Townes Van Zandt is a singer songwriter who influenced a lot of the Americana/alt country artists

"Townes van zandt is the greatest American song writer, and I would stand on bob dylan's coffee table in my shit-covered cowboy boots and still say that" -steve earle Both names said in this comment are tremendous country singers in their own right. Dive in.

If you wanna explore more alt-country stuff I'd recommend you give silver jews a go. The natural Bridge is one of my favourite albums ever

I just didn’t get busted. Love that line. And all his lyrics. Love the vulnerability in his voice.

highly recommend reacting to this whole album if you really wanna “get” good country

Its all about the story telling and feel the instrumental takes over a simple progression coming from a guitar player who's gone through a huge alt county phase i suggest Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as a great introduction to what the genre can do. Very interesting production

I’d recommend the rest of this album as well as Sun Kil Moon’s Ghosts of the Great Highway. It’s a nice mix of folk/alt country with hints of shoegaze/90’s alt

Speaking of good alt-country or roots, try Wilco's Being There.

I was hoping you'd get around to them (The Magnolia Electric Co. ) at some point. There's a song of theirs I love called "Astrabel" but it's not on an album, just live versions here and there. But it was recorded by Steve Albini during the Josephine sessions, their last record. They play the song on the making-of documentary of the album and it sounds great. I hope it's released some day.

That entire album is fantastic...but the first song off of that (titled Farewell Transmission) is arguably his best song. In addition, I would NOT label Jason Molina (or most of his solo work, work with Songs:Ohia or Magnolia Electric Company) as Country. He played everything from punk, Alt-Country, Rock, Blues, and soundscapes. He wrote hundreds of songs, and many of them are truly great and truly unique.

I recommend The Handsome Family (but that Jason Molina song won't be bettered). Weightless Again is a very good song.

You should consider listening to some Gillian Welch. Alt-Country/Americana and excellent songwriting.

I never considered Jason Molina country for some reason. I just like what he does. I would have said that I don't like any country. Some of the electric songs can sound like the best Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Thanks for listening.
