The first time I heard this song as a child that summer of 1983, that guitar riff streamed out of every open window in every house. The metronomic guitar riff sounded so natural and familiar, almost inevitable, as if it just descended out of the ether one balmy July afternoon and had always been playing, just waiting for the world to hear it.

Then I started playing and realized where the magic was, and I've been a The Police fan ever since. My first exposure to The Police was after an Elvis Costello concert at the Roxy Theater in San Diego. After getting The King's autograph, I walked to my car and found a bumper sticker stuck under the windshield. "Support The Police" it said with headshots of these three punky-looking guys. A short time later, I spotted Outlandos d'Amour at Tower Records, so I bought it. I've been a fan ever since. The kicker to the story is sometime later, leaving the Skelton Club (a punk club in San Diego), I forgot to turn on my headlights. I got pulled over. I figure that bumper sticker got me out of a traffic ticket. I bet the cop, at that time, had no idea who The Police were. As always, great video. I loved the demo on Andy Summers' guitar lick.

One thing you missed that to me is crucial about this album is that at the time Sting was experimenting with alternate frequencies for A. Like the old classical composers had done. With this album several of the tunes were recorded in standard tuning but not to A 440 but to alternate frequencies like A 432hz... which is what "Every Breath You Take" was recorded at. It bugged me for years until i started learning alternate A tunings and experimenting with them. Now sometimes, this phenomena can be done by adjusting the tape speed during mastering (like I believe was done on "New York Minute" by Don Henley), but in this case I read that Sting had been experimenting with these tunings and had settled on using them for this album... probably another reason he and Summers almost took each other out! ;)

Sorry to be "that guy." The progression is Aadd9 / F#m9 / Dsus2 / Esus2. One could also refer to the last two chords as sus9 chords (the 9th is the octave the 2nd, or a "compound" interval). The graphics refer to these chords as Dmaj9 and Emaj9, but technically those terms are reserved for chord extensions that include the chord pitch classes 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 of the scale related to the chord in question. So a Dmaj9 would be the chord D-F#-A-C#-E. The chord as illustrated is comprised of the pitches D-E-A, or a D triad with no third, and with the second note of the D scale (E) inserted in the place where one usually finds the third. Of course, the riff has melodic movement on the D and E chords, but they avoid the modality of the third. Again, apologies...my inner Theory professor rears its head regularly. Love your channel. It helped me navigate the waters toward converting my studio to mix in Atmos, for which I am grateful. 🙂

I really liked the exchange in this vid with Hugh Padgham. It reminds me on , when I decided to sit on the other side of the window. All people came for a time together and they have all the same aim. Do a good work and release it to the world. Somebody told me, about a rec session he had. The singer had the feeling that he stands above a city in the night and sings out his song to the people. The engineer put him on a chair standing and lays down a Christmas lighting chain thingie on the floor. It is not the technical job only, the pros in recording have to be empathetic, psychologists. But that's make the engineers job so unique, isn't it ?

Indeed! Such a classic chord progression!
@arothmanmusic3 жыл бұрын
Yep. That progression is underneath tons and tons of pop songs, which is what makes it even more incredible that they turned it into such an iconic hit. If you can take something everybody’s heard a million times before and make it seem fresh and innovative, you’ve really accomplished something.

I count the Police and Sting 🤘😎🤘 a.k.a. Gordon Sumner 🎶🤓🎵😂 as some of the greatest influences of modern rock... And Warren Huart, of course!!! 🤘😎🤘 Hope you're all doing marvelously well!!! Cheers Warren!

Truly a song that changed music. As a citizen of Las Vegas, I find it funny, just how many people choose this song for their wedding reception. I really can't believe that I'm STILL explaining to these people that this song is SINISTER! and it is NOT a love song! LOL!

Haha I hear you! It’s pretty sinister indeed

Excellent choice as always. I remember first hearing this on TV as a little kid (around the time it came out) but even then, I "got" the sinister undertone implied by the lyrics and it still amazes me people thought this was a love song!

Your song selection for this Songs That Changed Music series is beyond excellent. This is one of my favorite songs, like so many you've profiled. I love learning the inside details about how the whole process went down. The musicality of this particular song certainly has a way of eliciting significant memories for me and I'm sure for others as well. Thanks for another great video.

I still have the 7 inch single of this, bought the day it was released. Great song, but like many I struggle to play it as Andy does. Even Phil Collen says he would never attempt it on stage. That said Every Little Thing is IMO the best Police song, and I do play that on stage, and almost daily at home. Indeed that one song led me to learn to play guitar. Loved your interviews with Hugh P. but you never asked him about his work on Sweet FA.
