recorded it for once but the microphone made it sound so bad )::: how do i be as cool as you friend
@radiotomatosauce99
@radiotomatosauce99 Жыл бұрын
@@DeXyfero yknow I've been trying to think of a way to answer this question for a while, but it's not easy. a few "tips" that come to mind are 1. if you wanna do something well, keep doing it badly a lot. you might never think you've made something good if you compare yourself to people you look up to, but your frame of reference for "bad" will shift upwards over time and even if you still think you are bad at it you'll be not insignificantly better than you from like, a year ago. 2. for me, it helps to "algorithmize" what cool/funny/whatever means to me and kind of make a metaphorical formula for it and just keep adding "variables" whenever there's another aspect I can think of that applies. it helps to pay close attention to what it is about the people you like that is cool might only apply to my brain, though. 3. don't feel bad about using any sort of tool/instrument/program or whatever so long as it helps you achieve the sound/look/vibe you're trying to get. you shouldn't bother with anything super expensive if you don't think it will help you that much, always make sure that what you currently have at your disposal is not enough when considering getting more take what I say with a grain of salt, though. I think i've only been "cool" for like, less than a year edit: don't worry too much about the pronouns! really anything goes as far as I'm concerned but most people tend to use he/him pronouns for me. I suppose I'd rather be a legend than a man or a woman, though.
