It’s called sample because they paid to use it, otherwise it’s called plagiarism since it’s illegal. But some of these artists just copy and pasted and called it theirs

Ive noticed a ton of really popular songs just rip the melody straight off of japanese city pop and no one knows or cares bc most people dont know the originals. Crystal dolphin was particularly egregious

Most people know, I mean city pop was pretty popular in the 2016-18 era so most of the people who listen to these artists know where they got it from. And plus the samples are all over tik tok.

I would like to add one of my own. It's called 尋愛 (Xin Ai) by one of my favorite cantopop artists called Anita Mui, and it samples Plastic Love by Mariya Takeuchi! Love Japanese city pop!

Sampling is such a weird topic because there are some cases like future funk where it's essentially a remix mashup with a bunch of other songs which is cool and then we get stuff like Crystal Dolphin which just rips off the song. I think Tyler the Creator also is very borderline as well though not nearly to the same degree. Tldr if you're gonna sample a song actually change it up instead of just essentially putting a filter over it. Otherwise it's like a remix that doesn't credit the original.
