For years I've ridden on this line Across the country side I've always been well treated Though I took the hobo's ride And when my days are over And the curtains round me fall Please ship me off to heaven On the Wabash Cannon Ball!

Now hear the engine's whistle It's a mighty lonesome call As we ride the bars on the empty cars of the Wabash Cannon Ball. From the waves of the Atlantic To the wild Pacific Shore From the Coast of California To snowbound Labrador There's a train of fancy layout That's well known to us all It's the hobo's home when he wants to roam It's the Wabash Cannon Ball.

Johnny cash and Boxcar Willie have a version of this song, but this version is the best! That whistling at the end reminds me of Sittin on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding. Old music like this is better than most of the modern day garbage! I love the OLDIES!!!!

Now listen to her rumble Now listen to her roar As she echoes down the valley And flies along the shore Now hear the engine's whistle It's a mighty lonesome call As we ride the bars on the empty cars of the Wabash Cannon Ball There's lots of places partner that you can go to see. St. Paul and Kansas City Des Moines and Kankakee The lakes of Minnehaha Where the laughin' waters fall You reach them by no other Than the Wabash Cannon Ball.

I grew up listening to this LP, first on an old Victrola console then on a "new" 1958 Zenith Cobramatic Hi Fi. The transition from "low fi" to Hi-fi is the most dramatic change in music I've ever heard. Stereo, Quadraphonic, Digital? Some better than other steps but hearing this song in high fi for the first time was quite a rush. (As well as the other best songs from Merrill Jay singers on this album: Wreck of the Old 97 and Casey Jones.) There are no 'bad' songs but those 3 stand out. and always will.

Well, finally, here are the lyrics I learned of one verse and the chorus - almost. I learned the verse as: From the waves of the Atlantic to the wild Pacific shore From the coast of Califor-ni-ay to snowbound Labrador From the lakes of Minnehaha where the laughing waters fall You can reach them by no other than the Wabash Cannonball. Was very surprised to hear that most artists recorded an entirely different set of lyrics, though the chorus was very close to this one.
