I've been listening to Sabrina's music since I was 12 and she was 15, which is around the time this song came out. It's easy to dismiss the messages in her older music as "basic" or "nonsensical" and compare them to musicians who are her age now (so in their 20s), but when I was a kid, this was GROUNDBREAKING to me. It's kinda the same issue with the Barbie movie speech and message. FOR YOU, who are in your 20s or 30s, it's not new information, but the 12 year olds who never questioned anything and their moms who are not on the internet 24/7 participating in sociopolitical discourse are starting to question things because of it. This song, along with all of her Eyes Wide Open (her first album) songs were the philosophy I lived by, back then. So of course, now that I'm 20 it's just a fun little song, but it's not bad or stupid and I'm glad you recognized that ❤

So for Sabrina she was really young and it was kind of her departure from the girl meets world persona and all as I’m pretty sure the subway is the same as the one in the show Ppl find the lyrics stupid because of the family tree moment but yak it is what it is Also just wanted to point out at the end of the song when she’s sitting down and not singing you can see her twiddling her thumbs which is amazing in my opinion (I saw a comment say the eye symbol is probably for ‘eyes wide open’ which was her previous album to this)

I was at her opening concert on her second tour, The De-Tour, in Vancouver, and got to meet her, talk to her for a few minutes, take a picture and get a little video with the two of us. It was amazing and she was super sweet. Right away I could tell that she wasn't only talented, but that she deserved to be a big star. She is quite short, but her personality and kindness were humongous. I actually took some extremely amazing videos of nearly the entire concert, as I was right at the foot of center stage, (and it was a much smaller, more intimate theater, so I was able to capture her amazingly.) If you ever want to check her out live, (outside of an awards performance or TV taping,) I have all those videos uploaded on my channel. If you want to do a reaction to any of them, just let me know. I personally love this song! It's one of my favorites! So musically interesting, and the lyrics are awesome too! I'm 32, so with that being said I grew up in more of the Hilary Duff era of Disney, but I have a Zoomer niece who loved and still loves Sabrina and watched her on Girl Meets World, and what not. How I’ve always understood the “twirling them thumbs” lyric and which it could help others that don’t understand or even hate it cause they see it as a random lyric song is like you said it’s about a corrupted system and the situations she is describing in the lyrics are fucked up situations that happen everyday, so the “twirling them thumbs” meaning is about a higher up position/person or like cops or government sees all these fucked up situations but instead of getting up and doing something about it they sit back in their chair, cross their hands and twirl their thumbs and watch it all happen and basically watching everyone suffer, i think the ones that are haters aren’t fully understanding the lyrics of the song. The band system of the down had a song that said in the lyrics to not get distracted by the upbeat of the song but focus on the meaning of the lyrics, Sabrina was awake for sure

I believe the episode she was in aired in 2018 and so I'm assuming it's a 2017 song as that's when they probably filmed the episode that she was in.
