That phenomenon of lyric editing messing with the original idea is sooo frustrating. I find that the best way to get out of that is to just improvise a few lyrics and play with what comes out, and when you run dry, keep playing through the song on your instrument and just improved lines until you have something you like
@Cee_B Жыл бұрын
Pick an experience that relates to the topic but don’t go into detail. Keep it ambiguous or short like skimming a story. That way it still relates, it’s a true experience, and it gives you a bigger table of words and syllables to rhyme or play with. Also stay ambiguous with topic/theme. Add experience or made up story to that theme/topic that made you feel the way the topic makes you feel. Example: a theme would be “Love” talk brief or tell a short summed up story of an experience that made you feel “Love” I got this way with rap. It’s harder to write a rap song on topic than say a R&B song bc there’s more words in shorter amount of time. Hope that helps!

Ideally I think it's best to try and write something that means something. But a hell of a lot of songs don't seem to mean much. My favourite songwriter has always been John Lennon. He wrote a lot of meaningful songs but a lot of my favourites of his he admitted himself didn't mean anything. It doesn't make any difference to me, a song like Rain or Hey Bulldog meant nothing but I can still listen to them all day. Even a pointless story if told brilliantly with great melodies, rhythm, instrumentation can be a great song.

The whole point of writing a song is that you have something to say.
@MalkuthEmperor Жыл бұрын
I fundamentally disagree with this first line of rhetoric. Answer me this :How will anyone learn to write songs, unless they try writing 100's of songs?- most of which will probably not be vary good, but then some of them will be good, and others will have parts that you'll like, and trough trial and error you will discover what you want to say, and what you "thought' all along. I mean, this whole approach of " uu, lets wait for inspiration, is just nonsense, because what if you only get inspired every 3 months? Then it'll take you 5 years to write a full album, I mean its ridiculous to even constrain yourself in such a way for an artist of any caliber, whether its a beginner of an advanced or whatever. And this is not to say " don't try different approaches", because sure, sometimes it'll work better if we wait till we have something to say, however, this cant be our main way of operating because not only will we not learn in the time we spend waiting, but also, we wont have the enjoyment of constantly exploring and discovering things that we otherwise wouldn't unless we pick up our instrument and a pen and paper ( or phone notepad, whatever feels better, or both)
@MalkuthEmperor Жыл бұрын
what's more. Writers block happens when we expect perfection from the first try, or before we even began, and then because we are expecting something, but are afraid of not reaching that expectation, then we get the so called "writers block" which can be easily overcome if you "just try no matter the result". And when we do this, we will discover that a lot of times, the ideas just needed a chance to be expressed, and before we try, we wont know what they are.
@MalkuthEmperor Жыл бұрын
lastly. There does not have to be depth or a good reason to write a song, and the great songs, don't always start with a great idea, but instead just by experimentation, trial and error.. you get the point already so ill stop writing XD

What about Beatles Yesterday which started with Paul McCartney obtaining a melody from a dream. At first he didn't know what the lyrics and the meaning of the song should be and just tried out nonsensical lyrics to begin with I.e. Scrambled Eggs. Then when he worked through the song structure started to get a better feel as what the lyrics should be. Telling someone that a song has to have something to say from the very beginning makes it more difficult for anyone to write songs I believe
