I didn't realize how great he was until after his death unfortunately. I'm not a huge Stones fan, although I am a fan. Then I saw Rick Beato's posthumous break down of Charlie's playing, & heard his stems for the first time, & I don't think you could have described his playing any better. "A machine w/feel" is the perfect analogy.
@neovxr3 жыл бұрын
thanks for your loving words on charlie. sadly, he was kind of underrated in many scenes, because it was not too difficult to play his patterns. still it was difficult to sound really like him. it took a certain feeling and mindset, not forget the rehearsing of some jazz also. your drummer fellow, certainly a great professional (he may forgive me that me amateur do not know him), sure did not sound like charlie. I can't define what it is. yeah I love these old stories so much.

One of the greatest drummers of all time. Any blues, soul, r&b band would kill for a groove like that. He sits right in the pocket and locks down the bass without overpowering anything. Not to mention his personal style. Always looked smooth and un-phased by anything. His focus was holding it down with feel and class.

The stones are my favorite band of all time and I thought my favorite member was Keith because his guitar playing really only served the song and when I listen to them (and this is my opinion) I don't hear any self indulgence in his playing-- it's all about the groove. I thought Keith was my favorite stone until Charlie passed away and I started to watch interviews of Charlie, he might just be the only person that cared about the music just as much or more than Keith (rather than the fame)... I love the Charlie interview where he is sitting on his hands because "his wife told him not to touch his face during the interview". What a uniquely genuine soul that conveys itself beautifully in their music.

The original idea for that title came when, during a long haul flight, Bill was reading the novel "Get Out Of My Sky". Keith in particular loved the loved of the book and seeing that they were on a plane way up high, decided to reconfigure that phrase to "Get Off of my Cloud". Of course Mick being the brattish mouthy one tacked on the "Hey you, hey you" chant to the phrase.

Nice coverage of an icon of a song. In so many Stones songs, Charlie seemed to rush the kick drum ever so slightly and lay in the back of the pocket for the snare. It swung like a jazz drummer for sure. Would you consider doing a review on some early R.E.M. material? It seems like you were listening to a lot of the euro based alternative/college bands back in the 1980's. R.E.M. was so powerfully influential in the states at bringing back guitar and drum music without endless synths or the visuals that helped bands like Culture Club or Cyndi Lauper get noticed. Thanks

What's really great is we have brand new songs that have been recorded already for a new album yet to be released, played by Charlie Watts before he died. That will be a treat for sure, and it will feel as if he's still with us too. The only hold up on the new album, being Mick Jagger's timing for release. The Rolling Stones have already taken too long between new releases, using fillers from older recordings instead, constantly bumping up the price point. What are you waiting for Mick, Keith to pop off as well?

@raymyhill2 well I agree with u even when the stones went on after Brian Jones was fired and got Mick Taylor they still made great albums but they were never quite the same and even with Ron Wood still a great band but they evolved different well I couldn’t see The stones going on even when Bill Wyman left then they became like a very different band all together being backed up with Jagger and Richards no Bill no Charlie no Rolling Stones in my honest opinion the whole band ended once Wyman left the whole band should have stopped a long long time ago after steel wheels when Bill left in 1993 tattoo you was the stones last best album

Did Ian Stewart later change his name to Jay Leno? Quite the doppelganger there. Great video as ever.
