Tool Army Here,( H ) is not about drugs it is about the birth of Maynard's son and his fear of passing on the cycle of abuse. He is trying to be a better person/father by not allowing the past to not color the Man/Father he wants to be. The snake is the past. I think you would like TOOL (Parabol/Parabola) this is another beautiful song.

I love your reactions. You're a very analytical and intelligent person, I can tell. I can offer a little insight as to what the general consensus is on the meaning of H., if you will. H. is the middle name (not initial, but actual name) of Maynard James Keenan's (singer) son and lyrically the song revolves around Maynard's emotions about becoming a father. The great thing about how he writes this song, though, is how it can be open to any meaningful interpretation. As for Forty Six & Two, you pretty much hit the nail on the head regarding it's meaning and usage of Jungian psychology. I'm going to sub to you two and I look forward to some more Tool reactions. Cheers!

@PowderedToastMan4204 жыл бұрын
This could have been titled "H" because Maynard's son Devo has the middle name of H (not an initial - that's the whole middle name). He talks of how his son and his wife have no hate but he wants to lash out at them because he has been abused. He speaks of how he refuses to give into these temptations. One of the deepest songs ever written.

You are right to keep your perspective open on song meanings because Maynard is a masterful lyricist, second to none. He is very much known for his dry sarcasm within songs, as well as many songs meaning more then one thing loaded with double and even triple entendres. He doesn't like to describe the meaning to most songs because he expects the listener to attempt to dissect it. Also, one more note, it is widely known that 46 and 2 is a reference to dna, we currently have 44 autosomes and 2 sex chromosone, or 44 and 2, where as aboriginal people had 42 and 2 as well as current day monkeys. So its believed that 46 and 2 is in reference to us as humans evolving into a being with 46 and 2 that sees the human race as one, instead of an individual as one. Lastly, Wings of Marie is a masterpiece where you can tell Maynard puts his heart and soul out there (get ready to shed a tear) but it is important that if you do Wings of Marie then the next song 10,000 days is a must because its a 2 part song so you really should listen to them back to back. Best I can describe it is, 'a letter you feel you should not be reading, however, the author wants you to and in the end you feel honored and humbled for the privilege for being allowed to'. If you want the back story, for this, it's about Maynards mom Judith Marie having whats believed to be an aneurysm and becoming paraplegic when Maynard was 11 years old and her being devout Christian that Maynard is trying to come to terms with, and he puts that out there on the song Jimmy (his name is James Maynard Keenan and jimmy is a reference to himself as a kid). So it wouldn't be a bad idea to listen to that one as well. He also does a song in reference to his mother called Judith with his side project band Perfect Circle, it's a good song but doesn't do a whole lot for the back story, as Jimmy really gives you a pretty clear picture if you know what you are listening to.

For those not familiar with listening to vinyl records, at the end of the album, the stylius is stuck in the last groove cut into the vinyl and "bumps" into the uncut vinyl, making the sound you hear ... you have to get up, go to the turntable and lift the stylius arm, flip the record and start the other side of the album. Think of not having a remote control for the television. The title of this song reminds me of when the side of an album was over, we would tell someone to"make yourself useful and flip the album" Hence, an useful idiot!

If you have the opportunity go see Tool live and you’ll be left utterly amazed and thankful that you did. Over time try to listen to each album and you can clearly hear how the band has evolved from album to album. Tool is a grower and show-er so you get the best of both worlds. The more you listen to them the more they’ll grow on you and their shows will seriously blow your mind. The production is insane and seems like every time I see them live it keeps getting bigger and bigger. Tool is in their own league and there is really no band like them. Do some research on them and youll respect them even more because there is some really cool history. As far as another song, I think Right In Two is a song you’d probably like. I feel that H is about the transition into Parenthood. The snake being the old habits and the friends that don't want you to change and want you to keep partying. The snake turning his piss to wine would be people encouraging your bad behaviors. The new life/child making him change, to drop his barriers and become connected, effectively killing who he was. This is one of Tool's most amazing songs, and really sums up the entire theme of Aenima. This song is about growing, changing, and moving towards the next level of human evolution and conciousness. It's deeply rooted in Jungian theory. Basically, it's believed that there are three levels of human evolution and each has it's form of conciousness. There's the 1st level with 44 chromosones. These are primitve people's like the aboriginies in Australia who do not percieve anything outside of themselves. They only see one large conciousness with no distinguishment between organisms. Then there's the second level with 46 chromosones. That is us. We are a chaotic disharmonic conciousness that is basically used as a stepping stone between the first and third levels. The third level is 48 chromosones. (Or 46 & 2, with 2 being the sex chromosones x & y). This is the higher level of conciousness. Our destination. But this is where the Jungian theory comes in. It is believed that you can not reach this third level of evolution without first delving into yourself and basically cleansing your conciousness for the next jump. That's where the Shadow comes in. The shadow is basically everything about that is unseen that you are uncomfortable with or hate. This is also known as the Anima (hence the name of the CD). The last part of the song sums all of this up... "See my shadow changing, Stretching up and over me Soften this old armor Hoping I can clear the way By stepping through my shadow, Coming out the other side Step into the shadow Forty six and two are just ahead of me"

Yeah, you might be ready for Lateralus after experiencing 46 & 2. Also, Right in Two, The Pot, The Grudge, Jambi, and Schism. I think, once you get a nice feel for early Tool, you can move on to Fear Inoculum. You can really see their musical acumen and spiritual influence grow between albums, with Latertalus, for me being the peak of the band's greatness. You see them go more spiritual after with 10000 days and FI. Still, not a bad album or song in the entire catalog.
