Religion is just a reference, remember this is multi layered. You’ve been looking at it through the lenses of psychology, why stop now? Crucifying the ego is a recurring theme in Tools music. To learn to point a finger at yourself instead of the rest of the world, and kill the martyr within.

One thing I find fascinating is that Maynard has said that the instrumentals are done first and then he lays down the lyrics after. It's so interesting how Maynard will manipulate words, by increasing the syllables or mumbling a word to make it flow with or just under the instramentals. Maynard will stretch a word into another bar and it changes the entire way the song sounds.

The way you analyze the songs so deep. Even if you "kind of" heard a song before. Giving it a good hard listen is way different. As you already know. ...I am thinking this is about being wary of false prophets. Some people want to connect to someone that can show them the way...they have the answers. Kinda hints to the loud evangelists that yell and shout with their truths. This ideal weaves through several Tool songs...Reverend Maynard and the flock of sheep followers first comes to mind. Wonderful job. ☆

When you listen to Jimmy, a couple of things to consider. First, Maynard James Keenan is Jimmy. Second, eleven is the age when his mother had her stroke... Also, he was born and raised in Ohio before moving to Michigan, so the line "Under a dead Ohio sky" is a personal, not random thing.. Anyone from Ohio, myself included, knows what a dead Ohio sky looks and feels like....

Like most Tool songs, there's going to be an overarching theme that's used or implied by either the title or specific lyrics that evoke it, but that function as something of a guide-rail to a deeper-but-related concept. Like Sober being about *more* than "an addiction song", and "Stinkfist" using the sexual act of fisting to allude to feelings of emptiness vs pursuit of fulfillment, character building and relationships through hardship, etc. Tool will often use an on-the-nose title supplemented with certain evocative lines in the song to bring you a few steps into a series of more broad concepts that relate to the various human conditions and experiences. Some personal, some general, some scathing, some tender.

From the man himself, in an interview between Carrie Borzillo and Maynard James Keenan dated December 1996: *Who is "Eulogy" about? My guesses are Jesus Christ, Paul D'Amour (Tool's ex-bassist), or Kurt Cobain.* "There are no songs on the album about Paul. People might think that, but it's not the case." *Is it about Kurt Cobain? I wouldn't think you'd be a fan of his.* "I appreciate what he did. I'm not really happy with his professional widow. The song's about tendencies, NOT about a specific individual. It's about tendencies of people wanting to stand on a soap box and sacrifice themselves in some way. We don't need that process anymore. You're on your own now."

Could be as simple as reflecting on your own past self. Could be the psychological Ego that is there to protect you, to speak for you. If you say I want to be a better person then you are saying "I want this flawed version to die and get replaced." So if you were to improve, then look back on things , it would be a perspective of "you claimed all this time that you would die for me, so why then are you so surprised to hear your own eulogy." The line about not all martyrs finding divinity could be about how our past self died for the next version and that's amazing but it doesn't make this past version 'good'. It also is that the next version is just another step on the path. To ascend you must die, you must be crucified. So it's killing your current incarnation (metaphorically) and then becoming a newer more perfect but imperfect version that will have it's turn to be the 'next fool martyr'

For me I see the first obvious reference is to Jesus, however this to me is just a metaphor. And deferring it to the simplistic view of religion does no justice. In fact the song could be referenced to many individuals who have died for a cause, the Martyrs past, present and future, religious, philosophical and/or political. The statement for me of this song is dont due for me or anyone else. We are all people. You are not my redeemer. I and I alone am my own redeemer and you are yours. Dont soap box your view as if it had something to with me and my way. Now that 6our dead I follow someone above ground. Myself. The song doe me is about living to become what you believe instead of dying to wash away the sins of the Masses. Focus on the development of self actualization. I always keep on mind Tool has at the very least a Thelemic inspiration at its core.

Even though this album was dedicated to Bill Hicks, this song in particular was actually about L. Ron Hubbard. The band have openly discussed this multiple times about it being about him in interviews. Maynard even referred to this song being a way for people to make their own decisions instead of people's tendencies to stand on a soap box and sacrifice themselves in some way. Don't follow the 'cult' leader per se, but make your own choices and be your own person.

@@timlarosa In the song where he says we'll miss him, and we wish you well, isn't being said as truly good wishes, it's being said sarcastically. Think of it as someone saying it like, yeah...we'll miss him alright, but actually meaning, I could care less to see him again, good riddance. That's why he says, you had a lot of nothing to say, like I care at all. It was just a bunch of lies and you didn't know or believe in what you were saying, yet you wanted me to do all these things for you still? So you claimed you'd die for me, yet you lied and didn't mean it at all, it was just words you spoke from atop your perch that had no backing, so don't be surprised when you hear your own eulogy, since you claimed you'd die for me. In essence, when those words turned to action, and things went wrong, well...you should have seen it coming.

Noooo it's Jesus! Or, or organized religion! No, it's definitely about SJWs and gladhand celebrity! Nuh uh, it's about Waco, TX! Nooooo it's totally about __________". For once, I wish people would write an "explanation" comment that affords the reader and channel/host the opportunity to make their own interpretation and connection - which, by my estimation, is probably how the band would prefer their songs be felt. All these dorkass Tool fans bumbling over each other to bludgeon a first time listener with a bunch of overwhelming "info" about the song. Just shut the fuck up and let people peel the onion themselves at their own pace. If you HAVE TO COMMENT, at least keep it broad and loose. Tool is to be used on the journey, not explicitly defined.
