From its inception in the early seventies, Queen was known for its ability to transform itself and bring together diverse and eclectic soundworlds. From glam rock to soul, rhythm and blues to opera - nothing seemed off limits. In 1980, they proved that again, combining the hottest sounds of disco with their signature classic rock sound, they created a track that would captivate generation of musicians and listeners alike -- “Another One Bites the Dust”
The album was released on June 30, 1980, and “Another One Bites the Dust” followed as a single on August 22 that same year. The sound of the song was a drastic departure for them. The band credits Michael Jackson for encouraging them to release it as a single. Mercury explained: “John introduced this riff to us during rehearsal that we all immediately thought of disco, which was very popular at the time. We worked it out and once it was ready, played it for Michael. I knew we had a hit as he bobbed his head up and down. ‘That's it, that's the gravy. Release it and it will top the charts,’ he said. So we did and it did.”
Topping the charts was just the start. It hit the number one spot in the US, Canada, Spain, and Israel, and the top ten in the UK, Switzerland, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Australia and Austria. It even hit number two on the US Billboard Hot Disco Singles Chart and the Hot Soul Singles Chart. It spent 15 weeks in the Billboard top 10 in 1980 - the longest running hit single of the year, and in 2012, was credited as the band’s top selling single with over 7 million copies sold. It won an American Music Award for Favorite Rock Single and a Grammy Nomination for best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
But the song has inspired so much more than that - it has been constantly covered and sampled, as well as appeared in TV shows, commercials and movies, and like “We Will Rock You” and “We are the Champions” it has also become a popular song for major sporting event, each time continually reintroducing the song to new generations of listeners. In its fusion of some of the biggest sounds of the era (disco and classic rock) it somehow managed to create an almost timeless sound, and establish its impressive legacy in the history of popular music.

The mention of "Crazy Little Thing..." reminded me of a time when I was working in a music shop (media not instruments) and they asked me for Elvis' Greatest Hits. I showed them all the hits collections we had, and they were aghast at the fact that "Crazy Little Thing..." wasn't on any of them. Now this wouldn't have surprised me as much had they been a young kid, but this was someone who was old enough to have seen Elvis live back in his early days. I had to bring the song up on a listening post just to prove to him that it was indeed Queen. (Google wasn't quite a thing yet.) Nevermind the fact that Elvis was long dead before the song was written. This just goes to show how adaptive Queens sound is. I mean the wrote the best Elvis song that was never recorded by Elvis.

I've banged around a lot of these channels that pull songs apart. If there is one of the that I would recommend to anyone, this is it. It goes far enough "into the weeds" for musicians to hold the interest of musicians, and yet not too far as to be accessible to the casual listener. Well played!

I loved Queen growing up - there was always a song or two of theirs that would be played at our church dances - this one, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, etc. They are so talented and my daughter and I saw Bohemian Rhapsody (we always sing that song together whenever it comes on the radio) a few years ago when it came out and just loved the movie. Each of them were magnificent in their own right but Freddie and May were extra special.

I was never a big Queen fan, never took the bait should I say. Then one day about 5 years ago I was sat in traffic with the missus on our way to work around 9am and Radio Merseyside did this thing called Stripped , I think. It was where they would take a song, strip the music off it and just air the vocal. Anyway on this occasion it was Freddie's turn - so we are sat in the car listening to this vocal and I turned to the missus and said to here 'wow, this guy can sing. I never knew'. Since that day I've become a huge Queen fan. Another great presentation by our Warren.

as an immense fan of Queen, you nailed it with saying that The Game is probably their best album in the sense that not only is it extremely diverse but also, it has quite possible THE nastiest (in a good way) grooves ever laid to tape. I'm talking about Dragon Attack. That aside, Queen was one of those unique bands who could put out an album like Hot Space, which was heavily panned back when it came out in 1982, but now is actually respected in some fashion for their willingness to try something else different and not be afraid to have a misfire. Long Live Queen and definitely Long Live Freddie!

In 1980 I saw Queen play an arena show in Detroit right when this song was high in the charts. It was also the unofficial theme song of the Detroit Lions football team that year, who for once were having a good season. I remember the crowd singing along very loudly during the refrains. Fantastic show!

The Game is *my* Queen record. I knew the band and loved a bunch of their songs but that record landed at just the right time for me. It's so sonically and musically rich and wide that it really expanded my musical palette. Thank you so much for this! Impressive! Just like the rest of your channel, wich I just discovered today and subbed. I'm 50 years old now. Back in 1986 I learned through a newspaper article that I was a huge Queen fan. How come? Wel, the article mentioned all the hits, Killer Queen, Champions, Bicycle, Crazy Little Thing, Dust, Radio GaGa...etc. I knew all those songs and loved them, yet never knew they were all from the same band! (Yes, you may hit me!) I instantly vowed to become a Queen fan and that I wanted to have everything they ever recorded. And so happened. I estimate that I've listened to Queen for about 20.000 hours until today. And since some 20 years I record cover versions together with a friend of mine. Most of the time reeeaaally old stuff. Singing was (and is) my main passion and when I was 15, all I wanted was to sing just like Freddie Mercury. Useless to say: that's bloody impossible. But it did raise the bar high for me learning how to sing! Along the way I learned to play guitar, keys/piano, bass and drums. All autodidactic by the way. My mate plays mainly guitar and also some bass. And he's a sound engineer. Back in 2006 he came up with the idea to cover this song...Another One Bites The Dust. He's more a Beatles fan but he loves the Game album and knows the Queen hits as well of course. I asked him if he'd gone mad. But we did it...well: at least we tried. Watching this video, I finally understand what we all did wrong back then and that's even apart from the fact that I couldn't possibly reproduce the insanely high chest voice Freddie has in this song. I think it's the hardest Queen song to sing of all time! I ended up singing it like Freddie used to sing it live. I love how you guys really got in detail about the instruments. It's actually pretty unbelievable that a immensely huge Queen fan for over 35 years like me has learned some brand new things and facts about AOBTD from this video, but hey: thanks a lot!! :-) I read through the comments a bit and some people mention Fun It from the Jazz album as some fore-runner to AOBTD. I must say I agree on that. Roger's drum sound is quite similar in that one and the really odd part is that he's the one who wrote it. Really love that track! I would absolutely LOVE a similar video like this one on Dragon Attack. I understand that's not really possible because it hasn't been released as a single. If I have a suggestion on another Queen song that changed music, it's quite obviuous: Bo Rhap of course! And as a real Queen fan you also must know The March Of The Black Queen, featured on the Queen II album that actually is a kind of forecast on Bo Rhap. In later years, I also got into different bands and artists like Metallica, Beatles, ELO, Supertramp, 10CC, Joe Satriani and many more, but my first and biggest love has always been Queen. Oh and may I add just one more suggestion to songs that changed music: I'm Not In Love by 10CC. An absolute milestone in recording with the backingtrack consisting of mainly hundres of voices! My mate and I were crazy enough some years ago to reproduce that one, being the first ever to make a coververson using the same recording techniques creating tape loops and creating a backingtrack with 312 voices singing 'Aaaah'. That one turned out a lot better than our AOBTD cover back in 2006! :-) WAAAAH! Oh I'm so sorry! I just looked at the suggested video's on the right side of my screen and I see now that you've already done that on I'm Not In Love! Splendid!! Thanks!! Between the tunes: Play The Game, Dragon Attack, Save Me…among others…this record had them sounding like a “raw, working band.” Stripped away were the over the top operatic sections. They’d championed that by now and were moving on. Like a successful rock band should, they were always evolving. Pushing any boundary that was in front of them. I’ll love this band until my last day…and beyond.

Jazz is still my desert island album, and i think Fun It on side 2 was a precursor to Another One Bites The Dust. AOBTD was my introduction to the band, and they became, as you said, BEYOND my favourite band. sadly, while i was raised overseas, we moved to america in late 1983 where Queen was very out of style, and everybody was all hung about Freddie being.... well, Freddie. it wasn't until Wayne's World came out when everybody was suddenly a Queen fan "again", like they never left. smh. Queen was, in my mind, like Rush; a TRUE progressive band. every album went somewhere else, and there was clear development across their careers. i came from a classical household as well, but Queen was the rock through that window pane. i was very young and had already been taking drum lessons for a while, but the moment i heard Queen, it all fell into place and i knew what i was going to do with my life. much to the chagrin of my father, lol. thanks for highlighting this "turning point" song in my life.

I consider "Fun It" (off of "Jazz") an obvious predecessor to "ABTD". It wasn't the first time Queen had dabbled in disco-ish funk-rock, though the Chic influence is also very obvious here. Great track!!

Queen played a big part in my, virtually non existent, music career The very first album I bought was Sheer Heart Attack, I can remember the entire act of buying it, even to the point that Freddie Mercury wearing black fingernail polish was the deciding factor in my purchase However it’s the opening track, Brighton Rock, which is entirely responsible for me wanting to play guitar After a few years of practice I became an entirely mediocre guitarist and switched to bass and John Deacon has always been amongst my favourite bassists ever

Wow sir. This is possibly one of the best informational queen documents with some new interesting information, instead of the same old stuff I’ve seen for so many years. Great to finally hear someone mention the difference in rogers drum sounds especially up until that point. It was also a point in time where Freddie’s voice really started to lower into the gruff thang he was go for as well as smoking about 1000 cigarettes an hour into regimen as well haha. His voice never went back towards that’s super silky sweet tone until sadly the final couple albums and I’d say that had a lot to do with cutting down on the cigs trying to prolong his life. Thanks for this amazing piece of history, really done sooo well! It takes a super deep queen fan to light up another queen dork. They are and will always will be my fav band of all time, being my first band I fell in love with as a kid too, and I light up the same way talking queen just as I do see you here! His voice wasn't actually lower, his voice just gained a lot more weight, colour, depth and power. It just sounds lower to lay person, he was actually singing higher. Freddie sang higher in the 80's then in the 70's. On Another One Bites The Dust he sings an E5 note in full chest voice. I have never seen another singer who could sing that high in full chest voice. It takes a huge amount of power to be able to do that. Later on his voice lost power when he was sick, that is why he sounded similar to his early years. Freddie is one of the few singers who had a voice that became higher as he aged.

Got this when it came out (graduated high school in 1980), also saw them in Boston on that tour. Freddie was the ultimate showman - and a LOUD show. Most of the fx sounds were likely done using a tape delay unit. We used to mess with them at the music store back then and we got these cool and crazy sounds. Then the Queen song came out and I was like: ah ha!

Tony Franklin who demos the bass is an amazing bass player, especially on fretless. He has a wonderful channel and is a lovely guy. I highly recommend Tony's former band, Blue Murder, with Carmine Appice and John Sykes from Whitesnake.

Hi Warren! Thanks for this video! Queen - it's a band that is always a pleasure to talk about in a good company, a never-ending era. I remember in my childhood in my uncle's house I watched the videocassette with all the Queen's music videos, I believe they were ripped from somewhere, over and over again. Now when I'm a father myself I understand that perhaps it was not the best videos for a child, but damn... Whole my life, I mean really whole my life I discover Queen over and over again from a new side all the time. When I listen to their music I am always amazed by the creativity of the songs, how are they different from each other, and how it sounds still fresh so I never get tired of listening to their songs! Actually, Bohemian Rhapsody - it was the only movie I watched in the cinema by going there alone by the reason and I was super happy. I know that this movie has its own fans and haters, it's not perfect but who cares, it's damn good even for one reason - it's full of the Queen's music! I produce electronic music only so people are quite often surprised when I say that I'm a huge fan of the Queen. It's not just the best band for me. Queen - is really a band that comes thru all my life and it's a big part of it actually! Excuse me for this kind of long read, but that's your video woke up my nostalgic feelings! Thanks!

I was 12; my 2nd year learning how to play drums, and this along with Gary Numan Pleasure Principle, Pete Townshend Empty Glass, and many other current British gems, was in frequent rotation and studied very closely. First time I heard this, and was told it was Queen, I cannot believe it! I have always known Queen as a hard rock band, then this? Later on it planted a seed on my brains to be an eclectic person, no genre is better than the other, as long as the music is honestly done, it doesn't matter what style it is! Thanks to Queen for planting that seed. Warren, you mentioned the album was mastered at Sterling, funny mine is mastered at Allen Zentz.

I lived in England from the summer of 78 to the summer of 79 while growing up. I had heard Queen before, but my first real introduction was when my sister got me Live Killers for either my birthday or Christmas. I wore it out and immediately dove into their back catalog. Their musical diversity was what I really loved about them. I do love The Game, but I think either Queen II or Sheer Heart Attack are by far my favorites.

Hey Warren, great video! I had a similar reaction to Queen in my youth....my sister showed me "A Night at The Opera", then later I heard the double live album, Live Killers...and I went MAD for Queen, in sort of a weekend! and started buying up all the studio albums I could find...Even joined the Queen Fan club when I was 13....HEE....I considered them sort of my own first find. Of course I was raised on Beatles, Zep, and the like. But Queen was mine! Soon after I found Rush. All big bands in my music development.....Fun to reminisce....thanks for the great content as always! Also, The Game tour was my first live concert.....my sister took me in Baton Rouge, LA 1980....EPIC show! Great memories...Thanks again....I released a song last week at my channel and someone said the ending sounds like Queen...no intention, it's in my DNA...ha..Rock on Brother!

I had just moved to the Mission District in San Francisco to go to college and recall distinctly it being played from boomboxes in the park behind my brother's apartment. When I moved to the Castro District a month or so later it came booming out of the discos along Castro Street at all hours of the day. A classic. Perhaps a special episode on the influence of disco on rock music in the 70s and 80s. For example "Miss You" by The Stones. "Shakedown Street" by The Dead, "Heart of Glass" by Blondie, etcetera.

This is the songs that pushed me over the edge from crazy about music to ok this is what I’m going to do. I learned the drum parts on the clothes basket and kitchen trash can and whatever sticks i could find. After looking at the reality of not only being able to get drum, theirs no way my folks around the haus was having it so it was the guitar my mom got me, word!!!! After realizing how many guitarists was around I got into the bass and never stop playing whatever I get my hands on! Thanks for this one.
