Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum; the method is similar to the maki-e technique. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

I wasn’t sure on the last 3 tracks at first, but I’m glad she ended it fun and upbeat. It’s such a heavy album it needed some levity. Loved your reaction, I think we can all relate to needing a break/snacks for our mental health halfway through. It’s such a beautiful piece of art, I’m proud of Lana for putting this out into the world. Her best stuff ever IMO

So in fishtail and peppers: braiding of the hair is used as a metaphor for something intimate and as well as you know mess up the hair (saying a lot by saying too little). It also works literally if you wanna take it at face value but yeah it exists like that. It’s deeper!

I think the interlude has multiple meanings; I don't think she would have included it on such a personal album if it didn't. A) Most of the album is about death, and I think that can result in a deeper examination of religion, which has led to her becoming more interested in going to church. I think she had conflicting feelings about it, though. In "A&W", she says, "God's a charlatan," but yet she references the idea of God throughout the album, like in "Grandfather..." in a positive way, so I think she's trying to reckon with some of the bigger ideas about meaning. B) The sermon seems to be mostly about lust and trying to want what you have, especially with your family. Interestingly it comes right after A&W, which I think is a real juxtaposition. It's like the church is a context for where she gets the ideas of what being a "whore" entails. She feels like she's being shamed for being the way she is, but also, at the same time, the men that she's involved with are the ones that don't want what they have with their families. In "Sweet", you can really see that she WANTS to have the type of life that Judah is describing, but the men around her don't see her in that capacity, so she's tired of trying to find love anymore and discards that idea in favour of something that men do want to be involved in C) At the end of the segment of Judah's sermon, he admits that his sermons are not about the congregants; they're about him. I think Lana connects to that idea because she's said her music is really for her, not her fans. She just puts out what she wants to put out. At the same time, I also think leaving the sermon on that note kind of positions him as being self-focused. Does it imply that maybe he's the charlatan? Is it a criticism of how the authority that holds up ideas of what Lana might aspire to and also be shamed by is fundamentally flawed himself? I think she knows this will be controversial, but then again, a few statements on the album are controversial. I also think she just thought it tied in so well with the themes of the album and ideas that were on her mind that it made sense to include the clip as an interlude within the work.

I agree. While i was shocked by the judah interlude at first, it does connect with some of the themes you mentioned in the album i.e., death, religion, god, lust, shame, self-serving points of view, suicide, feeling lost, etc.. For me the album has a "somewhere down-in-Texas" energy. Which is different because Lana usually tells all her stories from in the hollywood hills of Los Angeles....but this album feels more like an experience in the 'bible belt' ....its pretty, its country, its nostalgic, its fear the lord, its the whore at church, it the hook ups, its being careless, and its the family memories and being silly It comes across like a full story about a southern woman...almost like an Anna nicole smith type character... still goes to church and believes in god, holds family close.....but she has low self-worth, is feeling lost, and had many disappointing experiences with finding true love. The whole album has this yearning for a more simple life ..with less responsibility...and purpose.

What a great and emotional reaction! The first part of the album destroyed me emotionally too. The Grants was very moving, i was trying to hold tears on Kintsugi and Fingertips made me cry. The lyrics are heavy and powerful and it took time to process them AW was a banger, Sweet was like a Disney OST I like the allegory with the tunnel. In the first part of the album she walks in and starts to feel afraid of being forgotten and not finding the way out. In the 2nd part she is in the middle of the tunnel in the dark and this is the moment she reflects on death, loss and her life in general. In the 3rd part of the album she finds the exit, letting depression and fears go, then she sees the light and realizes there are people and things who/which are worth living for

I think Kintsugi is less about silver linings and more about how coping with heartbreak allows you to appreciate life more through experience and maturity (esp since Kintsugi is all about seeing the beauty in “imperfection”). Once you are in the dark you are much more aware of the light. Love your reaction/analyses

Since the necklace is on the neck ( a vulnerable space ) and a candy necklace can be seen as something submissive people can wear, Lana could be referring to choking as an act while making out, which also clarifies the “you’ve been acting reckless” lyric

Judah Smith Interlude ties the themes Lana contemplated in Sweet and A&W. That interlude is the prayer to God, in which Judah begs Him to make him a man of love and not a man of lust. In Sweet and A&W, Lana was in a relationship with a man in lust. And in this interlude, she listens to that pastor and it apparently amazes her that there is still someone among men who wants to become a man in love and who “thinks about heaven/God” - The Grants. At certain point, she even makes fun of his words and laughs at his exaggerated emotions. I think that the point of this interlude is to show how Lana found precious thoughts in someone crazy and religious, but not in those men she loved before.
