I have listened to many varied kinds of music over the decades. I haven't heard You Oughta Know in a long time, but remember how much I liked the raw power of the lyrics the first time I heard it. I remember it as though I'd just heard it yesterday. Put the lyrics together with the musicianship, and she has a solid tune that will always be in my memory.

I miss the days of things not being so perfect. Music is emotion and if you take and make it perfect, we lose those amazing performances. The days that we would record without a click. Choruses would speed up and vocalists that would be completely emotional as they sang. Listening to the soloed vocal of Alanis, was unbelievable, it gave me the chills. Thanks for this vid. Warren!

Being from Ottawa, I was one of many people who met Alanis over the years. She was always a ridiculously nice person. My room mates and I were all invited to her first CD release party well before she hit the big time. I’m still amazed by how far she managed to go.

By 1996, Alanis was all over the TV and radio, and I was getting a bit tired of her, so I was less than thrilled when my Mum bought Jagged Little Pill. I came home a bit stoned one day and Mum was playing it. I just stopped and went 'whoa!' Like I say, I'd heard her songs on the TV and radio, but Mum had these HUGE speakers and this song was blasting out. It sounded insane! I actually sat down and listened to the whole damn album with her and loved it. Still do. My personal favourite has to be Head Over Feet, but this is a killer track. And Right Through You could have easily been a single.

I remember when my mom bought this on cd back in the day... I had never heard anything quite like it. I have always been more of a metalhead, but I have a lot of respect for this record. It sort of seemed to come out of nowhere and instantly took over the airwaves. Lots of intense, pointed emotion on the record... It's raw, but at the same time is tempered with wisdom and intent, and "You Oughta Know" wasn't the only great song off of the record. It sort of sits with albums like Soundgarden's Superunknown where I almost forget it's not a greatest hits album, it just featured a lot of bangers. Truly an era-defining release.

I had a friend back in the days, who was a classical piano player. He grew up with classical music, and that's basically all he knew. But when he heard the "jagged little pill" for the first time, it was such a revelation to him, he became a huge Alanis fan. He ended up giving out the CD to all of his friends, because it had such an impact on him :) Compare that to anything that was released in the last 10 years or so. I doubt there was a single song that could have had a similar impact on people. Ah, the good ole' times, where music was not primarily a means to becoming rich, but a means for self expression :) I feel genuinely sorry for those Gen Y/Z kids, who have to grow up listening to crap music. The music you listen to during your adolescence is the music that has the biggest impact on you. We were lucky enough to get socialised with some of the best music that has even been created. Todays kids get socialised with total crap. No wonder they can't come up with anything of musical relevance, as they simply don't know any better...

Many people don’t know that: but Alanis lived here in Germany for a while. Her father has to serve the Canadian airforce, which was stationed here in my hometown “Lahr”. We were a bit proud that such a big international Rockstar was raised in our streets. Rumour has it, that Alanis is still visiting her Nany from time to time. In 1995 I was only 5 years old. Didn’t know anything about music. But still remember when “you oughta know” came on the radio, I just loved it. Years later, when I did go to music college, I actually played that song at a exsam, because of the funky Basslines of Flea.

One of my old-time favourites. The song and, specially, the amazing Alanis. I had the pleasure to see her live sometime in the second half of the 1990's, in Faro, Portugal. It started pouring down as she kicked off and the roadies had to scramble to get plastic covers for the amps and other gear. Wind blowing in gusts. Quite the storm, for our standards at least, as we hardly ever get one around here. But she didn't stop. She was soaking wet after the second song, well the whole band were, yet they just kept going for another hour and a half, like they owned the universe. Relentless. Demolishing. Unbelievable. And so gracious at the same time.

Ok you just totally ripped me open when you played her isolated voice. I just broke down in tears hearing that for all the reasons you said. It's raw and powerful but smart and beautiful at the same time. I have been a major fan since I first heard You Oughta Know when I was 24 years old. I always gravitate toward female voices, but no one has ever sung or written the way she does. Combined with unmatched instrumentation, the effect is unparalleled.

Only a handful of albums have sold a million copies in Australia (and two of those are Abba compilations by the way) but 'Jagged Little Pill' is one of the very few. That album was everywhere back in the mid-90's and the CD would appear in op-shops (thrift/good will stores) years later completely knackered -- you never found one in good condition, they'd all been played to death. It truly was a phenomenon. Those isolated vocals were spine-chilling. Stellar video once again Warren. For anyone who's interested, the biggest selling record in Australian history is 'Bat Out of Hell' by Meat Loaf.

I was 22-23 when "You Oughta Know" was released. I had heard anger and angst in Nirvana, Pearl Jam and those bands. Men were allowed to be angry. It was a selling point. Mainstream music did not allow women to be assertive and angry. Alanis was shocking for the raw punch and emotion she showed in her delivery and lyrics. I mean 10 seconds in and I was hooked as a young man. Alanis was PISSED and could make a good point. Kurt Cobain had hooked into my disillusionment. Alanis did that for many of the young women I knew. It was brash and empowering for them.

I had worked with Glen as an engineer for 5 years on various projects in the 80s. One thing you can count on with Glen as a producer is he has a talent for knowing when the take and energy is right. He always said to me, "we never make demos!" Why redo it? You can't get the 1st take energy twice. Massive respect for my pal Glen and this record, it's so him wanting the artist to be spontaneous.🤘Thanks for what you do Warren!

My copy of the album has the original version of song as well wich does not feature Flea and Dave yet. That version is missing a lot of the groove of the final version. They REALLY helped to bring the song to a higher level and make it this impactful first single that it was. Those old live shows with Tayler on drums were just great as well. The whole band had so much power and expression. Alanis' music seemed to be so raw, fragile and honest. Loved it. Still do.

Great video, thanks Warren! This song stopped everyone in their tracks . . . it gave female singer/songwriters a licence to get tough and really speak their minds and be themselves. I was working with several at the time and it affected them all deeply. The other thing that had a real influence was the loop-based production - pretty soon everyone who came into my studio wanted those loopy grooves and I did a bunch of projects in that style over the next few years. Fun times!

One of my favourite records of all time. Her performance of Hand in my Pocket at the Brit awards in ‘95 with Taylor on drums blew my mind as a 14 year old just starting out as a song writer. While my mates spent the mid 90’s discussing which Spice Girl they liked best I couldn’t see past Alanis! The best gig I’ve ever been to as a paying punter was Alanis at Manchester Apollo in the early 2000s. I’ve also had the privilege of working on a couple of Alanis’ tours over the years and she’s brilliant and absolutely lovely. Thanks for this vid Warren!

The very first time I'd heard this song was as the opener to a free compilation CD from a Rolling Stone magazine in '95, and I loved it right away. Not long after, there was a very energetic live show on the TV, and yes her rhythm section at that time were Taylor Hawkins (dr) and Chris Chaney (b), and this blast of energy totally blew me away! 🤩 Christmas was just around the corner, so I asked my family to please get me 'Jagged Little Pill' as a present; After I did get it from my Mum and listened to it for the first time, I was actually terribly underwhelmed, because the songs sounded so 'tame', compared to the live show I'd watched! 😅 Thank you for the video! Great to hear the isolated tracks and thus things I'd never noticed before! 😊👍

I had an ADAT based studio in Atlanta in the 90s (5 ADATS and the BRC). Back then there was always the analog vs. digital debate. When this album came out, I used it as a part of the studio demo .. it got us a lot of work and calmed the fear of ADATs and digital recording.

In my 55 years of life, I've listened to thousands of thousands of songs and have bought many records/CDs. In all of those records I bought and listened to over and over. I had only bought one CD that had a woman as the feature lead performer. That CD was Alanis Morissette. It was my main CD for many many months. I had the honor of introducing it to my kids a few months ago. They as well love it. To catch fire twice as she did is a hard task. So I only have that one CD. But man it's up there with many of the great ones for me. Thank you for this one. And man it would be great if you could do one of her songs for the academy to mix 🤓

The thing that kills me about Flea's bass part: he does a lot of these sort of 4 beat fills between the main bass line, and I swear no two of them are exactly the same. I don't know how he comes up with so many variations...And it stays super funky...

I was noticing exactly the same on this listen. That section Warren used, each time 'round flea seems to outdo himself, which has my ears pulling me off the edge of my seat. I think someone told Flea that this is the trick. It's how jazz works, and often classical music. Play the fifth. Then the fifth of fifth, then the flatted seventh, then the thirteenth, and then back to root and end. A voyage all told, and why music theory remains crucial to those beginning. Heard a popular EDM composer exclaiming "NO RULES!" while pasting loops from Output - and as a 1979 punk, who learned that way originally, now it seems instead for young musicians to realize a little bit about the why and how that music works. Favorite quote applicable here is "Learn all your chops, and THEN just let it wail."

Aw man this is my fave song from that album, I remember buying it when I was a young teenager from my local record shop with my own money. It gave me goosebumps as this was the opening track and then the full album start to finish is just a masterpiece. I played it to death and it inspired me to write music with that kind of attitude. There is not much that I can add except that I still have Little Jagged Pill on CD and it gets played in full every now and then, along with the wonderful Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. I've been lucky (through work) to listen to a lot of multitracks in my time but so thank full that you were able to share You Oughta Know in this video. I had no idea what so ever that Flea was on bass and that what he played was just so damn funky. Fantastic video Warren, thank you so much.

Superb A&R spot by Madonna's label and Guy Oseary. Talk about a blockbuster... nobody else would touch it apart from Maverick. And boy oh boy did that pay off. Thats the first time as well that I'd heard that vocal isolated. Jeeeeeeeeeeeezus, thats a powerful performance. What a way to open an album. I remember the first time I listened to the album all the way through on a coach trip from Newcastle to London for a band rehearsal.. I put it on a walkman, cranked it up and thought .."woah.....what the hell was THAT.....?"

Yet another great video. Thanks. It’s amazing how breathy vocals can add attitude to a performance as proven here. I could also just listen to the backing tracks alone as they sound so good. Yes back in 1995 all we listened to was this album and Soundgardens Superunknown from the previous year.
