In today’s lesson I’ll teach you how to play Into the Mystic, the Van Morrison classic from his third studio album Moondance (1970). I’ll teach you the chord shapes, strumming patterns, and various licks & fills you can use to spice things up throughout the song. Technically, the Csus2 chord is a C add9 chord. Whenever there is a sus chord, sus2 or sus4, the 3rd of the chord (all 3rds) are suspended (not played) and the 2nd or 4th is played in place of the 3rd. On this C chord, the high E (3rd) is still being played when the open D (which can be called a 2nd or a 9th) is on string 4. Could be called a C add2 but it's most always called C add9.

I did tackle this song recently in lesson #506 - but that was mainly looking at the rhythm. This lesson fills in the rest of the gaps - which lots of folks were requesting. But you're right - definitely a lot of overlap! The song sheet is also brand new.

There's really no good reason to not teach the fill on the E minor by incorporating it into the strumming, ie playing just the E-F#-G on the high E string with the little finger while holding and strumming the Em. The same applies to the horn fill, on the C (just keep the strumming going lightly across open strings), and also the melody over the G straight afterwards, it fits easily on the G and B strings, and into the Em fill again. It adds so much to what is an easy 4(ish) chord song and is a skill everyone should be aware of and practice.
