HoMM3 still the King. I appreciate a lot in this game but it has nowhere near the replay value as Heroes 3
@DragoonBoom5 ай бұрын
Gonna be honest, once you learn how to build around essence and how to build your heroes (theres a hidden fixed passive tree, look it up), it blows homm3 out of the water. I mean it doesn't, the two do their own things really well side by side but there's mechanical depth and complexity where there just isn't in homm3.

I'm so exciiiiiited! I absolutely loved HOMM3 (I'm an old head) and nothing has quite replicated it as close as what this game seems to do, I did see some complaints about a few things but to me they somewhat look like potential improvements. Anyway, very excited, can't wait.

Nice review. I also feel that this game needs more creatures, especially neutral ones scattered across the map. Spells also feel not powerful enough but I am only dozen hours into game so I do not yet understand the magic system. Anyway, town development and unit distribution in the army slots are very smart and well thought (there are no such thing as placing thousand and thousands of units in one slot, way smarter thing than HoMM's unit distributing).

This ... feels like the true ovation to heroes 3 .... + the sprinkles and curves that ads itself to the gameplay rezolve many of HEROES 3 problems ... like the 1 HERO ( MAJOR ARMY PROBLEM) + the essence system give such a great choice on the battlefield for supplying your spells with power by choice of attack ... and ofcourse the city building and outpost system feels so great. The story and art ... are another strong point. This is what we needed .... i thank the small team at LAVA POTION for this .. andi repeat i like the fact that they fixed the 1 ONE MAJOR HERO PROBLEM.

Things that i don't like compared to HoMM3(complete): -Buildings/Buildingspaces, I like the HoMM3 Version much more. The Buildingspaces just look not "natural". HoMM Cities were just much more cinematic. -Limited Armybuilding. I'm not a fan of the limited stacks of each Unit. In the end, it feels like strong units spam is much stronger while in HoMM3 you had just massive low tier Stacks, which also works. -In my opinion, 4 Factions are not enough. Neutral: -Artstyle, I really can't fall in love with it. I'm just not a fan of Pixelart. Maps look still good, but not the Units/"Heroes" Positiv: -Magic System, It feels nice to generate "Mana"(Essence) with Units. Still hope there will be more Spells and i also agree that some of them are just boring. Still positiv for me. -Works on Steam Deck (And yes, I know you can also make HoMM3 work on Steam deck) :) -Significantly better accessibility Overall I like it. Didn't play the campaigns much so can't say anything about it. That also includes HoMM3 campaign, I always played random maps :)

i've been playing a lot lately, i thought the same of the magic system, and i still agree specially on offensive spells, they do close to no damage, but the buffs are gamechangers, specially stacking defensive one, you can make a weak lvl 1 unit tank everything with a couple of buffs, sure you still need to generate a lot of essence,
@DragoonBoom5 ай бұрын
Offensive spells absolutely do work, you just need to build around it. It's about building the right team composition so you can cast your offensive spell every 1-2 turns, then stacking spell damage bonuses. Stuff like magic level/damage skills and the innate bonuses that some heroes have is key to utilising it well. Add equipment that boosts your spell damage on top of that and you'll be unstoppable... so long as the enemy team doesn't have any heroes with magic resist. If you rush it with the right wielders, you can absolutely break the game by defeating enemies far larger than your army. Buffs and unit-based skills require your army to be strong; damage spells only require single unit stacks to generate essence.

Heroes 3 had underground world, outside of the "normal" world on maps. Do you think the lack of this feature hurts Songs of Conquest gameplay?
@DragoonBoom5 ай бұрын
I'd say the underground world is one of those things that made homm3 clunky and annoying to play, alongside boats. I'm glad it's gone tbh but others may feel differently.
@Choooobo5 ай бұрын
@@DragoonBoom I agree with boats - annoying as hell, they should have been revamped by fans. Yet, I partialy disagree with your underground statement, based of experience in HoMM 3 & 5 and Age of Wonders. Underworld expands the map further and give "z" parameter to "xy" game. You need more strategy, because you need to stay alert due to fog of war in a region close to you that you haven't got time to explore... yet. Outside of campaign, most maps uses this mechanic badly, and the feeling is mostly clunky and annoying. But, in this game, you don't have main hero but main heroes. You could defend few different side of your region. I think that would be somewhat interesting.

"We need more creatures, because it will enchanse the game's balance" Even a little bit more creatures cause tons of new balance issues (graph theory), this is why to top competitive games, like chess and StarCraft have the least amount of different units.

The pixel art is too pixelated imo but each to his own
@OrangeNash5 ай бұрын
Yep. Got it because it does look pretty. But found the chunky pixellation makes the map difficult to scan and hard to play. Check out a screen shot of HOMM2 or even HOMM1 next to SOC and you see the older games are far less pixelated and make the map so much easier to read. I suspect a fair few people will buy it, attracted to the art style, then give it up after just a few hours and go back ot HOMM 1 - 4 as they all have far more content and are more playable. And 2- 4 look as good, better IMHO.

Why didn't they buff spells? I've been hearing problems about them 2 years ago. That's what early access is for.

I bought this in early access but hardly played it due to the lack of a Wait feature in combat punishing units with high initiative and the wonky Magic system didn't allow spell use until later rounds in combat (at least in early game).

I dont understand why people are so excited about this pixelart style. To me, it just looks like a game from the last century. Why not make pretty graphics like in Age of Wonders 3? Is it much harder to do or is it a deliberate choice to make it look old and pixellated?
@DragoonBoom5 ай бұрын
Man you couldn't be more wrong about spells lacking impact, it's likely you haven't figured out how to utilise them yet... SO the way you use spells properly is to create a team composition that maximises the gain of one or two essences while levelling up the hero skills for them. That way you get to consistently cast the spells of those colours every turn, multiple times per turn if they're cheap enough (this is the big difference between homm3 and SoC, multiple spell casts per turn). If you know what you're doing, you can absolutely break the game in half or hard counter otherwise strong compositions.
