Just make sure you pay attention to the sprite of the enemy. There's a very low chance that you'll encounter a Christmas Island crab (all red with a smooth shell, no spikes), and if you attack it you'll get the "Harmed Endangered Wildlife" debuff which makes any guards attack you on sight.
