personally Luigi's mansion has always been my favorite because of its reliance on blues influences taking it to more of the ragtime jazz route. I'm a big fan of rag in minor keys because rhythmically rag is almost inherently uplifting but put it into a minor key and your brain second guess and things become ambiguous and that effect is awesome. this is what I sense in Luigi's Mansion. just found your channel and I absolutely love it. will definitely be waiting and looking for more!!

From a sound design perspective, our ears are used to hearing things in a certain register. With music, you can make a song very interesting to listen to by having something like call-and-response between trombones and flutes, because our ears have to readjust to the new register. The ghost house music in the first mario has the melody in the mids and doubled in the bass. Our ears will focus on that, and eventually the repetitive high notes will "fade into the background." They remain unsettling, but not in the forefront of your mind. Kind of like how Boos like to sneak up behind you. The combination of high pitches and bass with no mids inbetween can also be unsettling, since sounds like that do not occur in nature.

The one from 3D World is my favorite too!! I had a perspective on the last 8 bars that is different from yours (9:48), and you're right it's a bit ambiguous but I figured I'd share anyway: To me, it doesn't really feel like the key of B. It feels more like C#m while borrowing a lot from C# dorian (which yes I know is B but it's important to make the distinction in this case). If thinking about it this way, the D#m7 - G#7(b9) - C#m is actually a 2-5-1 and that A#diminished thing feels like a substitution (of F#) to emphasize a borrowed chord from C# dorian. Come to think of it, the D#m7 is also from the dorian mode, so it's just going between them effortlessly basically (think similar to the Sm4sh opening theme). And now, the A chord doesn't seem weird at all, because it's in the C#m scale. But for me the biggest reason why it feels like C#m to me is because all of this leads to me thinking that deceptive G#sus4 wants to go to a regular G# and treat that as a V and then play the entire song in C#m from the very beginning instead of G#m!!!!! Hahahaha. But it doesn't do that!!! Ugh so unsatisfying. It's a viiideoooo gamee piece and therefore has to loop so that's why I think he did that in this case. If I were Mr. Minegishi or whoever wrote this piece, I would've just taken everything after once it switches to Em and transpose it to Bm. Cause why not? G#m -> Em is already weird enough, why not make it G#m -> Bm (actually that's probably less weird). Then, do all the music-math and that sus4 chord at the end becomes a D#sus4 that can then much easier take us back to G#m which is the beginning of the piece! Then I do that myself and I'm like....eh, it's better the way they wrote it haha. And I do all of this thinking for nothing. But that's what they get for completely fooling my ear... I'm surprised you remembered the Hyrule example and it being the same composer across games! Great connection

Love your videos, found them recently, they're super well made. Wouldn't an analysis of the last 8 bars of the 3D world theme work better if we see the section in the key of C# minor as opposed to B minor? Beginning with a ii-V-i, the last sus 4 makes more sense as the V of C# sneakily becoming the original tonic again (the lack of resolution to G# Maj from the G# sus4 signalling the end of C# as a tonic key).

I could argue at 9:45. I think in bar 9-10 we are actually modulating to C# minor (in bar 10 you can clearly hear G# A# B# in the bass line, also I'd say the first note displayed in bar 10 is a B# instead of a C natural), so actually we have in bars 9-10-11 the chords of II V I (subdominant-dominant-tonic functionally, so very perfect xD). Then the C# chord at bar 11 is regarded as a common chord to the key of B (hence becomes a II, subdominant. Also notice the B natural in bass) and we have II VII (subdominant-dominant) in bars 11-12, which yelds to a B major modulation (though not resolving), as you stated.

I've never noticed sus4 chords resolving to their parallel minor chords being such a rarity. I use that device pretty frequently. That was how sus4 and sus2 chords were presented to me 23 years ago, the idea that 2nds and 4ths are major/minor neutral so they could be used to embellish both.

the last piece reminds me of the music in the professor layton games (which i absolutely adore), idk if you've ever played them but the music in them is GREAT and i'd love to see your take on them

Fun fact, the church never baned the tritone for being the devil in music. That phrase came about because that was a hard interval to sing. And in the same way we would say something is a bitch to play now, they said it was the devil.

Super Mario World castle theme is my favorite. It's so ominous and dark.
