This is the sound of tears. Anyone who was in the room when Jer poured his soul into a lick was touched deeply and the love still lingers. Know matter who plays those tunes there is the love. Don't find yourself judging. Just close your eyes and remember and be glad you were there. So dust off those dusty strings , one more time.

Truly magnificent and magical. Their use of space and John's melodicism is truly heavenly. You can also see how much they are enjoying playing one of Garcia's most beautiful ballads and the passion coming across. Wonderful!

Something strange about reading a Dead tune live onstage. I've heard Scofield live with MMW, he wasn't reading then. This quite restrained for Medeski, who I've heard many times, and even jammed with. He sounds great. I must say I'm a bit dissapointed in Sco here. I've heard him play much better ( I've even discussed gear with him) . If he knew the song, not just reading the melody which starts off fine, but the words and sense of it,I think he'd find more to say .

The way Medeski plays the I-bVII-IV section in terms of rhythm and accents reminds me a lot of the I-bVII-IV-bVII section in Running on Faith by Eric Clapton. random thought

Nick Landess I feel as though the (spot on) jazzy tone doesn't quite suit this song. The small, quirky (also 'spot on') noodles, although they do sound great, don't quite fit. The tones emitted sounded like Pink Floyd's Shine On at times and Oh Christmas Tree at other intervals. I'm not saying it isn't a 'good' or 'nice' rendition. I love some of Medeski, Martin and Woods' stuff, especially with John Scofield sitting in, but in my opinion this cut just wasn't fitting to the standard I have accumulated after seeing quite a few Grateful Dead tributes and seeing them live as The Dead feat. John Mayer.
@NickLandess6 жыл бұрын
I'm fine with it not being your thing - but you are at least acknowledging that your judgment(s) are subjective - you are critiquing, respectfully. There's a big difference between that and disliking.
@terrapin63525 жыл бұрын
@Talkin Bout Nawlins I agree. I listened to John Mayer's music once upon a time, long ago in times that are extremely fuzzy now. He has some talent, but he was a bad choice as a guitarist for possibly the last official continuation we see of The Grateful Dead. I understand the rumor that Weir wanted to hand it off to a younger generation, and John sees it as an honor to play with them. But, he's not going to do anything with his experience playing with them. He's still off writing love songs and being a record label puppet. There are SO MANY other great guitarists of past and newer generations that would leap at such an opportunity and truly continue the legacy. Unfortunately, I see (or saw?) it as Weir making it a popularity contest. Attracting some of John's current fanbase, which is similar imo to Britney Spears (not far off in fanbase similarity! Maybe a single gen or less.). Quite sad, but... whatcha gonna do? lol

First off , what does being terrible at life supposed to mean? Life is suffering , then you die . Don't take me the wrong way , I am a huge Sco fan ! I was a Jerry fan too. However , this cover of Stella Blue is weak at best. It is subjective and doesn't improve the original . Despite having Sco on guitar , it fails both Jerry and Sco's actual talents as musicians ! It sounds to me , to be more of a parody of what was , a beautiful melody! I don't dislike it , but I don't really care for it very much either !

I love it when folks cover jerry b/c it reinforces his enigmatic genius. nobody can play with the soul, mastery, and majesty of Garcia. this is alright but it seems like they didn't rehearse to the point of playing it with authority.

Roodi Mentaer I just saw Scofield with Jimmie Herring last month. Awesome music, but the snare drum was rattling away in the background the whole time. Even during the bass solo. You'd think that the drummer would at least mute it. For people that are such tone freaks they don't seem to notice it.

I get your point...sometimes. I think Sco treats this pretty respectfully using space and holding back a lot of the killer stuff he could throw in that would be a bit much. No question jazz interpretations often overdo things, but at the same time I find it worthwhile to try to embrace aspects of the language and aesthetic before applying criticism. I'm trying to word this in a way that I am speaking for myself and not suggesting any limitations on the part of the original commenter.
