Hey, I saw your comment on FAIRY TALE just now. Thanks for watching and commenting here, too. Yes, this book is pretty scary in parts. There are some creepy and truly shocking scenes in here. The story is compelling and it gets to the point of "can't-put-it-down" towards the end. Recommended.

Yeah, it's a creepy read, alright, and indeed, very well written. I also loved his Hyperion / Endimyion quartet, but wasn't too impressed with "Ilium" and he lost me with "Olympos". I'll have to check out his other horror outings.

I need to check out "The Terror," a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin's lost expedition, on HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, to the Arctic. I've been told it's excellent.

I couldn't get into book at all, too many horrid descriptions of the Ghettos of Calcutta, really odd book. Good reviews!😀

I understand. It's a dark and at times hopeless book. It paints a scary picture of Calcutta back then.

Nice review never read anything by Simmons, but the thinskinned ones who like to complain, would naturally find his description of a semi-fictional Calcutta racist. I would think that a megacity like Calcutta would have a plethora of horrors to offer... I'd recommend the Foundation trilogy (or quadrology) by Asimov if you haven't read it G. Had to meet a japanese the other day and thought of the teahouse and the catchphrasy opening (and after a brief consultation on the internet) asked her: O genki desu (u isn't pronounced) ka? Well, she was quite genki.

The main character & his family's experiences in Calcutta are so horrific and devastating that he is made to hate the place. Those thin-skinned reviewers who love to object all over social media can't seem to separate an author from their characters. They also don't seem to understand what "fiction" is. But anyway. I've only read the first book in the Foundation series. Glad to hear you were using Japanese. The "O" before "genki desu ka" is very respectful. It is used as an honorific.
