There is a trial mode after you beat the game, with B being collecting 50 rings (which was infuriating in Metropolis Zone, I had to inch my way there, and I used SO MANY save states), and A is a time attack. For example, EHZ has 2:00, CPZ has 2:30, etc.

check out sonic 2 for the 3ds, they added modes and stage select, you can immediately go to the last stage in ring mode so you can beat it easily and unlock super sonic mode with no effort.
