Even if you interpret "Night Prowler" as being a song about a stalker, who said an artist can never write from the perspective of the villain? As another commenter already mentioned, in "Dirty Deeds" Bon writes from the perspective of a contract killer and everyone loves that song. 'Fulsom Prison Blues' by Johnny Cash is also seen from the point of view of a cold-blooded murderer. There are countless other examples. I reckon there is a part in most people that lowkey wanders what makes evil people tick, and that is a legitimate thing for any artist to explore. Jim Sterling did a great video of this nature called "To Play The Villain" and explained it better than I could. It's a great video worth checking out.

"Night Prowler" is not about a stalker/serial killer/rapist. AC/DC stated that it's actually about a boy sneaking into his girlfriend's bedroom. Sure, there was that case where a killer/stalker did take inspiration from this song, but it was never the band's intention to encourage anything more than a naughty boy sneaking into his girlfriend's room for a good time.

@@kevadelic I guess not. I always thought it was, but then the band clarified what they meant. It was the killer who took inspiration from it who gave it that connotation, but I guess other people would too. This is reminding me of what Dee Snider said at the PMRC Hearings that were responsible for the parental labels. He said something to the the degree of that people put their own interpretations into songs based on personal experiences, and this killer found murder and rape in "Night Prowler."

The legendary artists made legendary albums. One good song is nice but just doesn't compare. Think of all the albums where one great song rolls into another: Dark Side of the Moon, The Joshua Tree, anything by Led Zeppelin. The modern attitude is that making money is the only reason for making music. There was a lot of pretentiousness that was irritating but I prefer that to the empty commercialism we see now.

A music artist spends a lot of time and effort into creating an album, Ash. Sometimes this creative time sends the artist mad, or breaks up the band, or, if you're Dave Gahan, of Depeche Mode, gives you the idea that being 'Heroin Christ' is a good one, and which damn near kills you. The very least you can do, is to listen to every beat, note, chord, and sample of that album from start to finish. That's why they are made, and why the tracks are sequenced the way they are.

She said THE ARTIST not THE ALBUM. Like here's all of Pink Floyd's albums on shuffle so you hear different songs individually and in a random order. I don't understand why no one here in the comments gets that. If an album is meant to be listened to all at once all the time then why are singles released? Or maybe she's just not in the mood to hear a deep political album and just wants to listen to the band itself. There's nothing wrong with shuffling a bands songs on a playlist. That's pretty much the point of a playlist.

I was thinking the same. I hate that people can purchase single tracks from an album. Album's are meant to be taken in as a whole. When I was a kid you saved your allowance or odd jobs money, bought an album, and listened to it front-to-back, all while reading the liner notes and studying the cover. If there was a song you didn't much care for, you gave it more than just that first chance. You eventually enjoyed it for its placement and band's effort in making it. You didn't get up and move the needle. Plus, you spent YOUR money on it so it wasn't as easily dismissible. [my $.02]

Ash I love you so much but, that's a terrible way to listen to an artist, it's ok to make playlists, shuffle albums sometimes and skip a song and stuff, but not to listen to the album in it's entirety ever ,the way it originally lays? It robs the artist of their original intent and vision for a project, a lot of work goes into constructing an albums flow and feeling, lots of albums i.e. Dark Side of the Moon (obviously) and Aqualung but also less well known albums like Phantom Planet's The Guest and the masterpiece that is Josh Ritter's So Runs The World Away are painstakingly constructed to elicit certain emotion or imagery. Albums are NOT just a collection of singles, although ppl today seem to see them as such. I am a musician and I can tell you my band spends a lot of time and effort just creating a vibe in our set lists, let alone in the studio on an album.... Just my probably unpopular opinion.... 2 thoughts on the AC/DC bit. 1: either way you toss it, none of their albums are as good as powerage. Just facts. 2: i find it distressing that you guys went full tipper gore on nightprowler. The second verse is about sneaking in your girlfriends room while her parents are asleep, consentually of course. Malcolm confirmed that. As for the first verse.... you’re telling me a song about a creeper prowling the streets is bad, but a song about contract killers(dirty deeds) is perfectly fine? Also, please don’t blame AC/DC for Richard Ramirez. Like I said, that’s Tipper Gore levels of moral panic

The Waiting Room on The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway gets my vote. Re: The Beatles (White Album), if I was skipping only one song it wouldn't be Wild Honey Pie. That one's over in a flash. Revolution 9 is an extended crap session. At least The Waiting Room eventually morphs into semi-music.

The Waiting Room is... weird. It might work better if it was a little shorter. The instrumentals on Lamb were basically only there so Peter Gabriel could slip out of one costume and into the other in their stage show. Hairless Heart is pretty, but Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats and Ravine don't do much for me either.

Agreed. I don't mind Wild Honey Pie at all, but Revolution No. 9 goes on way too long. In the end, the white album is such a mish mash, skippable tracks are expected, in my opinion.

"Wild Honey Pie" is only filler it’s much too short to even be a song just like "Why Don’t Do It InThe Road". Take off ""Revolution"#9" and replace it with George's "Not Guilty" and improves the White Album immensely IMHO.

"Escape" by Metallica is a nice song. You joke about it sounding like "teenage angst", but James was baaarely out of his teens by then. He was twenty when it was released, so he may very well have been a teenager when he wrote it. Regardless, the song really spoke to me when I was fifteen or so. "Me against the world," I related to that. That's powerful, it's nothing to he ashamed of on James' part or anyone else's part.

It's not so much about the theme or lyrics of "Escape", but the songwriting. It's not a bad song per se, but it doesn't fit in with the rest of TRL's songs - no wonder as it was essentially a made-to-order radio hit song. The basic pop song structure, the chorus' vocal melody exactly following the guitar melody, and the chorus being in a major key simply are a rather jarring contrast with the rest of the album.

Leave it to Ash to 1.totally cop out on the topic and 2.actually advocate for what's been wrong with the more passive so-called "fans" from Napster to the iPad. Each song isn't a universe unto itself. Some hardly make sense outside of their album placement but are brilliant within it. Once albums stopped being "singles plus filler", they became constructive works unto themselves. Or you can tell Brian Wilson that Pet Sounds has a few nice tunes, but that's it.

I honestly think that the song “he doesn’t know I’m alive” by Janet Jackson fits into this category. I almost equate it in the context of the control album to a damaged puzzle piece that while it may still fit somewhat with a narrative of a girl who is discovering herself and maturing into a young woman but still hasn’t quite figured it all out yet in the love department, it takes a little super glue or tape for it to really stick in your mind as a declarative statement beyond a surface level slice of puppy love. It was almost sort a step backward to the previous dream street era of a couple years prior which she was just given songs to sing without much emotional or lyrical input into its creation. It’s a song on that album that is pleasant to listen to as a slice of cute mid 80’s dance pop fluff but one that when put under close scrutiny of the album as a while if you were decide to skip over you wouldn’t really miss it.

For me, it’s 100% “Seamus” off of the great Pink Floyd album “Meddle”. The rest are a pure joy, but Seamus always makes me wince. I like the bluesy element it has but the howling and the singing are just rubbish. Like, One of these Day is brilliant, A Pillow of Winds is so relaxing, Fearless is brilliant for a number of reasons, San Tropez is also incredibly relaxing and makes me feel like I’m at the beach during the summer, and Echoes is a god damn masterpiece, but Seamus, I’m ngl, is a steaming hot pile of garbage. Given they’re my 2nd favourite band, I don’t say that lightly

"Escape" was an anthem for my angsty teenage years, as was the rest of the album. I do agree that it was 4 great albums, one good album, but I lost all respect after the Napster fiasco. People who were downloading their stuff from Napster fell in to two categories, people who owned EVERYTHING they released and were looking for anything else, and people who wouldn't have bought one of their albums in the first place. Four Sticks on Led Zeppelin IV (Zoso) Look at the rest of the songs: you've got rock (Black Dog, Rock and Roll), hard rock (Misty Mountain Hop), the Delta Blues-inspired stuff that Led Zep {Jimmy Page} always loved (When the Levee Breaks), folk (Going to California, The Battle of Evermore), and a mixture of the above plus prog rock (Stairway to Heaven), and then you've got Indian inspired raga genre on Four Sticks. WAY out of place on Zoso. If they'd held onto it for a couple of years, it would have fitted damn near perfectly onto the more diverse genres they put on House of the Holy.

People up in here hating on Ash (criticizing, I know the difference) for not listening to full albums. Well I'm with you Ash! The only time I listen to a full album is if I'm explicitly looking for new music to listen to. Most of the time I don't sit down to listen to music, so I don't have time to get in a whole hour long album (or longer, looking at you Tool). To be fair, I am a very critical person, so chances are out the 10-15 songs on an album, I'll like maybe 5, and over time a few more will grow on me. If I would just be skipping through half the album anyways, it isn't worth it. Like I'm willing to give any song a chance, but I'm not going to listen over and over again if it just doesn't vibe with me. I'm a bit more selective with my music.

@@thegeorgiacreekwalker491 it's not that it's a bad song in general. It's just clearly the worst one on the album by a vast margin.

Escape is a great heavy song. It's just not a good Metallica song

I realize that the lyrics to “Escape” might not be that good, but I always rocked out to it. The guitars and drums make up for it.

FYI... I'm sorry but just shuffling music means you loose all feel for an album... Shuffling a list of favorite songs is fine but that's not how to listen to ground breaking albums!

"Daddy" on Korn's debut. I KNOW it's an emotional and brutal, groundbreaking song about child abuse and is very raw and sad. I just can't listen to it again. Too much. The rest of that album is great and Korn's early stuff is killer. That song is just too real for me. FFS, if you ever even SUSPECT abuse is happening to a child you know, call the authorities. I don't care how hard it is to believe. No one deserves to be harmed that profoundly.
